Given that Maxy's out this week, who do we replace him with. The two frontrunners, I suggest, are Goose and Gwilt. I think Goose is obviously a better player, but on the other hand he's returning from injury, and Gwilt played until he was recently omitted. So which would you choose? Would you choose somebody else?

Personally, I'm going with Gwilt, I think... but I'm happy to be talked out of it.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. Matthew Ferguson has been an emergency for the last two weeks (along with Shane Birss & Fergus Watts) and I would think is first choice to fill that spot if Maguire is given another week at Casey.

I really think we should give Goose at least another week in the VFL. Apparently he only played about half the game? that suggests that he isn't totally ready.

Maybe it is worth giving Ferguson a chance - Gwilt has shown what he can do in defence earlier in the year.

I agree to give Ferguson a chance. He played very well on the pre-season game against the lions and has been on the emergency list for a few games now. I don't think we should use Gwilt. I don't see him as a great defender. He did do OK when we required him for Fishers, Maguires and Hudghtons absency but Fevola did kick 6 on him and Barry Hall kicked 4 I think. His decision making/disposal is poor IMO, and that's why I think he was omitted in the first place. (Also beause our other defenders were back). Maybe give Maguire one more week in the VFL and yeah I'd like to see Ferguson:thumbsu:

Give Ferguson a go, played alright a couple years back for memory and hasnt had a chance since, so i think he should. Give Goose and Hamill another week in the VFL just to make sure.

I dont think Gwilt is that good to be honest.

Lyon won't risk goose, they have already said he won't play. I have a fealing ferg will play and Sammy Fish, Ferg and Blake will share the big forwards. (Unlucky for us didak is still playing playing)

Do people on here think Gwilt has what it takes to be an AFL player for the next 5-10 years?

I think he can play. The only problem is he should never ever play full back. He showed in a couple of games he can find a bit of the pill. If gwilt was in the side, i would prefer to see him play on a forward flank/wing/loose man in defence type role.

I don't think Gwilt should ever play full back or take key fowards

Thats true hes not a full back. Hes got a nice kick so i think if he plays he should play in the forward line, but having said that i dont think hes that good.

He (Gwilt) didnt do too badly on Fev .........was breaking even with him until the Blues had a good patch in the midfield and Fev got away from him then, but he would have got away from anyone.

He was probably in his first 30 games and played out of position......was a fair effort.

He has good pace and agility for a guy around 6'2 an his skills are good.
I really like the way he moves and would be happy to take him if you dont want him. Give him another 30-40 games experience and he will be better than average.
I find it weird, but I do agree with a Carlton fan, :D.

LEt's remeber Ferguson isn't an overly tall player, is capable of playing against some key forwards but not all, but also has pace and agility to play on the smaller forwards.
I reckon where pretty lucky Rocca is't playing, that could have forcedMaguire back early.

Cloke will proabably taken by Fisher.
Then if young reid plays a bit up forward, i'm not so sure ferguson should play on him, (196 as compared to 187cm) Blake isn't much taller either. Medhurst might be an option for Leigh Fisher
Theres also the chance Fraser might be rested up forward a bit.
Will the lack of experience of both Reid and Cloke meen that we don't have to rush Maguire back??
Or will their height stretch Ferguson, Fisher and Blake just that little bit too much?

Blake will take Fraser when he goes forward (and probably go with him in the middle as well).
Reid looked more like a lead-and-mark type of player, which is probably expected for a young kid. You'd be surprised if he takes many contested marks. I reckon Ferguson is a good match up for him.
Fisher has to go to Cloke. Baker to Neon Leon. Gram for Medhurst.

that just leaves Didak?

I love him and I reckon the baptism of fire at full back will hold him in good stead. I reckon his performances really lifted over the weeks and he was unlucky to be dropped. Can play.

What do you think of this? Gilbert goes back and plays a key defensive role while we bring in Ferg Watts who goes forward. Gilbert can play down back and is in good form. This would take away any risk associated with bringing in someone from the twos.
