Hear me out, GD'ers, I have a theory that spawned from the intrepid sleuthing the BF community did last year to expose Hamish McLachlan as a vain, narcissistic D-Grade celebrity. We saw a man whose identity was so tied to his public image that he personally had to update his wikipedia page to paint himself in a positive light.

Anyway.

I was on a wikipedia binge (see here: http://xkcd.com/214/) and I stumbled on the page of a washed up child actor/rapped who used to be called "Lil Bow Wow" and now just goes by "Bow wow". His page seemed pretty nondescript, with the usual biography and short personal life entries. I scan-read those, as you do, but something in particular interested me:

Claims of Bow Wow going broke have surfaced in and out of online media for the last quarter of the year. It even recently made its way to Wikipedia for a short period of time. Truth of the matter, though, is that Bow Wow is hardly broke and even addressed the rumors during his interview with RealTalkNY

Something about this sentence caught my eye. Someone, possibly a friend or committed fan of Bow Wow had closely been following his financial situation and social media stance "made its way" constantly. They must have been checking his wiki pretty regularly, I guess. What really grabbed my attention was the next sentence. "Truth of the matter" seems an oddly personal thing to say on a wikipedia article which is usually gardened by a publicist or agent for someone moderately famous. The phrase "hardly broke" compounds this by implying a face-to-face, personal relationship between the author of the wikipedia article and the rapper himself. Furthermore, it is an oddly defensive and emotive phrase to use on what should be an expository piece of writing about an artist's career. Finally, the use of "even addressed" sends the message that Bow Wow's time is that valuable that he has to take time out of his hectic schedule to answer criticisms. All of these little components seem to send the message of someone very close to Bow Wow is offended deeply by the monetary criticisms (these are rappers after all) and is setting the record straight, right from the horse's mouth.

Looking at Bow Wow's career, it seems to have followed the familiar path that many child stars have taken. His career seemed to reach its apogee around 2002, with the release of Like Mike as well as constant radio airplay internationally. Ever since then, he has faded into insignificance, becoming but a small speck in the constant white noise of celebrity rumours and promotions. My point is that no one gives two shits about Bow Wow anymore. He probably doesn't have that buffer of wordsmiths and social media spinners that most "successful" celebrities have. He probably doesn't get the luxury of having a fake "real" persona managed for him 24/7. When someone criticises him, it would probably reach his eyes before anyone with the acumen to cover it up with celebrity sheen. When was the last time you thought about Bow Wow? Exactly.

After all of this, my best guess is that our friend Bow Wow, the once celebrated mini-luminary who featured alongside Snoop Lion (nee Dogg), saw some critcisms slugged his way on twitter or whatever, chucked an tantrum, and decided to take matters into his own hands. He edited his own wiki, but was not subtle enough to cover his tracks and cover up his hilarious (but ultimately human) insecurity.

What do you think, GD? Can any of the more techie ones pull up wiki records and IP addresses etc (if that's at all possible?)

bow wow wow yippy yo yippy yay
where my daaaaawwwwgs at

Seriously though it’d be pretty common on Wikipedia I reckon. So much stuff you see written is similar to this – poorly written, very personal, simple opinion rather than fact etc etc.

I can kind of understand it. If you saw something about yourself on the web that was untrue and could correct it, many people probably would. Many would also go overboard however, trying to actually sculpt an image ie rompingwins.
