Just wandering if anyone has some some more info on him. Had not heard too much about him before yesterday but was relatively pleased to see him make Burgatron's top ten. Thanks.

Ran 20m in 3.00 sec at draft camp. 200 cm ruckman from Queensland who's a recent convert to football. Apparently he impressed Hughes during a QAFL match where he competed in a match against Cameron Wood and won the duel. Athletic but like all ruckman will likely need a couple of pre seasons before he starts to make an impact.

That's about all I've managed to scrounge up.

quick ruckman.
good enough to make top 10 and is a recent convert. this generally means that in the next year or 2 his skills, smarts and strength will change massively. After 2 years you generally have a rapid increase in knowledge and skill.

Cheers, thanks for that fellas. So I'm guessing that the overall consensus is that we're happy with the pick.

Seems like Renouf may have been the safer (and more expected) choice but if the club saw something extra in Hampson, glad we went for him.

from what ive seen of both renouf and hampson renouf is better. bu having only spent 2 years in the game i think hampson will excel in a football club enviroment.

The AFL talent identification now is so detailed and far reaching it's rare for any kid who can run, catch and kick not to be fully examined before the draft. Hampson has been contacted by 15 clubs.
At 202cm and 95kg, he has the physical attributes. But he's raw and needs to get stronger. And most likely he's going to be a work in progress for a couple of seasons at least to fully learn the game and the craftsmanship of a ruckman.
Through his school years Hampson excelled at sport. He was a very good 100m runner who also was successful at the discus and swimming. His English father Tom is an avid soccer fan so it was the round ball game which had appeal to Hampson until 2004.
His flirtation with AFL came on the back of the Lions' third premiership victory in 2003.
"I'd watched the Lions win and thought it looked a pretty interesting game," Hampson said.
"I decided to try AFL at my school, John Paul College. That was in 2004. At halftime in my first game I was approached by Corey Bell from the AFLQ. I was picked to go into the Bushrangers under-18 squad later that year."
In 2005, Hampson joined the Mt Gravatt club and played under-18s in his first season but finished the past season as the No. 1 ruckman in the seniors. His development has been rapid. But there is a huge leap ahead if he is to make the grade at the elite AFL level.

202cm and 95Kg... can't wait to see him in 2 years time, with Leuenberger battling against Hampson and our wonderful, amazingly talented and strong midfield. Boy that gets me excited...

Jesse White kicked four goals to provide a winning target up forward, while Shaun Hampson capped an outstanding championships with another good effort in the ruck. Midfielder Scott Jamieson, returning from a shoulder reconstruction, also did well.

Big Shaun Hampson worked tirelessly in the ruck for the Bushies against the two-pronged opposition of Renouf and James Mulligan,

and well-fed by ruckman Shaun Hampson

Perhaps not the best ruckman in the draft, after Leueny, but he does not sound bad. I think with a bit of work and bulk, he'll be coming through with a good group of young guys, we'll have a good ruckman on our hands in a few years.

Finally, a ruckman project! YAY!

thats freaky. its my old high school in a different state:thumbsu:

i played with hampo at Mt. Gravatt this year and in the QLD 18's. you guys should be rapt you've picked him up. some of the things he did in the QAFL this year for a guy his size were amazing. very talented and i think is the better prospect over renouf (don't get me wrong brents great and deserved to be picked) hopefully it all goes well for him down at carlton.

I heard that Renouf might not even end up a Ruck in the AFL, more turned into a KPP.

And the best thing about him is he has the most upside from all the ruckmen picke other then prolly Luey.

That's a pretty fair assessment. I think Hughes realises that the role of a ruckman is evolving. Having 200cm+ ruckman, who are also sensational athletes will become more of a priority. I am reasonably happy with Hampson and Ackland. Much better than what we had last year, although I'm not expecting too much from Hampson next year. Aisake is also an excellent prospect, but is about a year or 2 away. I guess the big question is the role for McLaren over the next few years. Really can't see him fitting into our team structure. :)

I reckon its a good pick. He seems to have more upside that Renouf, and we get 12 months to examine him. Next year we take Kreuzer, and we end up with either the best young ruck tandem in the league (and you need a ruck tandem for modern footy, no doubt about that), or if Hampson surprises and looks really, really good we can either take more midfielders or trade the pick to fill a gap. From the sounds of things, Renouf is solid but unlikely to be a star, and we're well stocked with solid backup ruckmen, so might as well take a chance...

Wow.
Thanks for the info griffy!

Good foot skills for a guy his height aswell. We need to be patient with Shaun, if given the correct tuition and time to develope, I think we've got a steal here. Massive upside.

Dempsey will be wrapt, he's got the piece of clay he wanted to mold.:thumbsu:

Hopefully Dempsey can weave his magic with Hampson and Aisake.

We need one more developing ruckman on the list, and then we will be doing OK.
