Basically Bickley's message was that he thinks that because Adelaide have its stongest list ever, that it will only delist the compulsory 3 players.

The names he made no bones about were Clarke(retired) and Jericho, but also raised the possibility of Gibson, because he just can't get on the track consistently.

I think that Clarke and Jericho are certainties, but Gibson is very young in footy terms and a big boy to boot.

Thoughts on that one anybody??

He also went on to say that the possibility of a Meesen wanting to go home could affect who stays and who goes.

After that they showed a clip of Craig talking on this topic, and he said that it would be very difficult, but interestingly he went on to say that if a player feels that he won't be getting opportunity with the Adelaide Crows then we owe it to them to help them go elsewhere to play - a polite way of saying that we will trade IMO.

After seeing Craig talking tonight I think we will end up using 4 draft picks at year end and will get to that number via a trade or two.

If anybody else saw this what were their thoughts?? Did they see it the same way??

Hey, I'm not sure if you guys remember me as a poster, but I havn't posted in a long time, partly coz I can't watch every game, but I have been watching as many matches as possible and reading on here what I can.

Agree with you here macca23 on both points. I inferred Bickley too as implying there's no real need to change much at this point in time, therefore delist the minimum required. I can't comment on actual players to potentially be delisted as I admit my overall footy knowledge is sufficient enough to warrant it.

I think Craig, as you said, was happy to trade (more so for another draft pick than another player, of course). Whilst Craig didn't explicitly say it either, I think there was the notion that there it is just bad luck a player is traded b/c there isn't a spot for him in the team, and not b/c of underperforming, fitness etc etc. Seems to me he's also saying it is just bad luck, circumstantial and unfortunate some individuals may have to miss out a spot in the squad next year to maintain the strength of the team/list overall, if not allow the team/list to improve even further more.

It would be irresponsible to trade Gibson IMO. And even a strong last half of the season will not spare Jericho from being dumped, he’s had his chances and it’s time to go.

And I must say it's not looking good for Meesen unfortunately; I’ll be shattered. :(

do you think any of the rookies will be given another year? Or will there be 4 new spots to fill there as well?

i would think that the only one with a chance of staying on at this stage is Sugars... Elliot hasnt shown a lot down at south this year by reports.... Bonaddio has been in and out of a struggling west team.... Redden was sent away from crows training a few months ago and i dont think has returned yet...

I don't know what it will take for people to realise Elliot is a gun, and is a sure thing to stay.

Sugars has been going pretty good....been elevated once this season. :)

Elliott has just regained full fitness hung over from last year and is starting to play well. :)

Bonnadio is........well.........a nice bloke.

Redden is back to the crows as of 2 weeks ago! Has been playing some decent reserves..........?????????

The question is have they shown what is needed to be given another year?
Interesting times ahead...

Given that I don't live in Adelaide, I obviously didn't see the Bickley report. However, I would beg to differ with one of the conclusions he is reported to have reached.

Adelaide do appear to have their strongest list ever. That part I agree with. What I disagree with is his conclusion that this means Adelaide will minimise their turnover to three players.

Put simply, he who stands still gets to watch everyone else go past him.

Adelaide have a LOT of older players - 10 of our players are currently aged 28 or older. We need to be planning for their eventual retirements, that means drafting kids in preparation.

I would be VERY surprised if we have less than four delistings. My best guess would be five new draftees at the end of the year.

The obvious departures are Clarke & Jericho.
Those under threat: Skippy, Welsh, Torney.
Possible homing pigeon: Meesen.
Possible trades: Anyone who feels they're not getting enough opportunities.

I can see where Bickley is coming from with his suggestion of Gibson being delisted due to his constant injuries. However, the kid has only been on our list for two years and we don't have an abundance of young KPPs to replace him.

I agree with your principles about not standing still or you get overtaken.

Your point about the number of players of age 28 plus is also very valid. Our turnover in the next 3 to 4 years will be abnormal - certainly in quality, if not in quantity.

For those reasons I believe 4 is the very minimum that we can afford to turn over at year end, although Bickley was clear that due to the strength of our list, he thought it would be 3.

I was heartened by Craig's comments, about an obligation to keep players in the AFL system who thought they couldn't get a regular game with Adelaide, because that sounded very much like legalese talk for trade. :) As you say, that would almost certainly be for draft picks.

4 should be the very minimum IMO.

The Age
Craig's example
July 6, 2006

What is most imposing, in a sense, about Craig's "Crowbots" is that while they are producing super numbers, they are not a super group of players in the vein of Essendon 2000, Brisbane 2001-03 or Hawthorn 1988-89.

The Crows' players are not a quantum leap above the rest and their supremacy is based on a superior system, on highly organised training and playing methods, rather than the outlandish talent that marked the Hawthorn and Brisbane hegemonies.
These comments are absolutely accurate....remember this is almost the same list that veteran posters said we would take a min 5 years to regenerate the list.....the only variable has been the introdiction of Craig.

No we do not have a strong list!!!!....do not be fooled!!

We have a very good coach and strong system at the AFC

We will take our normal quota...4 draft picks and a PS (maybe depending on who's still avaialable in the main draw)

Who will go, well we can all guess....I still think S.Stevens and Skippy will depart, the former possibly traded and Hinge delisted and Clarke retired).

Queries on Griffin, Tourny (retirement) and Jericho although I think the AFC will go one more season with him.

I think we'll probably wipe the slate with all rookies ....sorry but a good draft to be looking for a full compliment of Rookies and none have done enough IMO.

 Iam absolutely sick of all the continued discussion around the go-home with Meesen....It's only CONTINUALLY raised in Adelaide
