Hampson vs Jacobs

I get what you're saying. I still think that it is far too early to give up on him yet. We all know that a big bloke takes a while to develop. What if the gamble pays off? A 202cm bloke whose faster than most of the midfielders and can jump high enough to to take screamers over most ruckmen.....just gold.

I hope he does develop and i guess now with Cloke, Kruze and Sauce its a bonus if Hampson delivers!

Warnock i think will still deliver long term, saw some good footage of him!

I really like what i saw about Jacobs, with our midfield a tap ruckman is a real bonus..We have Kruze and Cloke to do the around the ground stuff!

Hampson for me.. jacobs has potential but hampson looks to have a stronger body than jacobs and hampson has shown a lot more than jacobs. I dont think jacobs will be on the blues list next year

Gotta question this, SeychellesSeychellesByTheSeaShore.

To me Big Sauce can get his hand on the ball at the stoppages more often than Hammer. I'd give the Hammer the year in the Ants to hone his rucking and dare i say forward skills. He could be a fantastic option up forward but the issue is getting those big mitts around the ball. Against the Cats he got his fair share of opportunities to take a grab but couldn't grasp the footy. Kick balls at him at training, get him marking the ball. Play him in the ruck and up forward in the Ants and he'll be much much better for it in the long run IMO. If Sauce does struggle in the first few games then he may be given a chance but i'd be willing to give Hammer more time to develop.

I'm leaning towards this as well. I think the Bunbury game will settle who will ruck round 1 with Kreuzer.

Does anyone else feel slightly concerned we are giving a 19 year old first ruck? And a 20 year old 2nd ruck? I don't want them to turn into Josh Frasers.

Is a major concern, but they are all we have and everyone has to start somewhere, agree about the Josh theory, hate to see Kruze go that way.

Please play both - we need depth, not quick fixes.

Cloke won't get any better in the ruck. So that leaves four big kids: Matt, Shaun, Rob and Sammy. One we can virtually write off for 2009. By the time Warnock is fit to return he'll need a few games in the 2s to get his touch back, by which time the other 3 will have hopefully cemented spots. But as Renouf showed for the hawks last year, you never know which 2 out of 3 will make it.

I don't think we're strong enough at this stage to deem which promising kids will make it. The NAB series has given some hope of playing all 3 at a time. I think we can play 2 on the ground at a time, with a 3rd rotating off the bench. If Cloke fills the role of bullocking CHF, there may still be scope for a decoy forward pocket (just need to sort out leads with Fev). And then there's the scenario of a ruckman dropping back into the space in the backline. One of them may fill a role here - rather than grooming Setanta for a specialist big defender post when clearly he's behind Waite/Jamison/Bower/Thornton in all other areas (footy related!) besides height and muscle.

At this stage, I think we can play 3 raw rucks + Cloke in the one side, each playing around 75% game time - none of them yet have the 'tank' to play 4 quarters anyway. Underutilisation (i.e. extended periods of time on the bench ala Hampson 2008) is more a failure of the coaching staff to assign them roles than the selection committee picking too many talls.

Remember it's a 22+ game season and we need to give all our young rucks each the time to develop for this year and the future. We're crying out for depth and will otherwise be back to square one if we hit injuries or poaching from the Gold Coast. For this reason I'd be carrying an extra tall throughout the season. If Cloke doesn't work out as a key position player, he may be the one to drop out rather than Jacobs/Hampson. (Plus, there's a small chance the selection committee may roll the dice one more time on Hartlett or Edwards)

Remember folks - injuries. Our ruck division has been stuffed since we made the fateful mistake to trade Mark Porter.

And who's to say Kreuzer won't be groomed as a permanent monster forward? We all know his hip is suspect (despite a recent cleanup).

From what I have read it sounds like Sandilands won the ruck convincingly.
With Warnock out, this must be an area of concern for the Bluebaggers again this year. Is Cam Cloke going to play some time in the Ruck?

I like what I have seen of Jacobs, I still think Hampson needs some more experience. As Gerard Healy stated, he can't be jumping off two feet like basketball.

Jacobs is well in front at this time .
His ruck work has been pretty good considering his age , experience etc., and he's the best we've got at the moment .
He has also been a link man coming out of defence sometimes , and done it well . Knows where to position himself , takes the mark and fires off a quick hand pass to the running player .
Hammer hasn't a clue about this sort of play .

A 200cm plus ruckman must hold overhead marks . At the moment Hammer will cost us games not holding these marks .
He needs a lot more time in the VFL , and plenty of help from the coaches to overcome this problem .
Will never be a force in AFL until he can . He is big , strong , agile , fast etc. , just needs to get the basic skills right and then he'll be OK .
