If we played and beat the Tigers next week, the goalposts would be moved and we'd still have not beat a contender - no different to the Saints.
Until we beat Melbourne, Geelong, Freo and whoever is in the top 4 at the time, every single week, we have not beaten a contender!!

If we beat Melbourne next week does that count or do we exclude it because they're in a form slump? :S

Clearly they’re in a form slump. So whilst a win at the G will be a good thing, it
would not be a silver bullet based on their current form.

I'm not one of these bravura supporters who think we're headed for amazing achievements. Nor am I a doubter.

We're clearly a good side that has so far won 1 out of 6 finals we've contended in. To be blunt we've proven nothing as far as being a consistent winner of big games and a premiership side.

I don't know why some people keep on with this idea that our lineup is so amazing. Wait until we've achieved a few finals wins and then the proof will be in the pudding. Until then I hope we can do that. If not I'm happy that we can at least play good consistent footy and win the majority of our games.

With Melbourne falling off the perch a little if they don't get their form back this year is wide open.

So if we get through with our current lineup more or less intact we'll find out how good we are. Our key players are mostly at the age where they become all time greats if they're good enough.

Why thank you Nunez. In all seriousness, we’ve proven nothing other then we aren’t capable when it matters. 1 finals win from 6, on top of that we have regularly lost major tests during the home and away season. We haven’t won at the G since 2014. We lose regularly bw it home and away or finals when the big boys come to play.

I think if we beat Melbourne, even without Gawn and maybe May, I will feel satisfied that we can get the job done and go all the way.

Those big bodied midfielders of Oliver / Petracca are the keys to beating our midfield, so if we can pass that test and win the midfield battle next week, I will feel confident we can go all the way.

"We've proven nothing other than we aren't capable when it matters"

2019 and 2020 our team was still young and overperformed. 2021 was - in my opinion - our first contending year (backed up by it being the first year bookies had us as flag favourites at a point). Injuries curtailed that opportunity and even then we were a kick away from likely making the GF.

This year we've won all bar 3 games and the games we've lost could have gone either way. Other contenders in Melbourne and Fremantle are in the same boat, and you know what? It doesn't matter. What matters is we prove it in the finals. If we have the majority of our best 22 in this year, I am confident we will.

"We haven't won at the G since 2014"

We haven't played at the G since round 1 of 2020 - during the game we found out the season was being postponed (you'd be absolutely kidding yourself if you think the players weren't aware of this). We have not had the opportunity to play at the G during our peak performing seasons so that statement is completely misleading.

"We lose regularly bw it home and away or finals when the big boys come to play."

lol, no. We have the best win/loss record of any team the past few years and in that time have beaten all premiers and runner ups, including Richmond in a final.

Try and enjoy the ride mate, pessimism must be so depressing.

I agree with the sentiment, but by the same token that's why I'm pretty sanguine about regular season losses. As long as we maintain top 4 and ideally top 2, we've done the job needed in the regular season. But we need to be able to turn it on come finals, ideally starting in the last few weeks - and I'd much rather we build to it rather than go nuts trying to put a gap between us and the rest which proves meaningless the moment finals start.

I don’t think any supporters doubt we’re contenders but we’ve been contenders for a few years now and shouldn’t be satisfied with that.

The Roar Deal covered it well. We have nothing left to accomplish in the home and away season and most fans want to see signs we can take the next step in finals. Which I don’t think we’ve seen yet. Probably the opposite and we’ll struggle if we have to play a top 4 team away from home
Disagree. It's extremely rare to come from 3rd last in 2018 to be contenders like you say in 2019 ("for a few years now") When we started our rapid climb up the ladder in 2019, more than 1/2 the side were kids who had raw talent but nowhere near the amount of experience to win a flag. There is only 1 winner in a grand final out of 18 teams...to win one you need more than raw talent. In 99% of cases, it's year after year of blood, sweat & tears from trying.
I listened to The roar Deal once and won't listen to it again as I don't find it one bit interesting. Suffice to say, if being on top of the ladder after round 14 in any season doesn't give you signs we are capable of winning this years flag, then i dont understand your thinking.....thats ok but.

TRD is a good listen. Would recommend giving it a second shot.

I think we are close to having an amazing list.
We are short 1 classy ball using running defender and a strong body mid that has some pace and can also use the ball well.

Who has said this?
I thought that was you . And the other guy. And a couple of others. Maybe I imagined it.

Having said that it is possible our lineup is amazing . I don't know . I'm really happy with our W/L ratio the last 3 years and almost invariably with the way the guys play.

Whether we're good enough to consistently win finals we should know more this year. I don't see why not but until we do that's the question mark.

And a ruckman ? In a perfect world.

Our list is about as could as it could be. Sometimes I wonder whether we overrate some of our players . Usually after they haven't played so well.

Never have I said our line up is amazing. If you think I said that you are imagining it. (No offence)

What I have said is our forward line is #1, our jewel in the crown, unique, & nightmare for opposition defenders.

I do believe our line up needs some tweaks & some improvement which I am kinda excited to say because I also believe we have a lot improvement left in us despite being on top of the ladder right now. Providing we have a full list that are all hitting the right form like Melbourne did last year, & we are going to be very hard to beat come finals.

It does but up against winning 1 of 6 finals including 5 at home and the other at a neutral venue while winning the most home and away games during that time you also question whether round 14 means much

If it all falls into place for us I agree. We'll be hard to beat.

You need the luck. Even if you are very good.

Sometimes when you follow your side super closely the one thing you sometimes lose sight of is how good the others are. There are probably 3 teams that are at our level. And others that could beat us on their day. But maybe we can get better.
