Thompson would be lucky to get a game in eras past. If he did, he'd spend a good amount of it concussed.

Lucky to get a game, yeah thats a relevant post.

Yes, they dished out some punishment in the black and white days didnt they, behind the play king hits, square ups. Bazza is definitely from an era long gone.

Legitimate bump, don't know what you're whinging about.

Agree with that, fair bump. The constant need to fix up "spontaneous" bleeding is what Eade was referring to.

Mick Martyn already disagrees with you.

If a Judd or Riewoldt had been subjected to the same treatment, they would have had multiple frees (and in Riewoldt's case, possibly a police escort by the end of the game!).

Umpires should simply exercise some consistency.

I seem to recall Riewoldt copping some attention from a group of lions players after he busted his collarbone at the gabba.

He should have been protected better I agree.

Bazza doing up his shoelaces, yep the umpire should have protected him better and stepped in and done them up for him.

This is probably the biggest issue. St Nick would have gotten multiple frees had he had to put with that kind of treatment, yet players like Hall & J. Brown are expected to cop it week in, week out. It's either a free kick for all, or a free kick for none.

As for the actual incident; both Hall & Thompson should be fined for wrestling, nothing more, nothing less. Rocket got it in 1 when he said the only reason the media were interested is because it was Barry Hall; if it had been Travis Cloke or Quentin Lynch, reckon there'd be any hysteria?

Do you mean the "spontaneous" bleeding that occurred when two of the Bulldogs players clashed heads. This incident was highlighted on the Sunday Footy Show to prove Eade was spin doctoring. I will use that term instead of lying because of the furore that occurred when Malthouse "spin doctored".

No I am referring to the half dozen times Gia was off the field for the blood rule.

Re: Scott Thompson, brave or stupid?

This for me.

If you can't retaliate, should you be able to niggle.

Fine them both for wrestling, but Thompson knew full well what would happen and got the result he wanted. Otherwise, get on with it, the players sorted it out themselves because the umpires couldn't.

If Hall had given Thompson back the same as he was getting, there's have been a fine for wrestling and that's it. His response was disproportionate and unnecessary. Nice PR by Eade and everyone to make it sound like he was put upon and more than entitled to go head high, Malthouse would be proud, but it doesn't make it so.

I'd also add that retaliation has not been a justification at the tribunal for some time. Ballplayers have been suspended for hitting back at taggers, and it's exactly the same situation - they get annoyed at the niggle and at the impact it has on their game, they hit back harder and/or higher out of frustration and they are the ones in trouble. Fair or not, they need to learn to cope with it and stay within the rules if they niggle back.

You idiot, Rocket was talking about after they had the head clash, the Nth players were targeting that spot on their head. - Cheap Shots

Bingo.

IIRC Daniel Southern's headlock on Sumich was punished by a fine, no weeks were given. Seems pretty fair to me.

It was a headlock, nothing more, he didn't hit him, he actually controlled himself. If he goes for a headlock then McMahon should also go for a headlock with his knees around Cooney's head.

Mitchell was fined $900 for a vicious hair pulling incident, a headlock is less painful.

Tony Lockett head lock was just a fine as well. See how it goes under the new system.

I suppose that's right, although I'm not sure Brown cops all that much as he isn't known to lose his shit, flip and start belting blokes.

Again, that might be so, but it is what it is because Barry has a history. Travis Cloke does not.

When Hall physically and emotionally crushed Zac Dawson in the NAB Cup GF, we all had a laugh. That's his go and that's fine. All part of the game. What you can't do is then spin around and have a whinge because the next bloke is not only not scared of you but baits you into a brain explosion. Doesn't work like that.

Can't believe this thread has gotten out to 50 pages. The football world has gotten VERY 'precious' in the last couple of years.

What I think is most disappointing about this whole saga though is not the media or the fans reactions, they are fairly predicatble (though over-hyped). It's the coaches who have really blown this up.

First, Eade wants to blab on for hours about how Barry needs to be 'protected'. Wake up Rodney! He is protected, if the Staker incident had of occurred off the football field he would have been charged with assult (and he still should of been IMO). If forwards in the modern game became any more "protected" then we may as well change the name of the game to Netball.

Then there was the W**NKER down at Carlton who decided to talk about how Thompson's actions were setting a bad example for the young kids. "I wouldn't like to to see my son doing it", he says. Would you rather your son emulate Barry Hall??

North lost by 70.

You're club won't win a flag during your life time.

That has about as much relevance to this thread as your post.

Bit like Mooney - a thug, is that what your saying.

What has that got to do with anything? And if you are placing the deeds that Hall has committed on field over the course of his career in the same boat as Mooney's (who yes, did countless dumb things) then you are disappointingly ignorant.

it takes 2 people to shake hands

You were obviously not watching when Scott Thompson went to Hall after the game to shake hands and Barry Hall ignored him.

dont forget your coach, bringing it up again today with a rather meaningless press release.

Round 18 - 1st August, Sunday 2.10PM Etihad.
The umpires will be on the look out so Thompson and North will have to be on subtle and cunning. I suggest Thompson and one to two others get Hall into a wrestle and one of them applies the hopoate technique! Then we will see if Hall can control himself.

As for Brad Scott.....??

Even to this day I still cannot believe that happened. You wouldn't think it would be that easy in the heat of play.

FWIW most callers on talkback radio were backing Barry, including some of the more elderly callers.

I would like to see the AFL come down hard on those players whose main focus on the field to to harrass another player into a reaction. They should get double the suspension of the player who has reacted. That should stop them.
