With the speculation surrounding Harbrow moving to the gold coast, i was interested to hear peoples thoughts about the issue. More so knowing he would be an important part of our team's crack at the premiership this season, if it turned out he had already committed to the gold coast would people still be keen for him to be wearing the bulldogs jumper for the rest of the season. Just interested to hear people's opinions after Paul Roos said he would say "cya later" to any1 who had signed

Roos is in a position to take the high moral stance on this as his team is not likely to figure prominently in the finals but for any club with high expectations of breaking a premiership drought, the decision needs to be a pragmatic one. We need Harbrow playing for us and playing well this season. What happens after that is another story. Personally I would be shattered to see him leave.

If Harbrow wanted to leave I doubt he would say anything until after the season finished he's just not like that.

To answer your question, no I wouldn't want him there.

won't be shattered if he or anyone else leaves, anyone that does not want to commit to the club can get lost.

That being said Harbrow has a friendship thing with Josh Hill like that of Franklin/Roughead so that could play a part, i think they said it was their ultimate dream to play AFL consistenly together (with Malcolm Lynch too but he is delisted).

I hope he does the right thing by the club that gave him the pathway to a AFL career through a rookie pick and countless hours of investment that if he was to go he would at least sign a contract but agree to be traded thus giving us some bargaining power.

this is a tough one to answer because whilst we'd all know he was leaving, it wouldn't be because he desperately wanted out of the club, therefore he'd still give his all.
i will be absolutely shattered if he leaves. i've been following him the whole way and i picked his talent from the start and i was proved right last season. he basically goes unnoticed but, in my opinion, he's one of our most important players. the bulldogs need to go everything possible to keep him.

Most clubs will endure a bit of hurt when GC17 & GWS18 come into the comp.

The minute the entry provisions for those clubs were sanctioned it was pretty evident that they were going to cause concerns for clubs in one of two ways; 1) clubs were going to lose players they didn't want to & 2) clubs would would feel salary cap pressures in their efforts to re-sign existing players.

Clubs can moan, whinge & grizzle about it (better if they left that to the supporters, that's what we do best!) or they can plan ahead, accept that unpalatable scenarios will arise & be as best placed as they can to counter it.

Player managers are going to be a nuisance through the exercise as they are going to play clubs off against each other to extract the best deals for their clients.

Will I be filthy if we lose a player to either/both of the new entities? You betcha, but what good will it do if I carry on like a pork chop? Sod all, so I might as well not worry over what I can't control & let it unfold.

What will be will be.

If he was to leave what sort of compensation are we likely to get? Might be in our best interests to keep him playing. A premiership player is surley worth more than a player who ended up not playing in the seniors.

Having said that, would hope he is not leaving, love the way he plays!

does ricky 'o manage any of our players apart from Cooney and Lake? this quote just has me a bit worried we will be one of the clubs that have to give up something:

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/new-clubs-strive-to-sign-pick-of-crop-20100217-odux.html

Rick Olarenshaw, from Essentially, added that ''just because a player might have decided that at the end of the year he'll walk away to explore new opportunities elsewhere, doesn't mean he won't give everything he has to the club he is at this year''.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/new-clubs-strive-to-sign-pick-of-crop-20100217-odux.html

I wouldn't be too worried about it, this year is going to be a media circus and they are all rubbing their hands with glee as they can write articles based on opinions and adding 2+2=5 passing them off as something with substance. Basically every good player coming out of contract will be mentioned at some stage during the year, and if that player comes from Queensland than will be definately going according to the media stories.

Yeah, I agree with Griff above. There will be speculation, guesswork and inaccuracies galore over the next year or two involving both GC and GWS. Not just from the media, but by you, me, everyone on BigFooty, everyone standing around the office water cooler, every mate of a mate's second cousin twice removed. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed that the damage to us will be minimal. No point in speculating whether or not we should play someone who may have committed to another team.... how would we know? If he has, he ain't telling. If he hasn't, he'd be bemused by all the uneccessary fuss.

I don't thnk you blame any player who can earn 2x what they're on when a serious injury could be around the corner.

I don't like what the AFL has decided to do, but its a business and it sees green. I'm not sure how many fans the AFL will lose to the game, but it seems pretty confident of attracting more fans/revenue by adding the two new teams.

The best way for them to seek revenue is by making the two new teams competitive immediately. It is, therefore, inevitable they we (like other clubs) will lose a player, whether it be a gun like Cooney or a lesser player like Harbrow.

