Data from footywire. To check the draft order see the thread here.

Footywire says: "While we make every effort to keep up to date with player contracts, it is likely that our data may at times be out of date, incomplete or inaccurate. If you find any player contracts that need updating, please let us know using our brand new contract submission form."

any deal for whitfield even in a salary dump would have the other club giving something up for him like the grundy deal rather than gws throwing a pick on top
Sure, the Pies got a 2nd rounder in that trade, but the difference there is that the Pies are contributing around $300k a year to Grundy's contract until it ends in 2027, and Grundy even accepted a small pay cut to come to the Dees.

Those are some pretty unusual circumstances.

Maybe not

Did you actually read the story?

GWS has shown no inclination to trade the talented Whitfield and has significantly improved its salary cap position after losing Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper, Tanner Bruhn and Bobby Hill last off-season.

But Whitfield’s situation is vastly different to Bowes given he is well established at GWS and they have cap space to retain him even as his salary hits $1.1 million or more next year.

Just a media puff piece for the gullible.

Maybe not

Anyone got an archive link of this?

The headline is very misleading.
The article basically says the reverse, the Giants have no interest in trading and have no real salary cap issues.

More pathetic clickbait from the HUN, which is their bread and butter these days.

No. It’s clickbate and the club has said as such.
Stupid VFL media rubbish like this had Whitfield concerned enough he approached the club in the off season and Kingers said not to worry as he is important to the club.

None of those players are going anywhere. Whitfield, Cogs, Greene, Kenners, Kelly, Haynes won’t be leaving and will be our 1st one club players.
It’s an easy article to print saying “Giants would want to trade out well paid stars”. Gets clicks from the gullible and technically not “making stuff up” as they aren’t saying the Giants want to.

Haynes’ future will be a discussion point as the club assesses its list and manages its always-under-pressure salary cap in the lead-up to the exchange period.

Haynes is on almost $1 million for the final year of his back-ended contract in 2024 and is expected to come up in trade talks at season’s end.

But whether there will be much interest remains unclear. GWS may have to contribute some of his salary as part of any move back home to Victoria.

So another nothing story.

Like the Whitfield “They should move him on but the club has no interest in doing so” article a few days ago.

Almost a million? They have no idea how much he is on.

Kingers was on AFL360 saying the club has the cap in hand after years of mismanagement.
Reality is none of us know but citing the coach not saying they remain in trouble which would have caused the list manager to shoot him is not evidence there isn’t a problem.

true.
The club as been pretty open saying that the cap is in a good space. In previous years they have been open about it being very tight.

That said, we may not be in a position to match a good offer for Himmelberg and to a lesser extent Ash.

Unless you are able to do a salary dump deal, then you can match the offer and keep him or force a trade or up his value and get band 1 compo

Losing Himmelberg wouldn't be the worst thing for them. They'd bring in a third top 10 pick and be in a great spot to trade for Reid if the eagles were open to it.

Judging by the responses in this thread, I'm sure its nothing to worry about, but just to give the GWS BF community another right-of-reply:

GWS GIANTS

Stephen Coniglio $850,000-$950,000, 29, Midfielder

Toby Greene $850,000-$950,000, 29, Forward

Lachie Whitfield $850,000-$950,000, 28, Defender

Nick Haynes $850,000-$950,000, 31, Defender

Josh Kelly $800,000-$900,000, 28, Midfielder

Harry Himmelberg $700,000-$800,000, 27, Forward/Defender

Sam Taylor $700,000-$800,000, 24, Defender

The Giants have been forced to overpay for their midfield stars amid soaring interest from rival clubs every year. It was an unsustainable cycle which has caused concern at AFL headquarters. How does the league assist the Giants’ bloated cap? Josh Kelly’s salary continues to rise in coming years, while Lachie Whitfield and Stephen Coniglio are also on a packet. Toby Greene has deserved every cent and Sam Taylor holds the defence together. If the Giants lose Harry Himmelberg, the money could go on a new deal to keep No. 1 pick Aaron Cadman. But the big spend is in the engine room.

As has been said earlier I think I’ll believe the club regarding our cap being ok now rather than reporters known for being horribly wrong.
For instance, we didn’t over pay in fact they stayed for less than what was on offer elsewhere.
We have always been up front in the past saying our cap was in bad shape. See no reason to disbelieve then now we are saying it’s headed in the right direction.

Fleeton and Gillbee delisted.

Fleeton in particular seems a bit of a surprise? Was named in the 2023 VFL Team of the Year just a few weeks ago and had the following stats at VFL level:

Cameron Fleeton, GWS Giants
15 matches this season
Averages 22.7 disposals, 85.6% kicking efficiency, 84.1% disposal efficiency, 8.6 intercepts, 8.1 marks

At just 21 you'd think unless there are other issues, there will be some level of interest in him.

Maybe he will be resigned by GWS?
I am a bit surprised, it means we can't trade him now.

It’s an area of strength for us.. sounds like Haynes will stay.

If this ( pick 16) was on the trade table ( possibly combined with 2024r2),
what offers would be made for it.
