Final rookie selection are in, but no KB

Bartlett was always a long shot. Pretty skinny, and it wasn't clear she had the sort of game that would stand up to greater pressure. Give her a full season in senior football, and if she keeps kicking goals, she will be a prospect in a year or 2.

Nice to see a better pay deal deal for all the girls
AFL Women’s players have won a big pay rise — most players being rewarded with a 23 per cent hike for season two of the competition. A two-year pay deal was struck ahead of AFLW01 but after players spent more than their contracted nine hours per week at clubs this season, the AFL has agreed to a new deal.
Tier 1 players have received an 17.6 per cent bump, from $17,000 to $20,000, tier 2 rises from $12,000 to $14,500 (up 20 per cent) while the base wage is now $10,500, up from $8500 (up 23 per cent).

2018 Preseason now up and running

The GIANTS’ AFLW pre-season got underway on Monday afternoon with the playing squad taking part in a training session at the WestConnex Centre. Under the watchful eye of new Head Coach Alan McConnell the GIANTS completed a 2km time trail, skills session and gym session as preparations for the 2018 NAB AFLW competition clicked into gear. Midfielder Phoebe Monahan, the GIANTS’ fourth pick in last month’s NAB AFLW Draft, made a solid first impression, finishing first in the 2km time trial pipping last year’s fastest finisher Nicola Barr. New recruits Melissa Freckleton and Maddie Boyd finished equal third while inaugural GIANT Rebecca Beeson finished closely behind, rounding out the top five. McConnell said he was pleased by the training standard that the group brought with them to day one. “It’s quite overwhelming really the energy that they bring and the excitement that they have, but we’ll see what they’re like in February or March,” he said with a laugh.

Female Footy Leads the Way

The GIANTS' banner at the final game of their history-making inaugural AFL Women's season.

Our growth in Club football is the highest of any state in Australia driven by skyrocketing participation in our youth girls and female competitions.
AFL NSW/ACT CEO Sam Graham
Women’s footy leads the way as female participation increases by 78 per cent in NSW and the ACT off the back of the GIANTS’ involvement in the inaugural AFL Women’s season.

The GIANTS are the only elite female team in the state and territory and while overall participation grew 8.2 per cent, it was the female space that saw the biggest increase.

30 new teams competed in the first under-12s competition for girls in 2017 and it set to be followed up by another new under-10s competition next year, off the back of the success of the first AFLW season.

In 2017, the total number of female participation across all levels of Australian Football increased by 22 per cent to 463,364. Female participation now reflects 30 per cent of all participation and has seen 1,690 female teams created in 2017, an increase of 76 per cent from 2016.

AFL just have to be patient and not listen to the VFLers down south or dickheads like Masters and his SMH brethren.

Pretty sure they are smart enough, the TV revenue forces even the dumb ones to be

It will also be pushed along by other things happening in popular culture. For boys there has always been book series like Specky McGee and Fox Swift and even a series about the Selwood boys. Well, now there’s a new series for young readers called “Play Like a Girl” about a girls team called the Flyers, and it’s even got AFLW branding.

That's great.

To be honest I was never understanding of the missing element of Women's sport. Until I had a daughter. Having the Women's team as well as the Netball team is great for the women and girls of our region, hell even all of Sydney since the Swans couldn't be bothered ;)

FYI Where's the Giants branded one? ;)
