I still think playing Hamish and Hale as ruckman resting in the goal square is our best option. Once Thommo is back and they start getting a lesser backman they would have to be a headache to the opposition coach.

I can see that as a premiership combination in years to come and we would have that to build around for the next ten years.

If Moran is like Goodes he wouldn't need to ruck. He would just be another headache for the opposition coach running around the ground.

I thought he was better than Hamish. He wasn't fantastic, but he did some important things, allowed Hamish to go forward to ice the game and meant Petrie could play in the back half where he is undoubtably best suited.

Something to work with, at any rate.

My two cents are that Hale is a vital cog to the team this year and moving forward.

He was always going to struggle early this year, with a position change. The coaching staff was forced to push their number 1 ruckmen to CHF in hope that he could cover an area that the club has refused to develop in the last couple of years. (As evident now that we have no young tall forward options and are playing drew down back to cover up)

I reckon they see that Hale is not a CHF and are looking at playing him in the ruck or closer to goal, were his not such a liability when the ball hits the ground.

I would like to see Hale start in the ruck this week and H to play more in the goal square. Not only will this help Hale regain form and confidence in might keep H a little fresher towards the end of the season especially leading in to the split round.

Refused to develop's a bit harsh. It's not exactly the easiest of spots to fill.

It is important we have 2 very good ruckmen at the club over the next 10 years, a strong McIntosh/Hale combo can give us a significant advantage. We would never get back more than what we have invested in Hale, an early first round pick plus years of development, would be utterly insane to trade him in his early 20s.

Good post.

McIntosh = McKernan
Hale = Capuano

ould keep both hale and moran. hale this yr has had injury and that stupid betting crap from the afl took a bit of a knock on hale, we will see him return to form. interesting call to see hale compared to capuano, has a better ability to drop back and take strong marks in defence rather than kicking goals, very matty capuanoish.

Mmmmmmm..... But I agree, Sunday was one of his better games. But don't be too critical of Hamish, big guys take time to come on???????

That they do. Hamish didn't look interested to me on Sunday. None of the hard running and desperation of the previous 10 weeks. To his credit though, stood up in the last quarter.

I have no concerns whatsoever of Hamish and I'm still very confident about Hale.

Yer was good, but would still like moran to come in if he is fit.

Great summary. We would want a first round pick to offset what his intial cost was, plus a return for the years we've developed him.

Ruckmen do fatigue, and don't very few tend to have injury free careers. I'd keep both Hale and McIntosh. Let's hope McIntosh keeps playing the way he is, but injury or poor form would leave us with only Moran and Goldstein if we got rid of Hale. Petrie can ruck, but prefer him in the backline.

I'd play Hale and McIntosh in every game. I agree that having one up forward can create temporary mismatches. However, the days of resting in the forward line for too long are over - the bench is for that.

I'm not convinced Moran will make it, and Goldstein will take years like all ruckmen.

with Hale there is no second or third efforts which is an absolute must.He deserves to stay in the team for the rest of this year because he has showed promise in the last few years but he needs those second and third efforts from him now or we should definately trade him and get someone who has the same potential but maybe in a different position such as Full Back which we desperately need NOW.

I'm not too sure that we need a full back at the moment. The way Spud has gone about his business, Gibson is one of the best one on one spoilers already and Drew is able to play on the monster guys as well.

With these three guys all having different strengths to one another it adds versatility to our defense.

What we really lack is tall forward options. We have Thommo and that's it. There is no one in the VFL who will be able to play in the next 1-2 years. Hansen looks promising but he is still 2-3 years away to having any kind of regular impact. (Eg: look at both Franklin and Roughhead).

However I'm not for trading Hale so all that stuff is kind of irrelevant!

Edwards is more a flanker leading up the ground, Shagger and Jones are midsized leading players as well, LT, Boomer and Campbell are crumbing players.

At times in the last couple of weeks he have bombed the ball long to Brown and that will kill us in the high pressure games were opposition sides will come charging out of defense.

I understand where your coming from and i agree a quality CHF would be great but with Thommo to play either CHF/FF next year and have CJ or Edwards playing CHF i think we can get away with it for a few years until hopefully Hansen or even Hughes come good in the next few years, but we definately need a FB.As good as Spud is i dont think hes a FB and he is needed in our midfield and on the HBF.

Not sure how Thommo will come back, big guy relies on acceleration to get a step on defenders, laterally and jumping ability may be affected fingers crossed that he comes back better than before.

I just worried that this team wont be able to take the next step in finals runs unless they find another tall forward who can take a grab when the team is under pressure and the delivery line in to the forward line is up and under'

So many of our goals are manufactured at ground level that at times when the tide is against us we struggle to kick a goal to stem the opposition.

Dont worry about Thommo. He will come back and be a quality forward for us next year.I also think that Edwards will be better again next year for what he has experienced this year.Throw in Hughes and maybe a young and promising tall in the draft or even a ready made tall like Hansen(eg. only) from the Eagles and we will kick enough goals.

I agree with that in general, but disagree last week. I've seen Hale play as well as he did against St.Kilda before but never as hard. He was doing the hard things (ie - shepherding, running to provide a target, and tackling.) In fact he wasn't just tackling but laying tackles and throwing them to the ground, something that was a make up of the Roos of the 90's. Whether he keeps it up is another issue and whether he's doing those things because of the improvement in McIntosh and the fact that Moran is breathing down his neck is debatable but I'd stake my life on it. The thing is, he needs to maintain that intensity. If he did, he wouldn't be going anywhere and we'd be beating clubs off with a stick for his services.

Spurs, im not really worried about Thommo just a little concrened, some players just never really come good after a knee(Horse is perfect example, just wasn't able to turn after the knee).

I agree if Edwards had a big goal kicker behind him could be very, very dangerous as a lead up player.:thumbsu:

Just watching the Bulldogs this year and last years finals and teams are able to stop thier run which hurts the delivery into the forward line, thats when you need a big body to take contested marks.(I think that this may hurt us closer to the end of the year).

Except last week when McIntosh went to the forward line. And thats the beauty of Hale and/or Moran in the side. We can keep Petrie in defence and allow Hale to go into the ruck. He only needs to provide a contest and he'll be doing his job. When McIntosh went to the forward line there was no way St.Kilda were going to win because we were creating enough chances without him. But even if he doesn't take the speccies like he did in the last quarter he'll at least provide a stop play for the smaller forwards. This is why Hale has to stay. OR, Moran has to take his spot from him.

Couldn't agree with you more Mark, I stated early that H should start in the goal square at times. When Hale is fit and in form he is more than capable in the ruck.

Lets just hope that if we make the finals, Leigh Brown will be due for his 'once in a blue moon' good game:rolleyes:

Spot on. Hale played some very hard football on Sunday. Had at least three crunching tackles. From the time he came on he just looked right into it. Maybe that is because of pressure, maybe it is because he had his confidence back after a reportedly good game in the twos - but whatever it is, if he continues to work that hard it will all come together for him and he will be very valuable.

Are you as confident in Hale as you have been in McConnell being the find of 2007?

He was tackling and throwing them to the ground but thats what he is supposed to do isnt it? I cant see the 2nd and 3rd efforts and we need that from him.Big Mac has been doing that all year.

post of the year!

we must draft some tall forwards... possibly even a mature age recruit... possibly even try and trade player/s for a young tall from another club
