That would have been a hell of a drive Dugrene

In my early 20's (a couple decades ago - 80's) I moved to Melb for a new job and did the drive solo Perth to Melbourne on Fri-Sunday in 26.5 hrs driving time. Got away late morning on Friday and had a sleeping stop first night at Border Village motel (SA side of Eucla), but was flipping dangerous (and flipping stupid) driving through most the second night going through east SA and Vic. Road's a lot better now. It's a hell of a long way, nearly 3,500km I think. The speeding fines cost quite a bit more than the fuel did :( - cops much worse/more prolific on Vic side.

Have also done it with a couple of other drivers and with 3 non-stop is easy with 1 rsleeping on back seat.

If I did that drive solo again would suggest the same for first day but then stop maybe Bordertown on the SA/Vic border for next night and you'd still get into Melb by midday. Or take an extra day and checkout some of the sights (eg. Eucla cliffs/caves as well as Spencer Gulf).

Left Perth about 5pm Tuesday crossed the Nullabor and at Ceduna sometime Wednesday arvo slept somewhere for a couple of hours. went through Adelaide about midnight wednesday and arrived where she lived directly across from Kensington train station about 7.30 Thursday.

I was a long time ago and didn't think anything of it at the time. Mind you I lived in the Pannawonica or Wickham and would drive overnight to perth often. From Panna in 13 hours from Wickham 15.5. Had a steel roo bar and used to sit on about 125k.
Being a train driver I was conditioned i guess.

Flights and accommodation already booked. Can't beat Tiger and Armadale Apartments in Prahran for a low cost trip to the east.

Its amazing the distances people living in distant rural areas (rural is an understatement imo) get accustomed to driving in WA - we must have the most remote and widespread locations on the planet - be nice to get more of that gst and mining royalty money into the roads.

Well I've bitten the bullet and booked flights for the weekend of the "Big Dance"

I figured it's worth booking a ticket now and went with a refundable Airfare so if it all falls in a heap I can get my Money back minus $60 admin fee. Cost just over $1k return but being refundable I think not too bad seeing I've left it fairly late.

$60 is a small price of "insurance" to guarantee I'll have a way to get there, and certainly will be cheaper than trying to book a ticket in the last week (if by any chance we do make it)

Priscilla Queen of the Desert style?
Tried to get them to paint to purple but they said only if you buy it
By the way Thrifty don't let their vehicles out of the state but Hertz do , cost $833 per week for 1000Km then 27cents per Km .7000 km trip means $2453.00 plus fuel and meals. 7 people = $350 a head + fuel

Or maybe the speedo cable falls out 800kms into the trip and you are lucky enough to save yourself a few $$$$ ;-)

Good for you Bundy. I live in Sydney but did the same thing too. You just never know, and we will be the ones laughing if (and a big if) we make it and people are scrounging for $2K 1 way charter flights :)
And if you book a hotel on bookings.com.au you don't have to pay until you check out and free to cancel up to 48 hours before :)

When where you in Panna I was there 12 years 1974 till 1986

If anyone is chasing a ride over I am driving. Have already bought the corporate package and am meeting some mates over there who are flying in from europe.

Being a big guy I prefer the comfort of travelling by car. And it works out the same cost roughly anyway. Half price if you split fuel between 2!

PM me if you are interested. The itinerary is
Tuesday perth to kal 5 hours
wed kal to ceduna 14 hours
thurs ceduna to horsham 12 hours
fri horsham to melb 3 hours.

I want to go to the GF parade on the friday hence the short stint from horsham to melb.

Coming home I will be leaving on the tuesday am and getting back friday night.

Going to be a little harder now that Bwendon Gwylls has unilaterally decided to hand back over half a billion dollars in R4R money this year to help our city cousins build their monuments.

'Motel Seppo' has it's first confirmed guest for Friday and Saturday (providing we make it to the GF). :thumbsu:

Happy to take 1 more if you your happy to bunk on a single fold out bed. Got the all clear from the girlfriend!

Think I'm going to take Friday off work to attend the GF parade, have plenty of Annual Leave to burn...

Just ran it by my principal - who himself is a one eyed Freo man - but I don't have any Long Service Leave available to me, and I can't get short leave that close to school hols... His response, "sorry but looks like you'll be watching it here on TV".

I'd try book at Motel Seppo but I'll be travelling with my bro.

We were even toying with the idea of travelling luggage free, crashing at the airport Fri night, then pulling an all-nighter to celebrate/drown sorrows Sat night before the flight out Sunday morning.

Mate if we get to the GF we all have to find a place to watch the parade as a group. I have never been and have no idea how it works
