So our forwards must be:

Vickery, Rioli, Breust, Pops and Gunston.

Our backs must be:

Frawley, Stratts, Birch, Gibbo.

Our ruck must be:

McEvoy.

Our mids must be;

JOM, TOM, Shiels, Smith.

Our utilities must be:

Hodge, Burgers.

That leaves...

6 spots for:

Duryea, Hartung, Sicily, Burton, Brand, Howe, Schoey...

Who does Gus take a spot from ??? Fitzy, Woody, Lovell, Pitt, Stewart... ????
I know why you've left him out, but how does the return of El Rougho alter your plans?

im always of the thought, that if it is a common question to ask if someone is good enough to stay on your list, then they probably arent and should be moved on (which is why i voted - delist)

in saying that we have 4 veterans in our backline that are unlikely to be there in a few years time, the question is.... does Clarko stick with the veterans and move Litherland out ORRRRR does Clarko phase out the veterans by including Litherland into a rotation?

He would be killing it in the Footscray side playing the high-half-back role. Clarkson and co. are no doubt figuring out an entirely different approach to the game, so we probably won't know, but if they went that route, he'd be best 22 for sure.

That was my feeling on this, they'd love a guy like this at the Dogs - think the tag line for their recruiting was, they only have to be elite at one thing, and for Gus it's defending and rebounding with pace.

The lack of a creative and clean by foot skill set hasn't suited us, but who knows in the brave new world of no holding the ball decisions and manic forward movement – maybe his time is here.

If Gus survives the cull which unfortunately has to occur with first list lodgements due on the 31st Oct, he and the coaching staff need to work together and re-invent him working to his strengths. When he has played seniors he has made the most of his chances in that lockdown defenders role.
Gus has great pace and a penetrating kick which can cause defences some worries. With Hill leaving and Hartung also struggling to cement a spot in the side, why not give Gus a chance up on the wing which will allow him to be more attacking and use his speed and kicking? When he plays purely as a defender, he is so worried about his man that he loses his ability to attack and finds very little ball. We need to re-invent ourselves as a team, so why night give Gus that chance also?

We've tried for long enough for him as a defender and it hasn't worked out. Has pace and can lock down on a small but is hopeless overhead, is not composed with his kicking and panics when left one out. Can't see him making it at the hawks down back given the premium we place on disposal.

Could we try him as a defensive forward - eg a supersized version of puopolo? Rarely loses his feet, has blinding closing pace (or if running into space not many could keep up) and good agility, is hard at the footy and is very disciplined. Is left field but worth a shot?

Even a defensive forward needs to be able to kick a goal. That is my worry. Gus from 30 out could get very very ugly.

Can't remember who the poster was, but was correct in saying has a case of the Harry O'Brien's. Run fast for a bit then kick long and high.

Is better defensively that Heretier so that is a big bonus, but with ball in hand his temperament doesn't seem quite there

I could easily have Gus in the side instead of Doc, Birch, Gibbo depending on form.
I was quite vocal during the season these guys & a few horses for courses games.
I guess that leaves me out of the match committee next year ;)

You've compared him to three players that offer completely different propositions...

Gibbo is the best third man up in the league.

Birch's distribution efficiency is elite and he is no worse a defender than Gus.

Doc whilst a better kick, based on Gus's odd performance on Eddie, suggests he could play on the smaller defenders.

With Burgers and Hodge rotating down back and a sprinkling of Burton... I don't see a spot for him.

- Gus is the first guy called up if there is an injury.
- he has done a pretty long apprenticeship
- if Gibson or Burgoyne retire he is best 22 IMO
- he does have currency but is more valuable to Hawthorn as he steps straight into the lineup without transitional issues of a recruit

Off the back of a lot of Gus should be traded, Gus isn't composed, Gus bombs long ect. I thought I would open my account with this.

I am a fan.
His breakout 2014 proved to me that he can play footy at the highest level.

I do think that from that season he had things to work on but it was more the game plan & structures that were to be his critical learning curve.
Recently his position at BH has been at CHB where I think he is developing his "tall" defensive side, I see this as his only true deficiency but it is also not his primary role to play on 193-95cm guys. He does needs to be able to do this.
I have recognised enough of his talents, as have others, to wonder why & when is this guy going to get a more consistent run at senior level again.
I am a believer...
I want more games into him for the rest of the season or I believe Gus will want to walk & the time & effort the Hawthorn Football Club have put into him will have been waisted.
Gus isn't a hard luck story.
He has worked hard to be a Hawk.
He is the age we want going forward.
He is fast & a good kick.
He needs more games now!

I'm a believer...

Just heard about Litherland and Jack Fitzpatrick , I thought Jack was a good pick up and will fit in Forward or Ruckman , and played three games did well. Also the youngest Langford has gone , and I'm far away from the action , what is happening?

Rookies are often re-listed through the Rookie draft, so he may be back. I thought Fitzpatrick did enough to get another year. I guess Hawthorn feel comfortable that Pittonet can play backup if Vickery or McEvoy get injured.

Litherland is interesting. I assume he was offered up for trade and no other club was at all interested? Otherwise we would have taken any pick for him.

All the best to him for his future. I always thought he was a decent player who would have played far more games at one of the weaker clubs.

He might be a good ordinary player in another team.
He has speed and a long kick, just not great overhead or with kicking accuracy

No, he is a big loss.

Not all players have the full flourish of skills that a Burgoyne has, and if they did then you couldn't afford them in your salary cap.

I don't understand how you can offer Josh Gibson a contract, those finish to the season showed just how badly washed up he is and then you delist a bloke that can be an important part of the puzzle going forward for the next five seasons.

He will definitely get picked up, but if Gibson or Duryea were in a similar position of having been delisted it would be doubtful any club would touch them.

You think nobody would pick up Doc? Wow

Gibbo isn't washed up - he was being played as a KPD, which he clearly isn't.

You would think that if he doesn't get an afl gig he would crack in at vfl, wafl lvl & attempt to get another shot as a mature age recruit in 2018.
