Loving how 1 or 2 players pushing the boundaries yesterday (Thompson, MAYBE Mcmahon if youre a softc***) is equal to the entire North team playing using underhanded tactics.
The other three blokes only came in when they saw one of their team mates in a headlock, we get bitched out for not flying the flag when boomer got smashed and now we're getting bitched out for doing just what the media called for?

In that case the Swans circa the Hall days must be the dirtiest team in history *rolls eyes*

In my opinion the worst thing Thompson did all day was the attempted head butt (which in itself was slow and hardly there), it missed and he saved himself weeks for it.

Interesting that everyone is referring to the 'niggling' as the cause of Hall's brain snap. There is one reason and one reason only EGO. There was no way in hell Hall was going to let someone treat him like a joke and he reacted in the only way he knew how.

It wasn't 2 quarters of niggling that did it, it was one moment of someone treating him like he isn't the biggest, baddest boy on the block.

I'm not surprised that I've seen some ridiculous comments on this thread defending Thompson and blaming Hall for "losing control", saying that niggling your opponent is part of the game. No you morons, the aim of the game is to score more points than the opposition. When you're getting flogged 7 goals to zero it's probably best to concentrate on playing football rather than being a tool and trying to annoy Hall for no purpose at all. If Hall's surname was Riewoldt he would have received a free kick instead (demonstrated yet again last night).

One thing that hasn't yet been brought up that continually puzzles me is the fact that niggling Barry until he 'snaps' seems to be a questionable tactic for the team doing it in terms of how much they benefit from it. This showed yesterday and a couple more times during the year (Dawson/St.Kilda in the NAB Cup Final springing to mind as another good example).

Logically you'd expect two possible things to come as a result of a Barry Hall Brain Snap:
-He gets suspended
-He gets put off his game

For the first point, clearly unless the team are playing the Bulldogs twice in a couple of weeks they have nothing to benefit from Barry Hall's suspension. In fact, they'll be handing that benefit to a number of other teams which, although impressively unselfish of them, is unlikely to be a decent motivator.

The second point is perhaps the more obvious one, and yet time and again this year we've seen Barry Hall, rather than be put off his game after a scuffle with a niggling defender, come out and play his best footy of the game.
Up to half time yesterday Barry Hall had kicked 1 goal and was fairly quiet despite being on the dominant side. Queue a beautifully baited brain snap that Big Footy's finest* trolls would be proud of and Barry proceeded to kick 2 goals 1 behind and hand off a goal assist the next quarter. Against Zac Dawson it was 4 goals in the first quarter if I remember right.
Given this, I've yet to see evidence this year that pissing Barry off actually does make him play worse.

... Which begs the question, why the hell would you do it?

*I use the term 'finest' in the most ironic sense possible

Reasonable post. As has been stated time and time again, Thompson does it week in and week out, and hes not the only annoying defender in the league, hes just THE most annoying.

Noones ever going to vote Thompson as the most skilled defender but he finds ways to overcome it by niggling his opponent and putting him off his game. Yeah its a relic of a by-gone era, but its how he is.
Hall is probably one you dont want to piss off though, he just gets better when he's annoyed, I would of preferred Grima on him but it wasnt to be.

Would of loved to see Thompson on Aker to be honest, Aker would of given as good as he got.

Thompson does it to EVERYONE.

It was not a pre-planned strategy to piss off Hall.

Surely then your coach would have known Thompson would be planning on doing it to Hall, and also known that the result would be Barry using the resulting aggression to play even better. Shouldn't Brad Scott then make the decision then to tell Thompson not to give Barry the ammunition? Or at the very least play a different defender on him as has been suggested.

The fact that North knew Thompson would be doing it to Barry, while it may be somewhat of a decent defense for the player himself, is rather damning for the club (coaches specifically).

i think you will find he will go, last weeks was no worse!

I can only think common opinion here is based on what people think of North.

Poor poor Barry Hall getting knocked over tieing his shoe lace by a young smaller player. What a coward Thompson.
Bwaahaha fools- Bazza is no Hird or Buckley he is a thug that busts jaws and punches unsuspecting players of the ball to unconciousness.
Fools the lot of you.
I thought Thompson had balls, because we all know who would win in a boxing match.

Admit it you'd love a Thompson in your defence.

No.

If Hall can't control himself, and the end result of some niggling is him losing his shit, he shouldnt be on the football field.

The end result is him getting into a wrestle and then playing his best quarter of footy of the game. I'll take that.

As my original post asked, I'm trying to figure out why any team would let their defenders niggle Barry (or in this specific case, play a 'serial-niggler' on him) when the benefits of doing so are non-existent for that team. Yet to see a good answer, which I suspect is because there is none.

So in other words your happy for Thompson to keep jabbing him in the ribs and back with his fist yet you expect Hall to just point to the scoreboard and do nothing. Sorry mate but i doubt youve played much footy in your life have you because you just have no idea

Yeah, physical violence was the only option.
I stand corrected.
