Good to see the media around Briggs but just so long as they don't build him up too much although I think the club will support him with that and he has Shipley around him as well, and going up against Archie Smith who has 5 years experience on him and 90 odd games of senior football he would have learnt a lot from the game
Only Peatling stood out today from the academy players in the NEAFL and with 4 more games left still time for them to stand out but at this stage I can see Briggs, Peatling and maybe two others being picked up

Like the look of Peatling and another 2 goals today just makes me like him more. That he’s from cursed toongabbie just makes it even better again.

Would he be classed as a small forward?
I think Richardson could be a good pick up for needs although will need two years or more till he would be AFL ready and as a HBF he can learn in the reserves

Would he be classed as a small forward?

Probably, I don’t know how tall he is and how much growing he’s still got in him, but you’d definitely call him small to medium at the moment. I realise that we have a few of them at the moment (Greene, Langdon, Daniels, Tiziani etc. etc.) but he’s been named amongst the best on a couple of occasions in the NEAFL already, and... and... Western Sydney - I mean, that’s why we’re here.

The others as possibles are Budd (193/90), Pollock (177/76), Delahunty (192/90 draft eligible next year along with Thomas Green) and Richardson (184/75)
I can't remember seeing Lucas in any of the NEAFL games and not sure if Banuelos and Rowston are academy kids but with 4 games left still time for some of them to put in a couple of impressive games and be noticed
From the NEAFL.com.au website
James Peatling
Forward
183/71
An agile small-to-medium-sized forward from western Sydney who loves to fly for his marks and knows where the goals are. Defensive tackling pressure has also been impressive inside 50.

Kieren Briggs
Forward
199/96
Another western Sydney local who played as a key forward for GWS in the academy series, but is versatile enough to have played as a key defender in the NEAFL. Good speed and agility for his size and a powerful kick.

Jeromy Lucas
Forward/midfielder
184/81
A medium-sized forward/midfielder who has a great ability to find the footy, is a quality overhead mark, and finishes his work in front of goals. Kicked three goals in a game of NEAFL last season and will combine his school footy at Xavier College with academy games and the NEAFL again in 2018.

Shaun Driscoll
Small defender/midfielder
183/69
Also has a brother draft eligible next year
A lightly framed half-back/wingman with fantastic endurance and speed, Driscoll is a good overhead mark for his size that covers plenty of territory during a game. An outside midfielder but has the capacity to play inside if needed.

Mathew Walker
Forward
187/76
The medium forward kicked multiple bags of goals in the NEAFL last season and finished the year in the All Stars game in Grand Final week. Powerful athlete with quality skills on both sides of his body and a big vertical leap.

From this list I can see Briggs, Walker and then 2 of the others being picked up by the club. Can only see a bid coming on Briggs late 2nd round at the earliest and then depending on list spots one could be in the main draft and the rest rookies

How strongly (ie with staff & resources) is GWS, in its very large 2,100,000 multicultural area of WS, promoting its Next Generation Multicultural Academy?

We should be attracting more ethnic groups that are very athletic, & are good prospects of succeeding in the AFL eg particularly those from Islander & Sudanese backgrounds.

Given that Western Sydney is the largest multicultural area of Australia, with expected very strong population growth predicted, should GWS be spending more in this area? Should the AFL provide additional funding to GWS to turbocharge its vast multicultural potential?

GWS doesn't have an NGA covering western Sydney. GWS has a normal academy that they can recruit anyone to so there's no benefit to split it by heritage. GWS has an NGA covering the Murray area of NSW, which includes one of the guys coming through this year (can't remember who off the top of my head).

Given that Sydney's western suburbs are easily the biggest multicultural area of Aust., there should be a Next Generation Academy there.

In fact, the NGA philosophy (which recognises that multicultural groups require, usually, a different, more nuanced, approach) probably dictates this area should have the biggest NGA -with the biggest number of specialist multicultural staff & highest NGA funding. Do you agree?

What would this proposed NGA do that isn't overlapping the existing club academy?
I am not suggesting limiting or reducing the resources/staff etc. on the present GWS Academy- or for it to be diverted to multicultural players.

