Half-Back Line

Great topic and it's definitely an area where we're absolutely struggling. Most of our back six are solid defenders in terms of stopping their men but in terms of setting up attacks, are so sloppy by foot.

Blease has been playing as a half-back in the VFL and has produced a consistent month or so. Maybe it's time to bite the bullet and see if he can translate that into AFL.

Also should be an area for our recruiting team to look at for the off-season.

Even Garland has made a couple of disposal errors in recent weeks.

I've noticed he's not prepared to run with the ball as much as he did previously, and I wonder if it's a fitness issue or if it's been coached out of him a little bit under Roos.

Yep was thinking the same. We lack a couple of classy ball uesers in the back half. Roos seems intent on bringing in a couple of big bodied mids. If this happen perhaps Vince to half back. Hopwfully the likes of Toumpas and Barry can develop. Not much we can do this year unless we move someone like Watts down there. However I like him in the current role. I would like to see Grimes improve though he could be that player.

It does seem that we don't have players taking the game on in the back half as much this year. I would say it is from instruction.

If we had more midfielders, Vince would probably be our best option as that attacking/running half back that you always try to play through.

He's got the kick, and is certainly reliable when its his turn to tackle or contest.

I'm just not sure our midfield could handle not having Vince in their without a few more quality players.

Depending on who is available at the trade table, I'm not against trading both our first round picks this year.

Garland really had no pre season so that might have something to do with it.

They've been playing Blease down back for Casey but a) Casey have been pox and b) last week's VFL report suggested it was because they trying to show him things for when he played forward. And rightly so too, I want him kicking rampant goals on the run but also not going missing for three quarters.

Bring back half-back Tapscott.

Zac Jones started his first senior games as the sub for Sydney on the weekend. Came on in the third quarter and replaced an injured Rhys Shaw at half back..

After finding his feet, he went on to win nine possessions and lay six tackles across half-back, showing poise when he had the ball and ferocity when it was in his vicinity.

He could be a nice tie-in to a deal with Sydney for one of their mids and our pick. Someone me may actually have a hope of convincing to come play for the Dees!

I want to see Tapscott at half back again too, but is he even playing that role at Casey? If not then I guess Roos hasn't earmarked him for it.

The problem of a lack of skill from half back is significant but is equally matched through the midfield. Basic skill errors are pretty rampant all over the ground, workrate has papered over this somewhat is being able to win back a turnover but when the effort is slightly off then we get torched. It becomes particularly obvious in games like the weekend when there is often a lack of clear leads presented that pinpoint passes become the norm and we simply aren't capable of consistently pulling that off. Players that have an innate drive to compete and can hit targets will be the number one priority over the next couple of off seasons, back, mid and forward.

So frustrating yesterday. We'd set up numbers at a contest on the HB/wing, win a clearance, do a few overlap handballs into space and then kick forward to.....three North defenders just waiting for it. Then their mids would run harder than ours into the open space on the other side of the ground, chip chip and then hit a leading forward.

We also really lack leg speed. We're one of the slowest teams in the competition and have a lot of plod in the midfield.

Mitch Golby.

Just randomly throwing up a name here, and I don't know much about him as a player, but he seems to be down on previous output this year. Not sure if he's injured or something, or indeed if he fits the bill of good kicking/decision making skills, but could be worth a look.

I used to play against him, I still cant fathom how he plays AFL, Jarryd Blair was 5x the player in junior footy

Liam Duggan could be an option for us at the draft.

Fast, physical half back flanker with good decision making and kicking. Can also play well on the ball.

The club has already been in talks with Liam. We are very keen.

Took the words out of my mouth re: Vince. Once we have a few more players capable of holding there own through the middle, I'd like to see Vince "retire" to the HBF.

Yes, just for the "Golby Pls" graphics.

I doubt the Swans would give him up given that Shaw and Malceski are both getting on and will need replacing soon.

You would presume not - and Im really mainly showing interest with because of the Jones connection.

But dont underestimate the value of pick 4 or 5 for a side like Sydney that probably wouldnt mind starting to use the draft a little more, now that the COLA is going to be phased out and it wont be as easy for them to just prize players away from other clubs with extra $$

CAN YOU name the small defender who has curtailed Brandon Matera, Eddie Betts, Luke Dahlhaus, Chad Wingard and Jamie Elliott in the space of seven weeks?
The answer is Melbourne's Neville Jetta.

Since coming into the side in round five, after being elevated off the rookie list for the injured Jack Trengove, Jetta's impact has been substantial.
Champion Data has credited Jetta with conceding just four goals against his direct opponents in 518 minutes of playing time over that seven-week block.

Congratulations Nev (Y)

Yeah good article, he's clearly done plenty of extra work this year.

Problem was that I saw that article Sunday morning, and when Nahas started the game on fire I thought Jetta had copped the dreaded MFC Media Attention Curse. Luckily he turned it around and had another solid game.

I thought Nahas got him on the lead a few times early, so he smashed his shoulder in to curtail him

Great effort by him though wonder who else we can delist this year and turn into AFL players
