Ruckman Keiren Briggs stood tall in the Giants’ 46-point win against Coburg on Saturday, gathering 27 hitouts, 24 disposals and a massive 16 clearances.

Xavier O’Halloran was also big around stoppages with 10 clearances among his 22 disposals.

Josh Fahey continued his impressive early-season form, following a 42-disposal outing last week with another match-high effort of 33 against the Lions to keep his name in the selectors’ minds for an AFL debut. [NOTE: Match Centre says 37 disposals]

Wade Derkson dominated up forward with five goals, while fellow rookies Jason Gilbee (21 touches) and James Peatling (16) kicked one goal each.

Max Gruzewski followed his mini-bag of four last round with two on Saturday, but was relatively quiet.

Callum Brown took 11 marks to go with 23 disposals, Cameron Fleeton had 16 touches and a goal, and Ryan Angwin got the ball 14 times.

Possessions were harder to come by down back, with veteran duo Lachie Keeffe (10 disposals) and Phil Davis (five) not seeing so much of the ball.

Davis went off injured in the first half and didn’t return and peatling went off at 3/4 time but the commentators thought it was not injury related.

I admit to having a 'non-expert eye', but Fahey not only got a lot of the ball (as per stats) but he also seemed to inevitably do something useful with it; there just didn't seem to be the occasional clangers that others had. Many Giant players got possessions, but as you might expect at VFL level, there was always the odd mistake amongst them. Not so with Fahey.

Also noted that Derksen appeared to be the cut-out for when Briggs was having a rest (rather than O'Keffe) and this made his efforts when up forward all the more commendable as he consequently had less time there than you might have assumed.

Agree on Derkson. Looks to be coming along nicely. Puts even more pressure on Riccardi and HH who have been that backup ruck. Cadman won’t be backup ruck when he plays and neither will Hogan.

Derksen Stars as GIANTS Defeat Coburg in VFL

Wade Derksen starred for the GIANTS as they recorded a 46-point win over Coburg in the VFL.

A five-goal haul from Wade Derksen has lifted the GIANTS to their second consecutive win of the VFL season, defeating Coburg by 46 points at Piranha Park. Derksen was the stand-out performer for the GIANTS, who held on against a spirited Coburg side to claim a 9.13 (67) to 17.11 (113) win.

James Peatling responded well after being omitted from the senior side, registering 16 disposals and a goal, with Kieren Briggs (27 hit-outs, 24 disposals and 16 clearances) also pushing for senior selection after yet another strong display in the ruck.

Josh Fahey (33 disposals, 8 marks) continued his impressive early-season form, with Xavier O’Halloran also stood tall in his return from injury, collecting 22 disposals, 10 clearances and a goal to re-stake his claim for a spot in the GIANTS’ AFL midfield.

Kieren Briggs
24 disposals, 27 hit-outs

Another super game in the ruck. His willingness to compete on the ground and in the air was excellent. He showed his craft and his experience at the stoppages, was really composed with the ball in hand, and it was another really consistent performance from him.

Xavier O’Halloran
22 disposals, 1 goal

It was good to have him back. His experience was invaluable, and he got our offense going through the midfield.

Josh Fahey
33 disposals, 8 marks

We all saw what he’s capable of with the ball in hand. He made great decisions with the ball in hand and gives us great drive out of the back half.

Max Gruzewski
2 goals, 3 marks

It was a tough day for him, but he competed hard and found himself outnumbered a lot. He brought the ball to ground and got rewarded for his efforts by hitting the scoreboard.

Wade Derksen
5 goals, 14 disposals

Wade showed his athleticism. He was great in the air and gave us a different look in the ruck. He’s developing into a really dynamic player for us and it was great to see him rewarded on the scoreboard.

Callum Brown
23 disposals, 11 marks

His impacted in the air was fantastic and he gave us great drive out of the back half when he had the ball. His intercept marking was fantastic and he’s starting to read the play really well.

Problems in the AFL team? Have these guys had to drive down to Canberra today ( or fly if a flight was available, which I am guessing is the case).

4 emergencies were
Callum Brown, Jake Riccardi, Ryan Angwin, Adam Kennedy
Brown and Riccardi playing so I thought the other 2 were the travelling emergencies for the game
Not sure how Briggs could come into the team but it is possible (I think, someone did it a few seasons ago not for the Giants) but he may have a niggle and could be an option for next week
Stone could be another with a injury
Midfield in the VFL doesn't have any listed players I think

Lions Take Down GIANTS in VFL

The Brisbane Lions remain undefeated in the VFL after recording an 83-point win over the GIANTS.

The write-up on Wade Derksen playing as ruck is interesting, Think of how Melbourne have played Luke Jackson - but Derksen would be a much better forward when resting!

Callum Brown gets a good write-up - could there be a spot for him next weekend?

AFL Listed Players:

Toby Bedford - 12 disposals, 1 goal

It was great to have him back, he brought a lot of energy all afternoon. You could see his work rate from contest to contest and his craft around goal stood out. I think he’s now ready for AFL level.

Leek Aleer

It was disappointing to see Leek go down with injury again. I thought up against some great key forwards he looked like the Leek we all know in that first quarter and hopefully it’s a speedy recovery for him.

Jake Riccardi - 4 goals, 19 disposals, 13 marks

It was great to see Jake come back and provide us with a contest forward of the ball. He looked really dangerous up the ground when he was in the ruck.

Cameron Fleeton - 23 disposals, 8 marks

Had another typical ‘Cameron Fleeton’ game where he defended really well. His execution by foot was great and it’s starting to become a big asset for us moving the ball forward.

Max Gruzewski - 6 disposals, 2 goals

He competed really hard and brought the ball to ground. He took a couple of nice marks, and he continues to improve each week from a forward craft point of view and understanding what his role is - when he needs to mark and when he just needs to make a contest.

Jason Gillbee - 20 disposals, 3 marks

He came up against a really experienced midfield. I think he would’ve taken a lot from the afternoon in terms of positioning and running patterns but we’re happy with his work ethic and that’s all you can ask for.

Wade Derksen - 24 disposals, 4 marks

Wade had to play as our primary ruckman for the afternoon and he did a fantastic job against two rucks with a lot of experience in that position. He played almost like an extra midfielder for us with his versatility and work on the ground. We’re really happy with how he went.

Callum Brown - 20 disposals, 8 marks

I thought he was probably our best player. Defensively he was great one-on-one and got involved offensively with our ball movement.

Coaches Call Out: Harvey Thomas

A 17-year-old product from our GIANTS Academy program. He came in and played across half-forward, he took a really good mark and kicked a nice goal. I think he's going to be a really promising player for the GIANTS moving forward.

Do they have no part in Kingsley’s 3 year plan? Keefe’s contract expires this year so probably won’t be renewed, but the other two are with us beyond this year. Are they carrying niggling injuries?

Unlikely that is the reason they aren't playing 2's (although could be true that they aren't in his plans). Perhaps on standby or more simply carrying a niggle of sorts
