Yeah ive been reading a bit about this on some random forums.

Lets pose a situation...

GWS decide none of the offers are enough to give any of these picks away. They are entitled to trade 4 of these picks over 2 years. So they decide to keep all four for next year (not smart in my opinion).

Does that mean O'Meara and Crouch end up in next year's national draft? as they would no longer be a part of the 17 yr old age bracket? Because that means by saying no this year, GWS have a very high probability of landing either in next years regular draft.

Or are those nominated players still the same selection for next year?

Gold Coast have got pick 1 - traded pick 4 ND and Ablett compo pick for pick MD pick 1 and pick 31 ND.

The age is reporting crows to get pick 2 with Davis compo and pick 10. Bold move there from them which we won't compete with.

As we know ourselves, finishing lower on the ladder has its advantages: in this case, their pick 10 vs our pick 12.

Still, not sure how we missed out here if Adelaide wanted pick 14 in return, and we were only asking for a pick inside the top 25. But perhaps that was for O'Meara, but we only offered the two picks for Crouch.

We shall never know - as with all these deals, there has to be a cut-off point where it stops being worthwhile. And not to forget, we still hold 3 first round picks for next year, and there's nothing to say that there won't be other players available of the Crouch/O'Meara quality available to us.

GC can afford to do it, pick 4 & a good 1st round pick upgrade is probably what O'Meara is worth, but I'm glad we didn't throw the farm & we don't have the multitude of picks GC have up their sleeve to offer

Hmm, Adelaide giving up 2 first rounders? I dunno. If Crouch (assuming they take him) is a top 5 pick next year, it's a risk but worth it. If he's only a top 10 pick then it's overs. EDIT: just read that they're getting something back & it's only a pick & a downgrade like GC, much more reasonable price

GC are the winners by a long way in this situation though

The thing that frustrates me most about all this mess, is that Harrington came out and specifically said we are solely focusing on the mini draft and securing one of the picks. So how much time have we wasted on this just to be trumped? If we really wanted Crouch or O'Meara we should have bit the bullet and offered both our compo picks for Scully. I mean we give away a pick in next years so called 'super draft', but we still pick up Viney and a Crouch or O'Meara. There are no gurantees that we will pick up anywhere near as good a kid as Crouch in next years draft anyway.

And has anyone heard anything about the other couple of kids in this mini draft? Is it worth staying in the race for one of them? All I've heard is how good O'Meara and Crouch are. So outside of those two, is it actually worth still putting something to GWS or are we best to hold off using anything worthwhile 'til next year now?

Hmm, Adelaide giving up 2 first rounders? I dunno.

Also, if Adelaide finish lower than us on the ladder next year (likely?), then that compo pick will be correspondingly higher.

Seems like the only way we could have won this is by offering BOTH compo picks, and/or throwing in a player they wanted. Warnock obviously not in their sites - though no established player is it would seem, they just want kids, kids and more kids.

From the Age

The Demons offered their compensation pick for losing Scully, which can be used up until 2015, and is tied to the ladder position of Melbourne.

Melbourne also offered pick No.12 but wanted a draft selection inside the top 25 in return.

guys the way I read it is that we were offering that for pick 1 nd omeara, I wouldn't be surprised if we haven't even gone after crouch cos pretty sure adelaides compensation pick is end of first round so not as good as ours anyway.. seriously think we only wanted O'Meara

Will be interesting to see what 3 & 4 go for. Still handy to get one of the remaining two and put 12 months into a kid.

They don't have to trade all 4 pick this year. Not sure on the exact details, but there's never been talk of anyone other than really O'Meara or Crouch as it was unlikely GWS would trade more than 2 of the picks

Does anyone know how this works next year with the other Mini draft picks, is there a new bunch of 17 yo or do they come out of the same group? (O'Meara & Crouch & others make up a group of 26 nominated by the AFL clubs & then nominating themselves born between 01/01/1994 & 30/04/1994)

I'm still not convinced we want to USE all the compo picks, some could be traded for established players in positions we need to fill.

It starts again and becomes Picks 1 & 2 for players born between January-April 1995, aka those that are just a few months too young to be chosen in the 2012 draft.

I think we'll still fill those gaps through the draft BS, or trade for young (<22 year old) players.
