Women's Footy GWS Giants - AFL Women's

For the next few years we'll need to get creative and look at supplementing our list with mature athletes from other sports. Particularly with the expanded list number. Someone needs to talk to Stein about whether there are some mature bodies in the NSW/ACT athletics scene looking for an elite team sport.

I think this has merit, though our lack of focus on footballers and consequential focus on athletes cost us this year.
Ideally a significantly smaller section of the list would be in that groul next year, 10 - 20 percent max.

There is a decent chance that the league, player payments/contracts and long term commitments may be significantly upgraded for the next AFLW season given what appears to be strong public support and interest, if so that would seriously help us attract and retain players.

Agree. I think we'll still need to be a bit creative. I look at Cinda and think how well she went adapting. She added a hard edge you just wouldn't get from a young local player.

100% despite the suspension, she had the opposition rather intimidated at times, loved that :)

Don't think this has been posted anywhere on our board yet ... http://www.gwsgiants.com.au/news/2017-03-21/barr-named-final-rising-star

Number one draft pick Nicola Barr has been named one of the final NAB AFL Women's Rising Star nominees of the AFL Women’s season. Barr collected 12 possessions playing off half-back in the GIANTS’ 32-point loss against the Western Bulldogs at UNSW Canberra Oval on Saturday night. Despite the GIANTS falling short of posting their second win of the AFLW season, Barr led the resistance, displaying the consistency that has her seen her regularly feature in her side’s best players.

Coach Tim Schmidt said it was exciting to see the development of one of his most promising young players over the inaugural season. “Nic’s move to the half back line over the last three games has been exactly what we as a team have been after.” he said. “Her defensive side has improved out of sight while giving us plenty of offensive attack from her elite running ability and penetrating kicks on the run. She is still learning the game, but her willingness to ask questions and implement the advice given to her is helping her become one of the most dangerous half-backs in the competition.”

The first pick in the historic NAB AFL Women’s Draft, Barr was awarded the 2016 Mostyn Medal as the best and fairest player in the AFL Sydney Women’s Competition and represented New South Wales at the 2014 National Under-18 Championships. At 20-years-old, Barr was drafted to the GIANTS from Sydney University in the AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division. She also played soccer at an elite level as a junior. Barr said she was surprised to receive the accolade after an up-and-down season for the club as a whole. “It’s really nice when your hard work pays off and I’m very lucky to be in a team that’s helped me develop over these last few weeks, I couldn’t have done it without the girls,” she said. “There’s some really good experience in our team with the likes of Jess Dal Pos and Emma Swanson and the coaches have been fantastic. I think I’ve taken my time to work into the competition but it’s nice to be able to finish on a good note.”

Barr follows in the footsteps of ruck Erin McKinnon who was the club’s first NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star nominee in round three.

Congratulations Nicola, you have played really well for your first season of AFL - a tough introduction, but a well deserved accolade.

Back pocket: Renee Tomkins, GWS Giants (Penrith, NSW)
Pick 96 in the AFLW Draft, the former Western Sydney Wanderers W-League player is the very definition of a one-percenter footballer. According to Champion Data, Renee Tomkins had 33 one-percenters for the season, 50% more than her nearest opponent, and she led the rebound 50s with 24. The 30-year-old is the rock the Giants built their defence around, one that was tested in 2017.

Interchange: Erin McKinnon, GWS Giants (Sydney University, NSW)
Taken as pick 48 in the draft, Erin McKinnon is the youngest and tallest player on an AFLW list. Continuing on from her excellent form in last year’s National Youth Girls Championships, the Giants ruck averaged 22 hit-outs per match, second only to Collingwood marquee, Emma King. Most impressively, she often ran out full games throughout the season and had to be rested during training through the week considering her intense workload. It’s all experience that sets her up to flourish further in the future.

Interchange: Jessica Dal Pos, GWS Giants (Darebin, VIC)
In a year that was tough going for a side in non-traditional AFL territory, the Victorian import gave the Giants hope. Typically kept out of the Darebin midfield, Jess Dal Pos showed how good she is in a ball-winning position if given the time. She harassed opponents at stoppages to amass 49 tackles for the year and also collected 29 clearances. At just 23-years-old, Dal Pos should be a vital part of the GWS engine room for a decade to come.

For mine, Jess Dal Pos was the clear best & fairest for GWS, but some great talent in the team - just needs a little time to nurture & develop, and maybe one or two additional experienced players. Hmmm, where have we seen that before?

I voted for Dally in the members choice section of the Gabrielle Trainor Medal awards.

The lack of love for Swanson is disturbing

Missed too much of a very short season.

I think Dal Pos wins the medal by the length of the Flemington, but there's a blanket to be thrown over a handful of others, including my girl Maddy Collier, and McKinnon, Beeson, Barclay and the Fridge. I've also being impressed by Tompkins ('Riff represent!) all year too.
