As I said in the other thread, can't see TDL, but wouldn't be unhappy if true. Not sure about Pearce, you'd think if Port are gonna lose Boak they'd be able to pay a premium to keep him. Reid is obviously a likely target, but I also would have thought he'd at least wait to see how the Cloke contract procedes. If Cloke leaves, Reid could get some massive coin from the Pies. Trent West seems likely.

Port won't lose Boak but may lose Pearce.

Will be a big loss, he has been getting back to his best.

PRIZED Geelong ruckman Trent West will re-sign with the Cats, putting to bed speculation he was headed to Greater Western Sydney.
The Herald Sun can reveal the premiership big man will put pen to paper on a new contract as early as next week.
The commitment, believed to keep West at the Cattery for at least another two years, is a significant coup for Geelong after conceding it was unlikely it would land Port Adelaide star Travis Boak this week.

Seems to be some noise that Nathan Foley is a target and he is yet to re-sign with Richmond. Have to think his latest season-ending injury may have put the brakes on that though.

g'day guys, have no idea where to put this so i settled on here.
even though players don't usually get traded under contract, it does happen sometimes.
So, with that in mind, could something like the following example happen, or are there some guidelines or rules i'm missing.

say brendon goddard (just an example) gets approached by GWS late this season, and they make an informal offer.
Could he then go to the saints and say i'm going up to GWS next year, but you have been really good to me, so i want to give something back, and sign a contract extension to force gws to trade st kilda some better compensation if they want goddard?
Basically a sign and trade nba/nfl style, can it happen?

There's nothing stopping them, but most clubs would just go "no thanks, my approach was based on not having to trade. I'm not going to give up picks for you. Stay at the Saints."

Sign and trade happens in NBA because there's a weird rule similar to the veterans rule where a player's current club can pay them more than a new club, so what happens is a player signs for their current club at an inflated contract and then gets traded to the new club who has to honour their inflated contract. The new club usually offers this because they get their man, the old club gets some draft picks/players, and the player gets more cash. Everyone wins. I've never heard of it happening in the NFL.

A more likely scenario would probably be that Goddard agrees to go to GWS as an uncontracted player, but only if GWS then trade something else to the Saints at significant overs. E.g. Goddard to GWS as an uncontracted player, and GWS trade their second rounder for the Saints' third and fifth rounder. So the Saints get a second rounder that is essentially a late first rounder, plus the compo picks which will be significant, and GWS downgrade their second rounder for a third and fifth. Seems like a great deal for all parties.

That's not win-win. GWS is getting screwed out having to give up a second rounder for someone they could otherwise sign for free, so they're very much a loser in that scenario.

No, because the idea is that Goddard says its that or nothing. You think GWS would shy away from drafting Goddard over a downgrade of a second round pick?

It's still not win-win. That's holding GWS to ransom, and that's all well and good, but you can't say it's win-win if one party is coming off worse than they would in a more straightforward scenario.

lol. only one decision for goddard to make and thats do i stay at the saints or do i go elsewhere. why would he concern himself with anything else? thats none of a players business. is it for him to say hey man the afl isnt really handing a fair deal in compo picks so gws why dont you help them out? of course not. he will either go or stay, none of this other bullshit.

It's another flog who doesnt understand the importance of cap space in an era of free agency.

GWS have lots and lots and lots of good kids who deserve pay rises. If Goddard wants the $750k a year he deserves, then we lose two of those kids.

Sorry, what? When did I ever say GWS were going to actually chase after Goddard? It's just a hypothetical demonstrating how a player could work to get a better result for their past club when going to GWS. It could apply to anybody, Goddard was just the example used.
