OK, so second game for the Allies in the AFL Under 18 National Championships, and a second defeat. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-06-18/u18-fisher-inspires-wa-to-victory-over-allies

WESTERN AUSTRALIA 3.3 6.5 9.8 10.9 (69)
ALLIES 1.1 2.4 4.6 7.10 (52)

GOALS: Marshall 2, Sproule, Maguire, Allison, Davis, Hampton
BEST: Mutch, Perryman, Scheer, Marshall, Sproule, Macreadie

Midfielder Koby Mutch (18 disposals) and Brad Scheer (17) were the major ball winners for the Allies, while Harry Perryman (12 touches) battled hard all day. Allies forward Todd Marshall displayed why so many clubs are interested in securing his services with two goals in attack from limited opportunities. (Comment: Actually, didn't think he showed that much.) Giants academy member Zac Sproule was inaccurate in front of goal (1.3) but created plenty of chances as a half-forward.

That followed the Allies earlier defeat by SA in round 1. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-06-04/u18s-graham-leads-sa-to-commanding-win

SOUTH AUSTRALIA 2.3 7.7 10.11 15.11 (101)
ALLIES 2.5 4.8 5.9 8.9 (57)

GOALS: Bowes 2, Perryman, Fisher, Ballenden, Davis, Sproule, Marshall
BEST: Perryman, Mutch, Rolls, Fisher, Williams

Kobe Mutch continued his strong season with 22 disposals and 11 tackles in a hard-working effort, while Greater Western Sydney academy prospect Harry Perryman played in the forward half and had 18 touches and a goal. Perryman can play in a number of positions, and displayed his ability to kick on both feet around goal. Perryman started his day in busy fashion, but was wasteful in attack, kicking three behinds in the opening quarter. Todd Marshall's opening mark, snap and goal was impressive.

I have to think that the very high ratings of the GWS academy kids (plus Marshall) are a fair amount of over-the-top hyperbole based on the concerted campaign against the academies. Sure, I have no doubt that there are some good prospects amongst them, but to claim that 4 (plus Bowes) are in the top 10 of the draft - if they were we'd be seeing a much better performance from the Allies. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the games go. If the Allies go 0-4, it would be hard to claim that they contain half the top 10 in the draft.

And on the Riverina, have some old news.

Flip to page five ... "News comes from Narrandera as we are going to press that several new clubs have been formed in Riverina since the Sydney visit. Wagga also writes re South Melbourne visit. Both matters will be given full space next issue."

As the closer Sydney club, we should certainly continue to support the Australian game in Narrendera, Wagga and all points south and west of Sydney.

Mate, your are older than I thought....:p

Under 18 AFL Championship Game 3 for Allies (now 0-3):
VIC METRO 5.1 5.6 6.9 10.14 (74)
ALLIES 0.5 4.7 6.10 8.12 (60)

GOALS: Sproule 2, Brown, Hampton, Allison, Rolls, Perryman, Marshall
BEST: Perryman, Bowes, Mutch, Scheer, Allison, Spargo* (bold = GWS Academy, * = 2017 draft)

The result looked to be almost elementary as Metro kicked five goals to nil in the first term. But the Allies hit back with four goals to nil of their own in the second quarter to get back in touch. The Allies, coached by Tadgh Kennelly, hit the lead halfway through the third term as Jack Bowes (20 disposals and seven inside 50s) and Harry Perryman (18) started to exert their influence. The match was in the balance even into the final term before Callum Brown, the son of Collingwood's Gavin, kicked a clever snap out of a pack to drag Metro over the line with only a few minutes left in the contest. Greater Western Sydney academy member Charlie Spargo was lively up forward, while Jacob Allison also worked hard for the Allies with 14 touches and a goal.

The U16 NSW/ACT Rams will now head to the Gold Coast for Round 2 & 3 at the start of July.

The Southern boys ( NSW) generally play a much more physical and structured style of play to the NT, the Northern boys tend to play a open running style and are generally not as big or strong.

Just watching the Allies v Vic Country and one of the commentators made an interesting comment. He pointed out that of the 10 academy boys to have debuted this year, 6 of them have done so with a club other than the one they were attached to in the academy. Mentioned the likes of Howard and Austin at Port and some kid at North. "So the academies are providing players for the whole league". And one of the other commentators have gone "yeah, they can't get them all"

But hey - that doesn't fit with the prevailing narrative so they should probably not be saying that. Eddie will be angry.

Mutch just robbed of a goal. Called touched, replays showed nobody got with 3 feet of it. Liked his game thus far.

Also like the look of Curtley's brother, run dash and a bit of poise.

Marshall looking ok, didn't see him last time.

Sproule and McCreadie both looking good too.

More thoughts later.

Poor third quarter there from the Allies but stand outs from Mutch and Perryman (who is rated by the commentators as our best prospect) Sproule also pretty good.

Mutch robbed of a goal again. Marshall marked on the line and kicked it rather than just let it go.

Setterfield not playing - that's why no comments on him.

Fantastic win by the Allies coming from way behind in the last. Leaves Vic Country with the spoon.

Spargo goes alright. Will be a good pick up next year.

Mutch close to BOG, with 28 to lead all comers, but that McCluggage kid from country is pretty special.

Didn't see much of McCreadie but what I saw I liked.

Can see why the wraps are on Marshall, very very good.

Did well the boys snatching the win with 2 minutes on the clock.

Interesting reading Twomey's form top 20 piece on the afl website. After pumping up Macreadie as the #2 pick earlier in the year, he is now not even in his top 20. Only Setterfield and Perryman make the list.

No doubt his game is to build credibility among the watchers by acknowledging the players who stood out at the champs. Watch him revert back to his agenda and overhyping academy prospects in the months leading up to the draft.

I also found that interesting. Cal was driving the 4-5 GWS academy picks in the top 25 bus, so maybe he rates the other three in the 21-25 range?!

Under 16 AFL Championships Round 2: http://aflnswact.com.au/blog/2016/07/05/u16-nswact-defeat-qld-round-2/

NSW/ACT took a bit to get going in the slippery/wet conditions. But after half-time they controlled the game on their terms.
Final score: NSW/ACT 13.11 (89) defeated Queensland 9.12 (66).
Goals: Jackson Carmody 3, Shaydan Close 3, Nick Blakey 2, Jai Reed 2, James Peatling 2, Chris Holten.
Best: Nick Blakey, Jai Reed, Shaydan Close, Mathew Walker, Jackson Carmody, Shaun Driscoll.

The Rams will now prepare for the third and final game, which will decide the U16 Div 2 National Champs against Tasmania on Saturday, July 9 at Southport.

Whats the deal with points deficit? How far are clubs allowed to go? With reports 2017 is a bumper draft we might struggle to get picks.

Up to the value of pick 18, IIRC.
