Saw this...he's not serious is he? There's an ashes series on the line, now is not the time to give people chances to redeem themselves. How about not stuffing up in the first place?
YEs, way too many people reporting it now from all parts of the media. With ABC & Channel 9 both reporting it, given their connections to CA, the decision has clearly been made.

Pretty sure I covered this last week. Healy is a sour old goat who's head is so far up his own ass he can't tell north from south.

Well, CA saw a chance and took it and it will work out better for the team.

Bit nasty for the other players though. They'll all be looking over their shoulders when it comes to paternity leave or whatever else they need breaks for.

I disagree. They only need to look over their shoulders if they aren't better than the possible replacements - and if they aren't, they shouldn't feel they have any entitlement to their spot.

I doubt it. Even Blind Freddy could see that Haddin was in poor form in the lead up to the Ashes.

CA most likely waiting and looking for the perfect opportunity to make the snip and it presented itself without fail in a very timely manner. His first test was putrid and he was solely responsible for ****ing up the first innings.

It's better for the team that players have some sort of fear about their positions. Too comfortable and they play with complacency. At least the threat of being canned should instill consistent, or at least, desperate performances.

Thanks to Haddin for his career but it's time and this is the right call. Nevill is a quality Cricketer. I think if there are changes due to form then Sean Marsh has to be very close. I think Voges needs runs. Clarke is out of form as well but has performed really well as captain and with a record like his you feel that a big knock is just around the corner.

Have you seen Clarke bat recently?

Watch his back when he bats and how it effects how he is moving.

He's not out of form

This is the right call, I have nothing against Brad Haddin as he played an important role in the last ashes series and various other tests throughout his career, but he has never been a brilliant keeper or batsman and it's simply time to move on.

If they were droids and not human beings, yes that would make a lot of sense.

I think it's right that Nevill is playing, I just think the selectors could have taken this decision sooner and should have.

I understand where he is coming from, and even though I think Nevill is 100% the better keeper and Haddin should have been dropped for Lord's I am very torn on this decision.

Regardless of Haddin's ability or form, or how he compares to Nevill, it's a pretty rough call for a guy to effectively have his career ended because he missed a match for family reasons. I don't think a player should have to fear for his professional future at a time he should be worrying about his kid lying in hospital. This has kind of set a precedent which will unfortunately loom over every other guy in the squad any time a birth, illness, death in their family comes up. To me, that's not a very healthy team environment.

I think the only way this decision could be made sort of right would be if the selectors came out and said that Haddin was going to be dropped for Lord's anyway. That would remove his daughter's illness as a factor in him losing his spot.

Nevill is officially playing in the third test
And there was much rejoicing.

I understand the sympathy for Haddin, and I agree the call is a little harsh. From the little I've met of Haddin, he seems like a very down to Earth bloke and obviously very family orientated. This is the type of person you would love to see succeed and would live to see given a second chance but life is unfortunately not that fair. Imo, the call is perhaps a little unfair on Haddin but fair from a selection PoV.

Perhaps he would have been dropped for Lords, perhaps he would not have been dropped. We will never know. An opportunity rose for Peter Nevill and he took it with both gloves as well as with the bat and it's hard to drop a guy (part of a winning team I might add) after a debut like that when you compare it to Haddins form of late.

If it were the like of Steve Smith instead of Haddin, of course he would walk straight back into the team. But that would be because of his form leading up to when he left the team; not for any other reason and that's how the matter should be viewed. Nevill has now surpassed Haddin as a wicketkeeper batsmen. We didn't know that before and had Haddin played at Lords we still will may not have known, but we now do and must adjust accordingly. Ashes series and international cricket is brutal from a selection PoV, but I believe Australia's success has a lot to do with how we've been able to make harsh calls for the betterment of the team. It is a team game after all.

I'm quite sure reasons would have been made clear to Haddin as to why the decisions were made. He seems to have no qualms about it from what I can see, and was still all smiles at the tour match, being the great team player and man he is.

My point is that it's not really about whether he should get a second chance. It's more about whether he's had that chance taken away from him specifically because his daughter was sick.

I think he should have been dropped after Cardiff (if not before), but if they weren't going to drop him then it's a pretty dick move to drop him now. Cricketers, like any other employee, should be able to take a reasonable amount of compassionate leave from their jobs without having to fear for the impact on their career.
