Untouchable

Hibberd
Bellchambers
Watson
Stanton
Daniher
Merrett Z
Goddard
Zaharakis
Baguley
Cooney
Hurley
Heppell
Carlisle
Myers
Hooker
Ambrose
Colyer

Safe

Dempsey
Melksham
Hocking
Howlett
McKernan
Giles

Can't see the club wanting to lose any of these, even if it's just for depth - which is important. But if we were to trade a player, it's have to come from here I think.

Make a call

Merrett J 22yo
O'Brien 22yo
Kavanagh 22yo
Browne 22yo

I think Merrett and NOB will get at least another year. Kavanagh and Browne I feel may not.

Kids - hold

Dalgleish 21yo
Ashby 21yo
Edwards 21yo
Hams 20yo
Gleeson 20yo
Fantasia 19yo
Laverde 19yo
Long 19yo
McKenna 19yo
Langford 18yo

I think Dalgliesh, Edwards and Hams especially will need to show something in 2015/2016.

Problems

Pears
Steinberg
Kommer
Gwilt
Aylett

Can't see many of these remaining on the list, though Gwilt probably will for depth. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing the back of the rest.

Gawn

Chapman
Winderlich
Fletcher

I think we probably have 7 - 8 list changes to do, which is a lot. 4 kids will come out of the national draft, the rest remains to be seen. We certainly have no trade value.

This is all assuming ASAGA is done and dusted. If it's not, who knows.

We aren't playing great, and we have to cop to that. We have the talent, but it isn't firing. Why is a massive question. Is there motivation? Is WADA a deflation factor? Losing Bomber? the shambles that was the off-field offseason? Missing Myers & Hocking? Ryder?
We have to get back to intensity on the field. I've seen this group of players do it. So the list is no excuse.
Watch what Richardson has the Saints doing. Its quick football. They hassle the ball carrier. Run hard. And compete. We lack so much of that at the moment.

That said, we are facing into the strength of the Hawks, with two legit challengers in Sydney and Freo. GWS are coming and we need to be planning to get up there and challenge them.

Chapman and Fletcher probably aren't part of a flag.
Watson, Goddard, Cooney and Stanton probably can be. With the condition they keep themselves in, these guys can compete into their mid 30's.

We do need to recruit smart over the next 1-2

A flag team to me looks like:
?? Daniher Fantasia - We need to recruit what Winders gave us. Smart around the ball, goal sense and the ability to snag 2-3 goals a game. I think Fantasia is class for this type of role as well. Too soon to play him, but i like what I've seen. Possibly Dalgleish/Edwards can be developed here with their pace being their main weapon. Quick, small forwards in the game today (esp with our haphazard fwd entries) are critical.

Colyer ??? Langford - Love the look of Langford as a third tall. Colyer's pace (with Fantasia and another FP) is still a weapon, just needs to lift the output a bit to get back to 2014 levels. A competitive CHF is a must. I'd love Charlie Dixon or Sam Day here. We went for Membrey and Clark and missed out last year. Missed Gunston. We should target and land one this season.

Our mids bat deep. We may lose Chappy, but i like that we landed Laverde.
Watson, Heppell, Goddard, Myers, Stanton, Merrett, Zaka, Gleeson all show class.
What is missing in that group is pace and a stoppage bull. i.e. Dangerfield. Im interested to see if we can make a show for him. We've missed Mundy and Boak in recent years as targets. Either Danger or Sloane would be massive for us. A midfielder who can run, create space, win a contested ball, and create under pressure would compliment the current midfield depth.

Backline, im not worried.
I like that Stanton, Goddard, Gleeson and Heppell can all rotate through there to rest back as well as forward
Hooker, Hurley, Carlisle, Hibberd, Baguley is a strong back 5. Pace of the backline through Dempsey is great, but we need to upgrade on his disposal and decision making. Im more open to putting guys like Goddard/Stanton back to help create that run and use their class vs trying to recruit and develop.

Ruck, we have slipped so far.
From Hille, Ryder, Belly and Jenkins, we have one left. And he is struggling to make a mark.
Where you get a replacement for Ryder I don't know. We were rather shafted there. And given how long it took to get Ryder going, we're behind the 8-ball here.

Edwards Daniher Fantasia
Colyer Day Langford
Zaka Myers +quick, elite mid
Goddard Hurley Hibberd
Baguley Hooker Carlisle
Bellchambers Watson Heppell
Gleeson Merrett Stanton Cooney

Edward could easily be any other player, perhaps a recruit that comes on in a short time.
Laverde will break into that team at some point. Not sure he has the pace to the quick, elite mid.

Of course, critical to all this, is getting them playing better football than they are now.

They are the blueprint for building a club.
Geelong was a case of right picks at the right time with a couple of great drafts and trades.
But the Hawks took a couple of years getting early picks in Hodge, Lewis, Roughead, Franklin and Rioli, and an eye and stomach for targeting players for short term gap fills (Dew, Burgoyne, Gibson, Lake, McEvoy, Gunston - did we fk up here, Ceglar)
Gave up Williams, McGlynn and Kennedy for Burgoyne. Acres and Dunstan for McEvoy.

And bought themselves a 5 year window to win a number of flags.
Landing two elite forwards in one draft is rare.

I hope people notice what they did there too.

This was two years after winning a flag, and according to all and sundry well and truly in the middle of a premiership window.

They delisted 11 players including many who had played a fair bit of senior footy the year before.

They're now back to back premiers.

Being realistic with your list is critical.

Fyfe Jnr will deliver us to the promised land

They'll have a crack in the next two years and if fall short rebuild around the following;

Current age in brackets

Hooker (26y 7m)
Hurley (24y 11m)
Daniher (21y 2m)
Carilise (23y 7m)
Heppell (23y)

Cannot wait for this kid to come on. I was stoked draft day he fell to us.

The other potential CHF option that is forgotten, but will take some miracle is Pears.
His kicking, read and movement is perfect for a forward.
But he has some time before coming back

With what we have to work with, by years end it would be interesting to see if this works
Fantasia Daniher Langford
Colyer Pears Laverde
Zaka Myers Stanton
Goddard Hurley Hibberd
Baguley Hooker Carlisle
Bellchambers Heppell Watson
Gleeson Merrett Cooney *whoever here

Then somebody does something else and wins a flag or two and everyone will say we should do that.

Every club, list and plans are different and decisions need to be made based on that not on what someone else did.

We have been building a list for some time and it's much better than it was 4 years ago.

We are basically a functioning forward line away from being a very good team (if we continue to play on quickly). If someone, maybe Fantasia, maybe J.Merrett, maybe Langford can become a good small forward things can change rapidly.

I think you have it pretty spot on here. Hope your wrong about Demspey (but dont think you are) - really like him as a player but I think we have to many half back flanker types, and the lure of $$ up north will see him go ;(

Hird will be in his last year of his contract in 2016.

Is there any chance Bomber could coach EFC again if Hird's gone or the bridges are truly burnt?
I doubt he'd come back and to be honest, I'm not sure that he should, as much as I love him.

Not as head coach, anyway.

Seriously man, do you think before you press post reply?

Gary Ayres goes all right.

What's wrong with him coaching a VFL side? will be out of the spotlight and gets to develop players for AFL which loves doing.

edit- I thought it was a fair question no need to shoot me down for it.

Dude, Gary Ayres found his level. He achieved some okay results at Geelong and Adelaide but ultimately, failed.

Bomber coached Geelong to two flags, another grand final and two other preliminary finals.

You can't compare them.