I'd be more worried about Cooney leaving than Harbrow. I know he has a family here now, but he'd be GC17's second or third highest paid player, and it's hard to refuse a contract offer like the one he is likely to get if the GC do choose to go after him.

I'm probably just paranoid, but by Cooney saying he doesn't think he'd be a good fit as captain, I considered the worst case scenario that "what if" he is saying that because he has been chased by GC with an irresistible contract offer?

I would have thought showing your desire to be club captain would more often than not show how loyal you are to the club. OK, some instances like Judd don't support this theory, but most of the time a club captain is loyal to their club.

It would be good if they targeted someone like Mitch Hahn instead (after he wins a premiership). He still has a bit to offer a club, he's from QLD, plus we would be able to replace him easier than Cooney and Harbrow.

I'm also a bit worried about Reid. I'd hate to see him off to QLD.

Hahn has probably only got 1-2 seasons left in him and Reid has a two year contract so they are safe.

it's pretty interesting to look at
i personally don't think cooney will be leaving in fact i'm almost certain his going to be with us next year. Harbrow though is a player you can see leaving not just cause his from qld but the form he has been showing is deserving of a reasonable pay rise something we won't be able to give him.

Very well said JCVD,

We will just have to all wait and see what happens.

Any player, whether it be Harbrow or Cooney or whoever, if they are found out to have signed on or committed to the Gold Farce team should spend the season with Williamstown thirds playing out their contract. The club expects the players to have skill, ability as well as loyalty and commitment to the club (used to be a big sign at the Western Oval changerooms saying commitment). By saying they'll play with the Gold Farce they have shown they don't have the back bone or guts to provide the loyalty and commitment to the club, its players and supporters and can't be trusted to put 100 percent into the games they play with us, they are just playing for the money along the lines of Judus Brown, Judd and Buckley.

I too am not worried about GC and GWS but lets just say for the sake of this thread Adam Cooney (premirship player, 2 time brownlow player:D) agrees to terms with the gold coast, on a deal worth 2-3 times what he is on with us.

Would you blame him for doing whats best for him and his young family by setting himself up for life? would you see him in the same light as you see Nathan Brown?

I think any player that goes up to the GC isn't going just because they want to leave their club, i think it will be because they are doing whats right for them ie the money.

It will hurt if cooney or any other player leaves, but I would understand the reasons behind them, as i dont think it would be due to a player seeking a trade to get out, it will be them doing whats best for them.

Let's put ourselves in his position. If I was on 300K per year and an offer of emplyoment for 4 years at 800k per year was on the table, what would I do.

If I am say 22 yrs of age and have a wife/partner , will have a family on the way or in the next few yrs, the decision is a no brainer.

Look after your future and take the money.

On the other hand if the offer can be close to being met by a property or investment portfolio outside the club, the doggies have me for life.

Cheers

Jarrod

Why should the be loyal? It's a Professional sport now unlike in the past where they had to work during the week to make Ends meat.

Can i ask you what you do for work? lets just say a new company enters the field that you work in, knocks on your door and offers you More money then your on now, money that could set you up for life for you and your family. Do you take it? or do you stay Loyal to the job that you have been in for how ever many years. I think most people will take the money to set themselve up for life.

I'd rather lose Harbrow than Griff or Coon - if we can get through this GC nightmare and only lose Harbrow then I'd be happy.
I'm expecting us to lose more than just that though.
The position the club is in with Clayton is very uncomfortable. The guy was made a life member when he left and hopefully he pulls his punches a bit when he runs his eye over our list.
We don't deserve to cop this - the bigger clubs that rorted the system for years and bought premierships and success should be copping all the hurt.

The reality is that loyalty has to be a two-way street. The club has shown (as any club needs to in the modern era) that loyalty to players is not a priority (think of Scott West).

If Harbrow leaves (and holy crap I hope he doesn't), I could understand the move. He might get double the money we could give him and he might want to move closer to his original home. I certainly don't have the loyalty to my employer to knock back that kind of offer.

But he is one of my favourite players to watch, and I would hate to see him in any other colours than red, white and blue. Please Jarrod, stay. :thumbsu:

They should because the club has shown faith in them. Its not as if they are underpaid. I'd question someone's lifestyle & spending habits if they couldn't support a family on 300k a year. They should have enough talent to earn a living after footy, e.g. Cooney is great on TFS! :)

Anyway I'm certain Cooney will stay. Probably Harbrow too. I'd be sad to see Hahn go, but we can cover him. Is Williams contracted to next year?
