As you can see compared to the other 10 ruckman in the poll Hampsons numbers aren't that bad and IMO he gets unfairly maligned by our supporters as we look for a whipping boy/scapegoat for the teams poor performances. Sure there are areas that Hampson needs to improve on i.e. impact around the ground, but in terms of marking, outside McEvoy Jacobs Maric Griffiths & Sandilands, Hampson is taking as many marks as the others are. His tackling and 1% acts are also right up around the marks set by the other options.

As for the poll, well the majority picked McEvoy, a bloke who was secured in a trade where the Hawks gave away 2 first round picks (Dunstan & Acres) and Savage for McEvoy and Hartung & a pick used upgrading Ceglar. Hampson cost us pick 28 and while it would have been nice to have picked up Mumford who went for 35, however given we already have Maric as that bash and crash ruckman I'm not sure that would have been wise to have the 2 ruckman who are the same. Hampson as an athletic jumping ruckman gives us that point of difference in that he can leap over the top of the opposing ruckman. Fix up his around the ground work, get the set up that we spent all summer practicing up and running and I believe that we will see the full benefit of having recruited Hampson.

Griffith > Hampson

Once again Graham spent his career as a first choice ruckman, Hampson has spent his alternating between ruck and being a KPF, but lets not let that get in the way.

In his entire tie at Carlton Hampson only every average 20+ hitouts in a season once, comes to us gets played as first ruck week after week and he averages 35+ so far this season.

Like I've said it would be great to see him having a much greater impact around the ground and I believe that will happen when we're not asking him to play as a Maric type crash and bash ruckman.

Last 2 years at Carlton he had 19 games averaging: 9.63 Disposals 4 Marks 1 Goal 2 Tackles 16.3 Hitouts playing alongside Warnock/Kruezer in the ruck. If we get the same sort of return from him playing along side Maric it's a win, especially if it allows Vickery/Griffiths to play permanent forward as well.

You mean like Griffith? Wow just wow
Look at Hampsons figures alternating between Ruck and Forward last 2 years at Carlton and you'll get why we recruited him(well at least I hope you do)

Granted he isn't a world beater and has room for improvement, I think he is one of the least of our worries at the minute.

He is 5th in the league for hitouts and had he not missed a game, he'd be third behind Sandilands and Minson. Keep in mind we didn't trade for him to be an elite ruck or even to be Maric v2.0. We drafted him because we needed a ready to go ruckman who could offer something a bit different to Maric. Maric is a beast around the ground but he isn't a great tap ruck. Hampson on the other hand is a bit the opposite. Minimal impact around the ground but a great tap ruck. I think he will improve his contributions around the ground with time.

If the team wasn't struggling, you'd safely assume the midfield would be playing well. By extension, we might even be toasting Hampson's recruitment if he was giving them silver service at ruck contests. As the team is struggling, it's natural to look for a scapegoat.

Imagine the hate on these boards if we had got Trent West instead :drunk:

Where is the dropped marks stat?
Ignored by team mates stat?

th

Or do any of them ruckman act like idiots kick it to me kick it to me lol.

You also missed the run into team mates head-on stat and one hand mark attempts vs two hand mark attempts percentage.

I'll stick by the eye test over some hand-picked stats to try to defend him.

He's not a terrible player but he has no around the ground skills and he's working on one functional knee. Carlton weren't fussed to lose him for a reason. They'd seen it all and teared their hair out about his "potential" for years.

And we're still waiting on that potential.

I'd have to disagree with you there. Hampson is a terrible player.

At this point I'd even rather the Big O. At least he has a little bit of coordination and marking ability about him. Other than the initial ruck contest we may as well play with 21 players. Not only does he not get involved much but when he actually does he stuffs it up.

you mean when he got dropped in round 6 2013 to never return to the Carlton side once Kruezer and Warnock were fit? he was injured playing for Preston

I dont care for tap outs.... I want a competitive beast someone who only needs to provide a 50/50 .... I want a marking option around the ground.... someone falling back into defence and taking a grab. I want a player that presents a lead... I want a player who can kick and handall.

the best would compare a 25 year old Hampsons 6 games 2013 with a 22 year old Griffith 2014.... both have played 6 games... very similar. But Hampson was the go to man ... and Griffith has been the third tall for most of this season.

Well best the club starrs to look at free agency then...cos it sounds like you want a good un
..

Well the club has chosen to go with hampson.... and like RT has done, the club can use what ever stats they like to justify their decision.

But personally I would have liked us to give Griffith the number 1 ruck role. Brought in Vickery as the back up Ruck and Played Azzaa and Jack in the forwardline. Griffith has been thrown around from pillow to post. CHB... CHF...Ruck etc.... the bloke will be a weapon in a few years IMO... and the more games (only 25 so far) we put in him and the more we persevere the quicker he will reach his potential.. Hamspon has reached his.... and I would argue his marking and kicking etc has even gone backwards.

We all want another Maric and thankfully we get him back after the bye but with what we were prepared to pay, who else could the club have gotten who'd be better?

Even if Maric was playing now, I don't think we'd see a massive improvement out on the field. Maric's inclusion won't fix our terrible game plan, slow ball movement, constant turnovers or 6-12 out of form players currently getting a game. Hampson can definitely do more but he isn't the only 1.

I'll say it again, Hampson is the least of our worries at the moment.

Maric will have a HUGE impact when he returns..... the reason is, he provides a marking option around the ground. This Creates ball movement to him. It gives the players confidence to take the long option and thus we will start moving the ball quicker.... he also is a monster around the stoppages... gets his hands dirty and is ok below his knees.... he is like that extra midfielder we have been missing. .... He also pushes back into to defence to help out... how many goal saving marks has Hampson taken this year???? oh yer thats not his job??? blah blah .... He can also push forward and take a grab and kick that much needed goal.... How many times has Hampson drifted forward and taken a vital mark this season and slotted a goal???? oh yer thats not his job?????blah blah blah..... Maric tackles.... he knocks the ball on.... his kicks hits targets.... he wins his own ball. ..... Sure our hit outs might drop back a few but I know what type of Ruckman I would have chased and its not a Hampson type. ..... Both Jesse White and Andejs Everitt were much cheaper and more versatile options than Hampson.

The other thing Maric does is he raise the intensity of the contest...... something we have missed alot.

For all your hyping of Maric only 2 people selected him based on his stats from last year as the player they want to replace Hampson, in fact more people chose Griffiths than Maric. This was part of the idea behind this poll. People more often base their selections on names rather than actual performance. If I just put the names up without stats I have no doubt that Maric would have polled much higher than he did, same with guys like Sandilands & Minson.

IDGAF what people on have chosen in your silly little exercise... based on stats alone. .... Lets have a look at the percentage of wins we have with Maric playing and Maric not playing. Because I fail to see the stats about players walking taller when he is in the side... I fail to see the stats on putting fear into the oppostion....

I think as a club we have become too reliant on using stats to make decisions... God help Cyril if he played for us.