The NGA philosophy recognises multicultural players are different- & require specialist needs & recruitment/development strategies. Do you accept the validity of this NGA philosophy?
I (& the NGA philosophy) am suggesting additional staff/funding needs to be spent on multicultural players...& WS population of 2,100,000 has, by FAR, the highest nos.

Do you agree that anglo/celtic juniors are over-represented (as a % of the WS population) in junior AF Clubs in the western suburbs? Why?
Why can't we recruit a higher % of non-anglo/celtic kids in the WS, roughly equal to their high % in the WS?

Briggs, Walker and Peatling are the only draftable talents from that list imo Driscoll and Lucas both have potential to be role players at the next level with us, Driscoll may be worth rookieing but if we take Walker and Peatling we'll have too many similar players drafting Lucas as well

To be fair we have only drafted 1 player out of the WS academy so far and he isnt white.

Was always going to take a while to get the production line out of the WS Academy when starting from zero.

I dont think an NG academy would add anything different to the academies already there.

I mean they do the same thing except concentrate on 1st gen Aussies which is what the current academy already does except they are for all.

Edit. I'm sure theres some guys or girls on here who are involved in them or know a lot more than I do about the academies there.
Anyone got any idea on the % of "new australians" in the academies?

I agree we have no real use for an NGA program, we have a large multi-cultural program and already have access to the players, black white or brindle.

With regard to turning kids to AFL over other sports, unlike most of the nation that means a very significant percentage of kids, regardless of race (again).
Consistent growing reports of schools dropping other sports to take on AFL show we are doing something right there also.

Can you provide some details ie what schools, when, what other sports were dropped, how many kids started playing AF etc.?
Not without investing more time than I care to, there have been a couple of different reports on Macquarie sports radio in the last week or so, the thrust of the stories was the supposed diminishing interest in rugby union in particular and in league to a lesser extent.
The reference point was the impact of AFLs focus on regular consistent school clinics was taking hold and should be seen as a lesson to the codes as to what happens if they don't invest in grassroots, the Giants were mentioned in each case as to "how it should be done".

Totally agree mate, great to see some young Canberra products being mentioned! Budd, Pollock and Richardson are all good prospects, I see a name ‘Will Clark’ pop up on the NEAFL team list often, anyone know much about him? Seems to hold his own at that level at least!

Based on that map, the NGA should only come into consideration for the Giants in the small areas north of Murray River. I guess Zac Williams (drafted out of Albury) is an example of that due to his indigenous heritage but I wonder how many more indigenous/multicultural players will come out of those areas and if the Giants will put in the effort required to produce more players just north of the Murray.

Courtesy of ESPN Some commentary on next years academy prospects it is a long way off but with these two as prospects how it effects this years options for the draft. Green as a big bodied mid and Delahunty as a third tall maybe or KPD if he grows and at 90kgs already he is projecting to be large

Projecting to be one of the first picked in 2019, GWS Academy prospect Tom Green was the clear standout of the day. The 188cm, 85kg, midfielder -- who starred for the Allies during the Under-18 Championships -- amassed 27 disposals, 16 contested possessions, seven marks, 10 tackles, five clearances, four inside 50s and two goals for NSW/ACT. At stoppages, Green was the prolific ball winner, often winning first possession. He showed a few tricks, manoeuvring through traffic, bursting through opposition tacklers at speed, hitting forward 50m targets and the scoreboard, showing he is more than a one-dimensional ball winner.
Taking numerous intercept marks in defence, 192cm, 90kg, Liam Delahunty was one of his side's best performers. The GWS Academy product secured 23 disposals, seven marks and seven rebound 50s.

Can anyone give me a ranking of the top academy draft prospects as we head into draft season??

All a chance some less than others
Briggs main draft
Walker main/rookie
Peatling rookie
Budd rookie
Driscoll rookie
Pollock rookie

It depends on what happens in the delist/trade period and how many list spots are available with how many are taken

Mitch Maguire had a fantastic final for Canberra Demons today; and is having a great season. Presumably his form is one reason why Demons have done well this season. I wonder if GWS are looking at him for a rookie position at all? I think after two years out of the academy there would be no link to us to get any preferential access, so certainly no guarantee to get him as we'll be at least 11th in line in the rookie draft. His height may be an issue - at 177 cms, and we've got a couple of others around there - but would be a good story if we did.
