'Leftovers".....those not wanted or needed or not good enough.
In a little more detail the clubs have had 4-5 years to pick the best of Sydney and northern NSW youngsters and sign them to scholarships that give that club first go at them when they get to draft age. Not sure on numbers but I would think this is applicable to about 60 boys over that time frame. GWS has incorporated 30 into their squad but can only take them if the other club does not want them. So in theory the leftovers are the remainder of the boys that have not been cherry picked by other clubs.
Pretty unflattering description by Sheeds given that a number of them play for GWS and he is the Senior coach of that Club and others might hope to be selected by them. Lets assume he used an unfortunate term rather than gave a description of his thoughts about those not scholarshipped.
OK, so BNW and I agree with Sheeds that the GWS model is flawed.
TC and G&F maintain that the Scholarship system must be maintained and honoured.
TC further argues for a mature age recruitment so team is competitive in first years.
One thing for certain, Jamie Vlatko has to be part of that first team. Are his brothers likely as well? Any other secondstringers who have 'drifted' into the SAFL this year - high Sydney cost of living and all?
