Opinion Guns

I had a thought just now Edgie.

Say you were doing to rob my house, or even just mug me. I don't have a gun, you do. You threaten me with it, I'm not an idiot you can have my things.

If I do have a gun, someone is quite possibly going to end up dead or at least shot at.

Am I right in this train of thought?

your gun would most likely be outside in a locked room in a safe, seperate from the ammunition in another safe or room, so provided you move like the flash its a good possibility. But in all reality im not saying people use guns for home defence in this country, and not should they. Its not a life or death situaio. Or use your flash powers to take em down.

However if they had a bat or other weapon, and you had a gun...

not correct according to this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_guns_per_capita_by_country

EDIT
but just read it is 2007

The United States owns more guns per resident, at around 0.89, than any other nation in the world. The U.S. has over 50% more firearms per capita than the next two highest nations, Serbia and Yemen at about 0.55 and three times as many as major European countries such as France and Germany

Well if you are getting mugged and someone has a gun and you do they may still shoot you regardless if you draw or not and chances are they are holding an unlicensed firearm. I would say by the time that someone was holding a gun on you mugging you even if you were carrying you wouldn't pull it unless you have the quickest draw in the west to get it out and shoot them before they react and shoot you.

What difference does it make if someone chooses to enter your house with a gun or a knife, either way if you are home and you feel you are in danger (like most people would if someone comes into your home) someone's going to end up hurt.

In both cases, the people who choose to break the law either take someone's property or attempt to enter someone's property will most likely be using illegal firearms and whatever happens to them from that point forward that they make the decision to break the law then it's their own fault. A legal gun owner in australia would have buckleys hope of using their gun in defence anyway, by the time they've put their rifle back together and found the key to unlock the trigger lock, load it they'd be shot 10 times.

The problem I see in America is the proliferation of guns and legal gun owners using them when they mistake someones intention or misread a situation and end up accidently killing someone who wasn't doing anything wrong or leaving a loaded gun around the house that the kids get to and blow themselves or another kid away. We don't have that issue here and I think many of you would be surprised how many people like to shoot as a hobby plus it's also a pretty large sport in Australia, not everyone who owns a gun simply wants to kill animals.

As long as you are properly registered and licenced there is absolutely no reason to feel like a criminal for simply owning guns, provided you keep them safe as per legal requirements ....
Likewise cyanide and testicle crushers. I mean why the hell should I be told by the namby-pamby nanny state not to keep lethal poisons and instruments of torture? I'm with you El_Scorcho.

dgmw I'd never personally own a gun, and really other than farmers, armed forces and police, I don't see why anyone would ever need a gun.

But I get that there are pistol clubs and competitive shooting and historical collectors etc. If these people are doing the right thing given the relatively stringent conditions we put on gun ownership, they shouldn't feel like a criminal.

Gun control as we have it is important. It is not a good thing that someone can walk off the street and buy a gun within an hour of deciding to do so without a licence as was the case in Queensland right up to 20 odd years ago. There was also no necessity for anyone, other than defence force personnel, to possess an automatic high powered rifle. This is a mass killing weapon. But under controlled circumstances, as we have at the moment, I have no problem with anyone owning a gun that has met the existing criterion. Some people might not like it but shooting is a sport. It is even an Olympic sport. Banning gun ownership would be about as effective as prohibition. It would enhance an already existing black market pushing an otherwise law abiding people to associate with the criminal "under world". People intent on wreaking havoc will succeed with or without strict gun laws. The Hell's Angels don't buy registered guns.

For all the stick we give america, If we had the same gun laws we'd probably be worse. All the drunken violence and punch happy bogans having access to handguns where it is a literal point and click instruction, you could imagine some of the carnage when meathead, high on a cocktail of banned substances and alcohol, spots someone looking at him funny from across the road and takes it as the biggest offence anyone has ever laid on him to the point where an unbridled fury for blood takes over

Not to mention the police force would be rendered useless.

It always strikes me how much respect and even fear the people of the USA have for their Police when they have the potential to arm themselves more lethally than the average beat cop with his 6 shooter

let's hope they never realise this. there are millions are millions of angry, stupid meatheads over there getting trained up for something negative, that's for sure. if they get the idea they can fight back they wont even think twice. you can imagine it happening when they put the whole place in lockdown.

Wasn't the 2nd Amendment written in to their constitution so that exact thing could happen? The public would be well armed if they ever needed to rebel and overthrow the government

I read once that Canada has a higher guns per capita than America. Can anyone verify this?

No.

But there's a real 'hunting' culture here- people think nothing of going off into the wilderness on the weekend to shoot moose, deer and bears. Several of my co-workers swap tall tales about their adventures over the lunch table.

I hate it, I personally hope that the bears get the better of them. These animals have every right to be left unmolested in the wilderness rather then being shot by ignorant rednecks.

Thank goodness the snows are falling out there and hunting season is over for 2013.
