You guys are a bit harsh on the boy. Horrid run with injuries, yes we all know that, but when he was on the park, he made his teammates walk taller. Should've continued on as Saints captain instead of being forced to pass it on as part of that stupid rotational policy. It was clear to me that he was their on-field leader...

... when he managed to get out there. ;)

This thread confirms a couple of things for me :

1. Many Carlton fans are clearly not over Hamill

2. Those same supporters have absolutely no class and will find enjoyment in players being injured to try and point score.

Spot on JD! It's a lot classier to get off (literally) on a footy club being down on its knees financially and on the filed... But you have to draw the line when it comes to the hard-man of football. It's just not right.

I also agree that many Carlton fans are not over Hamill. Many carlton fans are also not over Ron DeIulio.

To all the Blues supporters out there still fuming that we took the best years Hamill had to offer and the only thing left at your club: he would still be the best player at your club, especially when you are trying to decide who would be better for the captaincy: the boy who eats too many biscuits or the boy who eats too many pills.

The simple fact remains for us Saintas, Hamill is the cream on the top of the pie. We would love to have him out there every week, but the nature of his body suggests he should be viewed as a bonus – which we do.

Even is he never plays again (which I do not think will happen), it is worth every penny to see the still smarting faces of the once arrogant "you can not touch me because my club is rich", fat kid Blues.

Go pick up your toys from the pram, before they are repossessed. You got what was comin’. Waaaaahhhhhh…

Ha ha Sauce head, it will not be worth every penny when you have to let players go who can actually get on the park, whilst Aaron sits in the stands.

Fact is St Kilda thought they were smarter then everyone else by giving him a 5 year deal despite numerous examples of this being a bad move. It has come back to bite you on the bum. Put simply we are laughing at your bad player management.

Ha ha Grant Thomas had this to say in the Age. What a legend Grant is, he knew and still put him on the 5 year deal.

Hamill's coach of the past five-and-a-half seasons, Grant Thomas, who installed him as St Kilda captain in 2003, said last night he was "shattered" on hearing the news.

"You've got to back your medical staff and your specialists' and surgeons' judgement in all these things, and we've always known Aaron had a degenerative knee joint, but it was always felt that if we looked after him by way of his preparation and training and weight bearing and workload, he was going to be able to get to the starting line," Thomas said. "But this last situation has obviously been a fair jolt to him.

"I think he's had a cow of a run, which I'm sure would be doing his head in at the moment, but at least he's still got six weeks before the first game, so hopefully he'll be ready and available at some point during the season."

For the sake of the argument, if Hamill had not injured his knee, and was fit for all of the five years, would have that been a bad deal too?

If it's just the fact he is now injured that makes the deal bad then what you are doing is making a hindsight call. Everyone gets them right; if you think he isn't good enough to play AFL over five fit years that's a different matter entirely. Any of you detractors saying that?

I suspect he would have been re-signed over the period anyway, so really all this blarney is irrelevent.

I'm a big fan of Hamill and wish we had a player of his type at the Tigers.

Wouldn't wish ill on him whatsoever and hiopefully it's not the last we'll see of him.

It does put a big dent in the Saints finals hopes.
Good call, it makes you wonder if the likes of Linda and Bazza are fair dinkum because if they are it begs the question "how could some fans be so totally bereft of football knowledge"
I doubt it is the latter, one is very bitter and shell shocked the other, well it is inherant for their type to troll, which is fair enough considering they cop a fair bit themselves.

Irrelevant hypothetical.

Thomas has admitted that the club has always known about his degenerative knee joint, as per post above. A five year contract on a guy with a bung knee was always going to go pear-shaped. And I'm not saying this with hindsight - myself and other people have been saying it for years.

Timmy since you seem to know what's in his contract could you post the details for the rest of us?

Interesting summation of the thread JD. So its only "lemmings" who do not rate Hamill as a footballer worth his contract?

I'm not sure how you'd come to that conclusion based on the post you quoted.

While others certainly hold that view, I don't see anyone other than a couple of Collingwood trolls delighting in it like most Carlton supporters are.

Some of the comments in this thread are pathetic in the extreme.

Come on did you expect Aaron to get flowers?

Why is it so hard for you to accept you where wrong JD.
Wrong about what Slurpee?

He never deserved the initial contract you payed for him, let alone the extention.
Surely even you would acknowledge that now, surely!
Deserved?

WTF is that supposed to mean?

He came to St Kilda when he had a bigger offer on the table - indicating the market was prepared to pay at least what he got. He provided outstanding service for St Kilda and it's why he got the extension. No doubt the past two years have been disappointing but it's not uncommon for a player to have a couple of years of repeat injuries. Kouta & Harv's are two that spring to mind.

Aaron was prepared to put his body on the line and it's what he was rewarded for doing. I have absolutely no problem with that.

Interesting then that he played in a Grand Final with the Blues ....and yet you claim he played his best football with the aints . I guess playing in grand finals is not high on your teams list of prioritys

Actually, it's not.

The knee injury stemmed from his (admittedly foolish) collision with Steve Johnson. That post dated the contract by 18 months or so. His injury in 2005 was an ankle ligiment problem sustained against Collingwood early in the season, not a knee. So unless your expectation is that club officials become fortune tellers I fail to see how this could have been predicted when the contract was negotiated. Sure the terms were unusual, but without the injury there would be little downside.

All players on whatever length contracts face the possibility of long-term injury. I notice you ignored my examples of players from other teams facing long term injuries (including Bucks) ...

I realise you are enjoying yourself here putting the boot in to us, clearly you are incapable of thoughtful analysis, so I'm glad we are providing what seems to be a highlight in an otherwise hum-drum existence. :D

 So you are saying one man gets a side in to a GF? He can't play his best football if he is not in a GF?
Seriously , some of you Carlton people really are a bit lite on upstairs aren't you.. but rest assured you are by no means the only one.

Nice thread.

Good to see the Carlton fans once again gleeful about a St.Kilda player with a knee injury.

Noticed Surrey Blue straight on here happy once again. Good news once again hey Surrey like you reported it was good news about pennys career ending knee injury.

Gees I hope the lemming not go too feral when (not if but when) a Carlton player (hope it isn't Stevens, the guy you took from Pt Adelaide for more money, your very own Judas) has a serious career threatening injury. I m sure you wont mind when some low life morons come on here and rejoice.

Oh BTW I wont be the one, I hate seeing any player with a serious or potential career ending injury.

As for Hamill, well if thats it thats it. We move on. Players come and players go. If he cant play anymore well thats not the end of the world. Disappointing, but everyone retires eventually.

Thanks for the effort Sammy, at least at the Saints you were treated with dignity and you made a great decision to leave that rabble of a club with their cheats and corrupt admin and pathetic coach and hopeless on field playing list. Good move, and you will be known as a Sainst player not a rabble player from now on.
