I think people seem to forget that at the same time as we were recruiting the likes of Shaw, Mattner, Kennedy, Mumford and Richards we also brought in players like Tingay, Daffy, Playfair, Armstrong, Walsh, Talia... Every club is making picks like this each season and the majority of them don't work out.

Brennan, Seaby, Bradshaw, Everett x2, Spangher never did much for us either

Morton is in his own unique category

It's not the logic of identifying and recruiting fringe players that I'm frustrated by, it's our execution of it.
But surely people realise that by its very nature there will be a shitload of misses. When this current crew are off the list, I'll judge their impact. I would be interested to know which bottom 4 teams have recruited fringe players and DFAs and had them make a big impact.

Bradshaw was well on his way to being a steal was averaging 3.1 goals a game then he did his knee again :(

No issue with recruiting players who will be best 22 on arrival.

Those advocating the recruitment of any 30+ year old ruckman would do well to remember the Spider flop.

And those advocating the recruitment of Mason Cox should be escorted out and placed in mandatory hotel quarantine, until it can be proven that they’re not undercover Collingwood agents up to no good.

Three stand out selection issues for me:
1. Blakey has not played a decent game all season. Gets selected after a token dropping.
2. McInerney by contrast played some games where he was more than useful. The contrast in his treatment and Blakey is stark. Expect other Clubs will chase him in the Trade period and his Manager would be negligent not to consider offers.
3. Melican will be flogged tonight as usual. Will cost 2-3 goals minimum, not that it matters in a game where we will be soundly beaten.

Gould and L Taylor need to be isolated on a fat farm for several months ahead of pre season training. I do not know if Sam Grey is cooked or not but my hopes he would easily be best 22 this year have been dashed.

Hi Horry

1. Blakey showed us last year he has it within him. Who knows he might have performed well in limited training or perhaps they think his profile might at least demand an accountable opponent?
2. McInnerney - Match up position where? Does he have a niggle we are unaware of?
3. Melican - (GWS - Cameron Himmelberg Finlayson - tall) I am just guessing, but height? Or maybe it's 'time to piss or get off the pot' and doing him a favour to try and find him a bidder /trade at year end? Painful to watch the poor bloke.

Selection is a dogs breakfast - doesn't really matter other than rotating and testing.

BTW
I urge folks concerned about Gould to watch the scratch match (Hawks highlights unfortunately - posted on the other thread)
See if you can pick out Gould - Tip: either salon bleached hair or is Coogee beach sun doing it? They had him running lots - even some mid time
He looks slim to me. A bit slow, but a footballer, not an athlete. Too short & inexperienced yet for the key talls GWS.

Terribly difficult year for L Taylor and S Grey to feel part of the side and find their place in this silly year - Prolly only just( in hub) learnt everyones name nickname let alone the game style or their footy attributes? Give em a chance
But -Taylor definitely seems fat

Sorry to be contrary - Just like you , just BF banter
Cheers

A little hyperbolic on McInerney there I think. He is 19 and in his second year after being drafted. I think he should've got more of an opportunity, and I also think there is a double standard where Blakey and the rest are concerned. But with a player as young as McInerney, he is owed nothing. He has neither the runs on the board, nor has he got the kind of dominant game that demands selection. The fact is he is not strong, he gets pummelled in tackles and I think it has such a wear and tear on his body that by later in the game it starts to effect his composure. I've noticed in the relatively few games I've seen of him at senior level, but also in the NEAFL, that the McInerney you see in the first and second halves of any match are two different kids. He usually starts out poised and relatively clean, and by the end, is running on empty with panicked disposal.

If I was to hazard a guess, I would say that the coaches maybe don't want him to be losing confidence by his good work early in matches being overshadowed by his physical limitations late in matches.

great to see Foot get a game, loving the debutants this year. I was looking yp to see how many games COR has played, 21, and discovered he is 187cm tall. I thought he was 180 or so, worth persisting with though.
