GIANTS Will Field National Women’s League Team in 2017

The Giants have been announced as one of eight successful AFL Clubs provided a licence to field a team in the new National Women’s League (NWL) in 2017. The NWL will launch its inaugural season in February next year.

GIANTS CEO David Matthews said today’s decision was a watershed moment for the game and for female athletes in New South Wales and the ACT.

“This is one of the most significant announcements in the game’s history and certainly one of the most important things the GIANTS will ever do,” Mr Matthews said.

“Today’s decision opens up a clear pathway for women and girls looking to play Australian Football at the elite level. The opportunity this provides females in New South Wales and the ACT is unprecedented.

“We’re pleased our bid has been vindicated and our commitment to the promotion and development of female sport has been recognised by the AFL. We are in the unique positon of having a proven track record when it comes to building a club from the ground up. We know what it takes to establish a new team and take the game to all corners of the community from day one.

“Our objectives in establishing a women’s AFL team are also aligned to the AFL’s broader strategic aims of providing comprehensive pathways for female athletes and developing a truly national code.

“We have world class facilities and play out of some of the best stadia in the country which will provide the ideal platform for growing the women’s game. We are proud to be the flag bearers for female athletes looking to play Australian Football in New South Wales and the ACT and can’t wait for the inaugural NWL season to get under way next year.”

The Giants have recent success in establishing new teams in the AFL and NEAFL, will be confident in the addition of a women's team to the club. The initiative also follows the Giants commitment to grassroots community support, social inclusion and diversity across NSW and the ACT.

The other seven NWL teams are Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle, Melbourne and Western Bulldogs. The other AFL club applicants, Richmond, Geelong, North Melbourne and St Kilda, along with the Eagles, have been granted provisional licences to be part of an expanded women's league in 2018, depending on development of the game in their areas.

The Competition Schedule

The 2017 competition will feature six home-and-away rounds, with the top four playing two semi-finals and a Grand Final.

The women's Grand Final could be played in the week between the end of the NAB Challenge and the start of the AFL season, or as a curtain-raiser to the AFL season opener at the MCG on either a Thursday or Saturday night.

Just going through the names:

I think Katie Klatt was the American who tried out.

Are the two Ghirardellos sisters? (both with decent height)

Is that Mai Nguyen in the photo on the right?

I might be wrong here, but I'm wondering whether Sarah Tutt is the sister of AFL footballer Jason Tutt (originally from Canberra).

Saw the name Sophie Steele, sister of Jack mentioned. Getting her might go some way to keeping him. Brother and sister - both local - great combination. Lots of marketing potential.

Then again, if it's anything like my relationship with my sister, it might make him want to look elsewhere really really quickly:p
I've heard talk of a father-daughter rule, but you'd think a brother-sister rule would also be on the cards.

Who will be the GIANTS' marquees?

Possibly GIANTS marquee players Mai Nguyen and Maddy Collier after the GIANTS were announced as one of the team's in the inaugural NWL.
The 2017 AFL National Women's League (NWL) will begin to really take shape this week as the eight inaugural clubs prepare to name their desired marquee signings. The GIANTS were recently named as one of eight AFL clubs to be granted a licence to field a team in the inaugural NWL starting next season.

Ahead of the deadline, girlsplayfooty.com takes a look at the possible signings for the GIANTS’ inaugural women’s team.

AFL NSW/ACT employee Maddy Collier is an astute defender and accomplished kick who can roll through the midfield. She has bounced back from the heartache of a pre-match injury last year that denied her a Bulldogs debut with a vengeance.

Maddy Keryk may only be young but she was a junior star for Victoria and she provides a very bullish and strong body around the contest, something GWS sorely missed in its last exhibition match where the GIANTS struggled to affect clearances.

Seaford’s Kate Gillespie-Jones has gone from strength-to-strength since being involved in the Victorian academy. The ruck is a huge beast on the field and is capable of resting forward and back. She could be a commanding presence for the undersized GIANTS.

AFL NSW/ACT has been doing some great work in the past few years to accelerate the game in a non-traditional state, with a solid framework and collection of talent already firmly in place.

Keeghan Tucker is new to this level after a junior career spent focusing on cricket, but the key forward has a natural ability that is the envy of most.

As a medium-sized forward, she would link up well with another exceptional natural talent in Rebecca Beeson, who may be smaller in stature but big in heart and vision. The pair could strike up a handy forward partnership, but a they need a taller target to work around.

Mai Nguyen has been a strong presence in both of her exhibition games this year, and if the talented midfielder-cum-half-forward can juggle the league with her work as a physio, she will be an excellent ambassador not just for her state, but for the multicultural aspect of AFL.

Other potential interstate recruits could be someone like WA's Kira Phillips if Fremantle isn't interested, as New South Wales is sorely lacking in some commanding targets around the ground.

West Australian pair Renee Forth and Emma Swanson has been announced as the GIANTS’ inaugural marquee players in the first National Women’s League to commence in 2017. Following the appointment of Tim Schmidt as the coach of the GIANTS’ women’s team, the club’s two marquee players were unveiled at Tom Wills Oval at GIANTS HQ on Wednesday. The duo comes to the GIANTS with a wealth of experience and achievements as two of Western Australia’s best female footballers. Forth has represented her state four times, captained Western Australia and currently captains the Coastal Titans in the WAWFL.
The 29-year-old was drafted to the Melbourne Demons with pick 41 in the 2013 Draft and represented Melbourne in 2013 and 2014, and the Western Bulldogs in 2015 in women’s exhibition matches. Joining Forth at the club is 21-year-old Emma Swanson who was first drafted to the Melbourne Demons at just 18 years old with pick 29 in the 2013 Draft.

Canberra Capitals club legend Jessica Bibby is throwing her hat in the ring to join the GWS Giants for the National Women's League foundation season.
Bibby had been one of the more prolific basketballers in WNBL history...
But the creation of the NWL has the now retired star basketballer aiming to play the sport she truly loves by taking part in one of a series of athlete search programs hosted by the Giants.
