Haddin's sucessor?

Who is it?

Who is the most likely player to be ready after this summer?? I reckon they will pick Paine.

Paine's almost a monty for the immediate sucessor.

Whiteman possibly to be his sucessor

Interestingly Chris Hartley is third for all-time Sheffield Shield dismissals with 413. At his current rate he will catch Darren Berry who has 546 to his name. Wade Seccombe is second with 488.

And the three of them will most likely end up with 0 Tests between them.

Yea Paine and Wade are the 2 options CA will be looking at. Really hope Paine has a good summer he was really looking good before his injury.

Paine has one first class century, made as an opener when not keeping, Wade has two Test Match Centuries, I may be wrong but it's not a close contest at this stage - Wade does need to improve his keeping - no doubt, but Haddin was brought back for reasons other than form.

But Wade only got in because Paine (the selctor's favourite) was injured. Personally reckon the order should be: Hartley, Wade, Paine. Given Hartley is frozen out the thing of interest is whether a still young Wade can improve his keeping sufficiently or just go back to batting. Similar to how even a young Smith and White both decided their bowling was irredeemable and went for batsmen roles.

I think a few posters are underestimating the importance of keeping wickets. Keepers set the tone in the field. When a keeper drops a catch, not only is the batsman given a second life, but the whole fielding effort drops down a cog. It's not only dropped catches either. It's getting up to the stumps quickly and taking the ball neatly. It all adds to the professionalism of the fielding side and tells opposition batsmen they aren't in for a picnic.

Maybe, but hardly anybody would pick Berry or Seccombe over Healy or Gilchrist.

I would argue to a point that both were better gloveman than the guys that played tests - but when it came to the total package - the batting was the killer and that is not for one minute to denigrate the keeping of either Healy (who was a high class keeper and Gilchrist who got better as he went along). The concept of picking a pure keeper has been passed over, unless they are virtually a standalone batsman in their own right - they have zero chance of playing for Australia.

You have literally just said exactly what I have been saying all along. Good to see someone else has my opinion.

Totally agree but it seems Paine may have the leaderships capabilities that the selectors could be after. Hopefully a better Keeper batsmen comes through very quickly so we don't need to pick Wade or Paine.

Hardly any posters underestimate the importance of keeping wickets, it's just that we all know how selection of keepers (batsmen with some capability with the gloves) works these days.

I'd suggest anyone advocating Wade for the test team is underestimating the importance of wicket keeping.

So me saying that Haddin was bought back for his leadership and Wade being picked because he is a batsmen more so then his keeping is different to what I have been saying how?

I can find one post of yours in this thread which is loosely similar to what you quoted above.

Western Royboy and others a talking about taking a total package approach, and for Wade to compensate for keeping deficiencies he is going to have to average 55+ with the bat.

Well maybe you should look again on the first page at my 2 posts.

These?
Wade. The only reason Wade was dropped was because the team needed more experience.

On the other hand Wade is a much better batsmen.
Hardly anyone is saying batting shouldn't come into it. It's just that to cover for Wade's shortcomings with the gloves he is going to have to start averaging 55+.

We have a winner ;)

At the end of the day it will depend on what the selectors value more as a keeper. Keeping ability or batting. Their is not that many keepers around who will be able to bat as well. Then add in Australia has almost no solid batting young(ish) batting depth then it would be a big risk to select a keeper who is no a good bat. Wade ticks more boxes for what Australia require currently (after Haddin of course).

Long term I hope Whiteman is the keeper. Very clean behind the stumps and a very good bat. I want Wade to keep this season so Handscomb doesn't then have him drop the gloves and recruit Pearson/Triffitt/Dunk as a keeper. In that order

What would people prefer a good keeper who averages 30 (e.g. Ludeman) or a keeper that drops the odd sitter and misses stumpings but averages 45??
Also, no to Travis Head, groom him for number 3-5 bat, keeping might hinder his progress
