List Mgmt. Hard decisions

Agree, the hard choices are with those you mentioned and as Fish said Howlett but it also relates to a few of our top line players.
The problem we have all our best midfielders are slow and if we bring Myers and Hocking back in then we are still slow. It is a serious problem.
We are simply too one paced and if we can not hang onto the ball or play on quickly then we are in big trouble.
Run and spread side kill us.

At this stage Hocking still has a place IMO because he is still the only bloke who can run with anyone , play hard ball, do the team stuff and be a little creative when he gets it. You could argue this should not be the case but no one coming through can do it. Melksham is trying hard but he simply does not have the same effect.

Then we get to Myers, very very good player but the same in a lot of ways as Heppell and Jobe other than he kicks it further on the left.
So what do we do ?
The bloke is a good player, probably replaces Howlett in the current side but still gives us a one paced midfield.
That is the hard decision right there and there are plenty of arguments both ways.

Another hard choice, Zaka, for a bloke in the leadership group he plays uninspiring footy, the only time he looked fast is when a goal is on offer,
he has zero defensive run and just trundles along when we have not got the ball. If he gets a tag he is out of the game and i am not sure he
even knows the word Sheppard.

The hard choice will be weeding out the blokes who do not want to play team footy and that goes right to the top. I would not for a minute entertain
getting rid of Jobe but he is also a part of the problem along with Goddard. The go in hard, they lead to a degree they tackle when they can but it is all
in an attacking sort of way. How often do you see either sheppard for their team mates ? For i bloke his side Jobe really does not show a lot of
physical effort at times. Goddard will bump but spends more time waving his arms than playing footy at times which brings us to Heppell another gun who wont shirk the issue but for some reason protecting his team mates in not in his play book and like Goddard thinks waving your arms and directing is leadership.

Today showed what we need. A young Cooney . Outside pace. Kicks goals and when in space uses the ball bloody well.

As a side we just don't do enough team stuff, we do not work hard enough in non possessions time, we do not really play a physical brand of footy.
Our leaders do not always put everything on the line for the side. That is the big problem.
Totally agree regarding the shepherds... If we had done better in that area we would have beaten Collingwood for sure.
Wrote a long reply but realised it can be abbreviated to just this. The balance we have in our best 26 is pretty good between muscle and pace, with the one glaring issue. Cooney. We need cover for him because we are too slow without him. If either Edwards or Dal come good then i'm pretty happy with the balance that we have. WB got done for muscle today which goes to show pace isn't everything.

Great post Ant, agree with everything you have written.

You have highlighted our one paced midfield which imo is a big problem, but what are the hard decisions needed to be made to fix it?

Stanton and Goddard not genuine midfielders so they need to be out of the middle. Full stop. Neither are good clearance players. Both more suited to wings or flanks. So to start with we need some genuine midfielders with above average pace.
May need to make a choice between Myers and Heppell, tough call, both inside mids. Or is it Zaka who feels the heat.
Down the track is Heppell part of the defensive rotation if Myers is in the middle?
Tell the captain what is needed to make us go to the next level, i think the whole list could use some home truths.

Something has to give, we may have to trade someone we do not want to and that could be Myers, Zaka, Carlisle, Bellchambers or someone with currency.

It is easy to say throw big money at someone like Dangerfield as has been suggested but i am sure everyone other than Port and maybe the WA sides are looking at doing the same. We had a very big go at Mitch Clarke but just missed in the end. I suppose the ASADA situation did not help there.
They have to be creative, trade, FA whatever but it may have to involve giving up one of the bigger names.

Melbourne had a crack at him glad he refused their offer underrated.

He never had a offer from them. Also Myers is not underrated. Dude can't get on the park, and frankly, hasn't done all that much when he has been.

Interesting to think that to bring in Hocking and Myers right now would mean leaving out Howlett and Melksham. That does make the side a little slower.

If we had to lose a big name, i would choose Zaka. Not something i want to happen, but if it had to be someone then it would be him just because i don't think he is as team oriented as the others. Tends to be a bit ego driven i think...

Myers isn't the future beyond Watson.
Different players.
Merrett/Gleeson should step in for Watson's role when the time comes, as well as Laverde.

We are a few picks down thanks to an over-ambitious AFL Commission. And while there hasn't been a lot of midfield stars (outside possibly having Dunstan or Acres on the list) that we've missed out on, we're down about 3 kids
I think we've done well with our list.

We are a handful of FA/trade signings away from getting the development back on track

We've got a lack of clearance mids to replace Jobe. Pretty much just Heppell and Myers. Young flankers like Z. Merrett and Laverde might develop into inside mids but at the moment the only depth is guys who are very unproven and even unlikely to make it such as Kavanagh and Hams.

Which trade/s are you referring to?

See ASADA, that was something drastic to improve the side.

Despite continuing success through the draft and a recent history of not going 'hell for leather/chuck shit at the wall and see what sticks/Richmond' at the trade table no one is seeminly willing to leave well enough alone at the moment.

This post proves you see nothing of the twos!

Kavanagh/Hams are the guys beyond Jobe.
