News & Events Gun Control is NOT WORKING

Yeah, this has nothing to do with population, immigration, the lack of an alternative, criminal on criminal crime, or teen suicide.

So we should add guns to the mix?

Murders involving cars triple every decade.(ban them!)
Same as phones and murders or phones and drug deals or other criminal acts but phones are used by everyone for everyday uses as are cars. Guns are specific machines designed to kill.

EVERY DAILY NEWS REPORT NOWADAYS IS ON GUN CRIME BY CRIMINALS, OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE

"SHEEPLE" generally goes better with your line of argument.

Anti-gun logic:

'Nobody needs a gun for self defence!!! You've got the police to protect you.... w-with their guns.'

In what part of Australia do criminals not have guns?

Dunno, but I think the likelihood of your average Australian, who isn't involved in crime, having a gun randomly pulled on them is very, very small.

Personally, I wouldn't feel safer knowing my neighbours had guns - quite the opposite.

Well you haven't made any suggestion that more people having guns would address either of those points.

I would suggest everyone having guns would lead to more suicides and accidental deaths it would prevent via self defense- especially since the homicide rate in Australia is around 1.5 deaths per 100,000 people. And I really don't agree you need guns to prevent property crime, I'm not going to shoot somebody over my TV and I don't think anybody else should either.

Gun controls enacted 1997- down goes the suicide rate:
http://www.mindframe-media.info/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/7961/Suicide-Figures.pdf
"Suicide rates for males peaked in 1997 at 23.6 per 100,000 but have steadily decreased since then and stood at 14.9 per 100 000 in 2009."

Gun death rate: 2.82 per 100,000 in 1996...1.06 in 2010.

You would be hard pressed to convince me that reintroducing widespread handguns etc would do anything good.

And you owning a gun affects underworld crime?

To the extent of making myself, my loved ones and my property a harder target, yes.
Well you haven't made any suggestion that more people having guns would address either of those points.
No, I haven't.

We also have half the number of homicides total and a half/a third the number of gun homicides. So your anecdotes don't bear out the facts.

Anecdotes? I've been pointing out flaws in logic.

stralia conflicts me. On one hand, right-wing loony. On the other, Bobby Hill avatar. Surely this would be more appropriate...

Notice how America is the only one brought up as an example.

Despite having 320 million people, and having diversities in society that our country may never comprehend, let alone endure.

What about Switzerland? How come no one ever says Switzerland? Or Finland?

Because it doesn't pander to the scare mentality - the same mentality everyone's brainwashed by despite contradictions on the news.

Australia is a violent colonial nation, like the United States. We would be heavily prone to mass shooting with a proliferation of guns. Shit, if I could get a pistol I'd probably take it out clubbing and leave it in my glove box just in case.

History proves Australia had issues with mass shootings in the past. Why go back to something that didn't work?

But sure, if you want to hand our nation of violent drunks a bunch of semi auto weapons, don't be surprised when every night at the RSL becomes the OK Corral.

Are you one of dem libertarians?

There's a few of them around in Australia thesedays, its a bit worrying. People who are generally smarter than the average joe, but not academically educated or particularly brilliant. That's my summation of them at least.

Also they usually aren't married and feel like as single blokes they should be paying less tax as they don't use the vast majority of services. I can kind of see where they're coming from in that respect. But libertarianism has no history or roots in Australia for good reason, we actually began as a libertarian paradise (i.e. slavery, serving our euro masters, jailed for going home early from work etc) and the reason our unions are some of the strongest in the world is a direct response to 'libertarian' thinking.

To summarise: they're pretty smart (albeit selfish) guys with no sense of history

Hate going to the gym but still want to beat people up/scare them, buy gun.

Libertarians always come across like stroppy teenagers screaming "You can't tell me what to do".

I do like concepts of libertarianism without embracing the philosophy as a whole. Definitely lean towards political philosophies that are individualistic as opposed to collectivistic.

Noice ad hom... Although I do find it hard to disagree with Dale's views on the floral industrial complex and their vice grip on Valentines Day.
