Hampson

Hey Hampson, just wanna say one thing. If you're in the opposition goal square and can get both your hands on the tap. Just put it through for a ****ing behind!!!

Sick of this one week memory crap. Hampson has come along in huge strides. He won't ever be a Cloke type, but he's the best we have.

One week? He's be doing the same crap since he started God know how many years ago.

IMHO, he hasn't improved like other posters think he has.

Nothing against the guy, but is not, and never will be, a decent AFL footballer.

Hampson might take the best defender when the ball is coming into our fwd 50, but after he spills an easy mark he's no where to be seen as the ball gets moved up the other end of the ground at breakneck speed.

Mooney was ten times the player Hampson will ever be as well.

i would almost prefer he spills the mark because thats when betts and garlett should be accountable and play there best footy.
ok granted mooney was better than hampson but he was no fev or j brown which everyone seems to expect hampson needs to become.
all i'm saying is hampson is a long way from our worst player. all he needs to do to get picked every week is to play a role within the team thats all.

He's improved. Without Waite in the side, he's being asked to play as the number forward and that he isn't.

Still, 14 goals from 11 games isn't a bad effort, even if most of those were with Waite in the side. Let's not forget that despite kicking those goals, he's actually averaging more hitouts than Kreuzer (think he was seventh overall in the comp).

He's got his limitations but he's a handy player who'll only improve with experience, as he's been doing for the past 5 years.

Ideally our rucks would be Warnock and Kreuzer with Henderson holding.down a forward post. Development of young back to come on quickly and play as 2nd defender. Henson moved back vs teams like hawks with big.forwards

I see this thread is full of the same idiots claiming the same crap they always have. Lets ignore for the moment that he averages better than a goal a game this year - for the record more than both warnock and kreuzer combined, and thats against good and bad teams. Lets ignore the fact that we have a team full of people who have no idea how to deliver a ball to a tall forward in the square. lets also ignore the fact that for whatever reason hes often found roaming the wing.

While we're at it lets also lambast his ruckwork, one of which lead to simpsons goal in the last quarter. The guy is playing a position foreign to him and most ruckmen, and dealing with delivery that looks like its coming from a team of people that got in from a special school for the weekend and if you dont believe me look at their kicking for goal tonight.

Unfortunately last night he was the old fumbly, uncoordinated Hammer :(

However, he has shown this year he can really play. The main thing that frustrated me last night was his, erm, defensive effort against West deep in defense. But he's no defender.

Hopefully that puts the "Hampson to CHB" arguments to rest :p

He's an athlete, not a footballer.

As an aside, how many marks did we take inside the forward 50 last night?

Hampson has just had natural progression. Like how a 10 year old is taller than when he/she is 5 years old...

He has not come along like we wanted. We have basically wasted resources trying to make him into a player he never is or will be...

Seems to try hard. Tbh, I dont think Ratten has ever been able to really identify talent...

It took him 3 years to work out walker was a forward not a half back, Russell was no good, and Henderson was a backman...

Does anyone think he can play besides Ratten?
Look I think he deserves another 6 to 8 seasons.

Did he drop more marks than he took?

I just don't understand why we persit with him, the only time he contributes is when we win and win easily outside of that he carn't read the play well enough to play as a fwd.

His effort in the last quarter when he failed to push hard back on the cats ruckman who then sealed the game with a mark on the goal line was beyond pathetic, especially when combined with half a dozen dropped marks.

He was shocking tonight, but he can clearly play and play well.

Hammer has played very well at times this year but has fallen away badly, particularly over the past month or so.

Typical overreaction thread, but that's hardly surprising.

Look his season average of 9.6 disposals , 4 marks , 2 tackles , 1 goal at 24 years of age shows he is really coming along.

Don't let that get in the way of their venting and amnesia. They do a better than the trolls who hate Carlton.

Sorry, let's post one or two passages of play when Hampson did something decent and proclaim him the second-coming of Peter Moore, all the while forgetting (cos we have amnesia, right?) about the remainder of his VFL-standard career.

That's how it's done isn't it TG?

The apologists and sycophants on this board are pathetic.

Its funny how people change their opinions so quickly. Just a few weeks ago everyone was saying how amazing he has been and that he is one of the most improved players in the comp.

I think having warnock in the side has hurt his form, he's not a permanant forward. He should play 60% there 40% ruck. I think having him play permanant isnt good for him nor the team, as if he drops a few marks he will start losing confidence. Having him play in the ruck for extended periods as we did early on let him get around the contest, get some possessions and get his overall confidence up. Since this has dropped off so has him output.

Also alot of the balls coming into him last night where terrible kicks, either over the top, or sky balls. we needa hit him on the lead, as with a person of his size and speed of the mark he would be incredibly hard to stop. ie) mitch clark. im not saying hes going to be mitch clark but atleast he would provide a decent option

Hope you guys don't mind my input. He strikes me as a player who plays well when Carlton plays well, like a barometer for the side. I think he's talented and would flourish at Collingwood or Sydney.

If he wasn't 6' 9" he'd be playing in the QAFL reserves, if at all.

He'd probably still be a soccer player.

I don't think I have ever seen a player drop as many chest marks. What's the excuse for that???

As long as Eddie leads to the pockets and we keep kicking it long to him there (hell when in adelaide eddie spent half the training time on the boundary taking shots at goal) there is almost no point in even trying to play a tall forward out of the square. Which is where you play people like Hampson. Not out at centre half forward. I think they are trying to get his run into the game, while ignoring the fact that he does lack a certain level of skill at ground level. Probably have no choice given kreuzer seems to be below his best and is probably injured along with waite.

And then look at our delivery forward ffs. Almost no kicks were to his advantage. People want him to be batman. With Matthew Scarlett, multiple times All australian defender hanging off him.

Dud of epic proportions. Hope he requests a trade at years end, don't care if we get a fifth rounder for him. You can't live on potential for 6 years, he should be in his prime but is playing like he is in his 2nd year. He will never dominate the ruck and will never kick bags of goals, he may have the odd good game and kick 3 but that is the most you will ever get out of him. A key position forward, that's what the MC are trying to make him into, needs to consistantly kick 3 goals a game, he will never ever do that week in week out.

Not going to bother mentioning his marking:oops::oops::oops:

Not every Key Position Forward that kicks less than 70 goals a season is a spud.

A player who plays well only when the team plays well is not a barometer of anything.

OK so the knee jerkers get their way, who comes in? Thornton or Mitchell? Mitchell is far too raw and was out performed by Lucas Cook in his VFL showing. The Casey VFL defender also outbodied him plenty of times, he isn't ready yet.

Thornton has a very hard time dealing with the no.1 defender and will go completely missing. At least Hammer makes a contest at most times.

Our forward line issues lay in having to solely rely on midfielder goals and Betts. Garlett missing goals from 2 metres out is inexcusable, yet Hampson cops it because he looks gangly and nobody likes the uber handsome jock :)

Can you even say that?
