Halls Creek is a town of about 1500 people in the eastern Kimberley region of northern WA. It is one of the most remote towns in Australia, if not the world! Made up of majority Aboriginal people of Jaru, Kija, Kukatja, Walmajarri and Gooniyandi language groups. For most of these people, their first language is Kimberley Kriol. Australian English is usually their second language.

Quite soon, Halls Creek will have four players on AFL lists. Sam Petrevski-Seton of Carlton and Cedric Cox of Brisbane were recently joined by Shane McAdam of Adelaide, and young Irving Mosquito is a part of the Hawthorn Next-Gen Academy.

Four players from a town of 1500 people seems pretty remarkable to me, let alone one that is as remote as Halls Creek, and where the players will be coming to an AFL club and speaking in their second language!

I'm wondering, is this the most over-represented town in the AFL competition? What other small towns boast multiple players on an AFL list?

Very impressive! However, being only 50k's from a town of 40,000 people, Halls Creek certainly has Northampton covered for remoteness

Just celebrating the fact that so many current players have come out of one of the remotest towns in the world, speaking English as a second language and having to overcome many other hardships. In my opinion that makes it one of the most over-represented towns in our competition, if not number one.

Reckon the Tiwi Islands, specifically Melville Island (pop ~1000), have them covered in both respects. Produced the Riolis, Michael Long, McDonald-Tipungwuti, Wonaeamirri, and Ronnie Burns.

I remember reading somewhere that the small town of Heyfield, had 7 players in the VFL/AFL at the same time.

Not sure how true it is, haven't looked into it.

AFL players hail from the country in disproportionate numbers to the average population, for obvious reasons. And remote, often mostly indigenous communities. Not a whole lot to do out there and footy is a big part of life.

Halls creek is more of a catchment area, you have a lot of cattle stations around/Smaller communities ect. and Halls creek is the closest "town" its like saying guys who live an hour away would be halls creek locals. SPP is an example where he grew up between fitzroy crossing (poor lad) then his dad moved to a farm closer to halls creek before he started going to boarding school in perth

However, the North West is untapped in potential. Huge amounts of poverty depression ect. through regional northwest, so naturally until someone bites the bullet and treats these communities as humans football and basketball are a good escape

Also Halls Creek has a Clontarf academy up there.

Where theres a dedicated school/ footy academy giving kids education + footy can only be a benefit to the locals.

Also their ground was very well manicured when I was last up there.

We need social engineering to fix this, perhaps we should get recruiting staff to purposefully not draft more than one player every 5 years?

The indigenous community dumbs down geography a great deal when discussing it with whiteys like me.
"Ceduna" is the "place of residence" of many indigenous folk actually living in Central-Western Australia who fall within a catchment area from almost the NT border to well across the WA border and across the Nullaboor. People living up in Oak Valley (10 hours from Ceduna) say they "live in Ceduna" to make it simpler and avoid a BS convo.
I assume it's similar in Halls.

Yeah FASD (Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) is a pretty sizeable issue in the area, which causes all sorts of issues

When I was their last it had league 11 teams to a total catchment population of about 5.5 thousand.
There is one white peoples team who are more accountable but not as good to watch.
The rest are mainly black and their is no concept of defence everyone takes the game on and its just great also lots of speckies.

When I lived in Katherine the premiership largely depended on the arrival of the monsoon.

The town team was majority, but not exclusively white. They had perennially better key position players and structure and would win if the wet hadn't arrived.

If it had in the chaos and the mud the lighter framed talented indigenous players from the surrounding communities were unbeatable.
