I can't see it. Where is the improvement going to come from?

Hopper, Taranto and setterfield still have significant upside but you can't expect any of their other young guns to get much better. And they're looking like losing Devon smith and Matt Kennedy this trade period.

Plus mummy and shaw have hit the wall. So I wouldn't be counting on Deledio or griffen offering much either after having lengthy injuries
:cool:So we're gonna lose Devon Smith and Matt Kennedy because you know the dog groomer of someone who had casual sex with Leons neigbour once?

SJ out is a big one for them. He pulled a game from nowhere last week. But he got every last drop out of his career.
Couldn't provide the pressure and pace required. Cameron in for him is a massive improvement.

Taranto and Hopper have come on at a rate of knots this year. Hoppers ability to step up when Shiel went down and Taranto to miss a chunk of this year and then come back into the finals and play good games is a great positive for them.

Setterfield is a good prospect. I was hoping he'd leave GWS and come to Essendon. But they have a culture up there that gets buy in. Can't help but respect that.

Once Shaw is done, there is Isaac Cumming. He's a good one.
Lobb and Flynn will carry the load post-Mumford, and if I'm honest when Cameron is back, they should play one of Lobb or Mumford.
Cameron @ CHF, Patton @ FF, Himmelberg as 3rd tall. Pick their ruck based on the game and form.

Smith and Kennedy didn't play towards the end of the season and they still made a prelim.
Griffen and Deledio would barely feature next year unless they can get fully fit.

Shaw Corr Tomlinson
Wilson Davis Williams
Kelly Shiel Scully
Greene Cameron Taranto
De Boer Patton Himmelberg
Lobb Hopper Ward

thats a starting 18 only adelaide could compete for quality against.
And only Shaw is approaching retirement

I hate having to resort to the excuse card especially if it's regarding injuries but it's warranted in their case to be fair. They could of won it all this year if it wasn't for some wrong decisions and loss of players when the season mattered. Shiel playing 4 quarters alone probably would of been enough to beat Richmond although last night was the best example of why that team misses A.Kennedy (Who no one talks about or probably knows his value to their back-line) - Cameron's absence for too long ****s up their structure down the line and that impact is even deepened when they don't have Mumford as the Number 1 Ruck.

They really need to reconsider their entire leadership group too and appoint a new captain next year. You can't let phony leaders be directing and taking charge on-field like Davis, Ward and Shaw. Force people like Cameron, Greene, Haynes and Kelly to lift in other aspects and that team will already fix one of their few problems.

Honestly don't see any problem with them making Ward the sole captain from next year onwards TBH.

Strange you show real insight with Kenners, who defines our club in terms of values. Few oppo supporters know that as you said.
But then you compleyely miss the fact that Ward stands up and leads by example whenever we're in trouble. Our leadership group will evolve but Ward and Davis will temain co-captains.

I think Ward is a good leader. Davis seems ok too.
Greene cops it, but he really straightened his game out and showed a lot of maturity after his last run in. Ignored opposition trying to rile him up and played good footy. Hats off to the kid for letting his actions speak volumes.
Shaw is far too flakey to be a leader though.

Ward as captain
Davis as VC

works for now.
They've made two prelims in a row.
its not a complete disaster.
GCS are a good example of what they could be looking like right now.

I think Ward and I think of a very good player - but not a demanding type person. He doesn't strike me to have that sort of mentality and you can see it through his playing and body language. Not sure if that could be the result of the co-captaincy thing limiting his experience / capabilities in that regard. I feel like if he was just the only captain he would be a different and potentially much better player by now.

You really think you should still have co-captains going into next year and one should be Davis? What changes would you make to your leadership group also going into next year?

Didn't Shaw retire after he caused the first 3 goals on the weekend!

He's an unusual player these days, a deep defender without the ability to defend. Really relies on getting a dud to play on so he can impact the other way.

They do remind me of early 00's Port Adelaide who would dominate the regular season and fall short in September. Wouldn't at all surprise me if they came out firing next year.

But they won't win anything if they think individual recruits can patch team wide holes.

2, 3 or 4 Matt De Boer's won't cover the lack of forward pressure unless Cameron, Patton, Greene etc decide to do it themselves. Same with the flakier mids and the defenders who don't want to defend (see Wilson, N - if he's still there), although Adam Kennedy is badly missed and Buntine is a nice player who has something to offer down back as well.

That said they sure do need a pressure small forward. It's a position where they just have nothing.

The reality is very few teams can run with Shiel, Coniglio, Ward, Hopper, Kelly, Whitfield, Scully, Williams so it's hard to see them falling too far unless a lot of teams have a Richmond style transformation and get super fit and healthy.

They have an issue with veteran players that are all still under contract next season, and who have big question marks on durability/starting to decline after great careers - Mumford, Griffen, Deledio, Shaw. What is coming through the ranks to replace this crop? Does the coaching staff have the courage to freshen up the team at the expense of these players?

They also need more blue collar grit/role players on their list. Players like De Boer and Sam Reid, who will die for the team, is exactly what is lacking. There is more than enough pure talent already on the list.

and maybe even a third straight IF they can keep a healthy list. They effectively had Shiel, Cameron, who's one of the best forwards in the game and Mumford out. They took it to the much fancied Tige's on their home floor for two and a half quarters. Now with two prelim finals under their belt, they have that big game experience. that is needed for future battles.

Next season they'll be cherry ripe. They'll be more mature, more battle hardened.

There's no stopping them now. The juggernaut will be unleashed in 2018 and in all likelihood they'll 3peat.
Whilst Leon Cameron is their coach, GWS will not win a flag.

No matter who is fit, or not.
