Hard Nuts

You need hard nuts that can actually play like the Hawks, Swans and Freo have.

Hope you don't list Crowley in that list of 'hard nuts' .. Absolutely one of the most least tough players in the league, his constantly sniping and attacking players away from the ball is one of the most gutless things in football today, was absolutely delighted when Marc Murphy stood up to this thug last season, the game where I felt MM finally arrived as the captain of our club :)

Crowley is neither hard nor soft (similar to Carrots) he's there to annoy and does it well..

Love him or hate him we lost our hardest player when Robinson ran out of chances.

Very few match Robinson for hardness not just at Carlton but across the competition.

Kreuzer would be our hardest player now. Knows one way and one way only and that is to get the ball and run through anything which stands in his way. Just a competitive beast who would run through a brick wall if he had to. Hasn't played much football over the past few years so I think some people may have forgotten just how influential he can be. He may now have slimmed down a fair bit but I very much doubt that his competitive nature has dwindled.

Bell would probably be the one true midfield enforcer now that Robinson has departed but he's in a different mould. Robinson was wonderful to watch but reckless and often dumb with the way he threw his body around. Bell isn't as good a footballer as Robinson but he is smarter out on the field and knows how to execute a bump or another act of toughness far better than Robinson did.

Plenty of others including Armfield, Ellard, Curnow, Rowe etc. aren't afraid of the rough stuff and go when they have to.

Of the younger brigade, the likes of Cripps, Whiley, Holman and even Graham could well develop into enforcers and even now aren't afraid to crack in.

Smith and Walsh would be the standouts of the newest draftees with both showing over the past few years a real appetite for the contest. Both are smaller in stature but have that nugget-like physique which compliments their tenacity and willingness to put their bodies on the line and will hold them in good stead going forward.

Pound for pound Simpson would have to be one of the toughest players in the competition but he's certainly not someone who you'd look at to be a traditional 'enforcer'. Likewise Daisy is someone who well and truly pulls his weight despite having a smaller build - we may not have seen it much last year but when he's up and about he has certainly in the past shown a manic attack on the ball. Of the younger blokes Buckley is cut from a similar cloth - very slight in stature but a real mongrel and not afraid to throw his weight around both on and off the ball.

Crowley is so good at his job he even annoys posters on an internet forum.

Ludicrous that two pages in the toughest player on our list is still yet to be mentioned - Chris Judd. Anyone that thinks Robinson was/is tougher than Judd is a fool. He extracts the ball from congested situations with monotonous regularity even now.

The only two recent premiership teams I can think of that were overtly aggressive were Port '04 and Hawthorn '08 (maybe the great Brisbane team could be included as well). When you think of Sydney, Geelong or Hawthorn now, it's an overall team expectation to do whatever is required without being stupid. Football has moved past that stage as frees will be plucked and they'll be costly.

The toughest thing is - and always has been - to win the football.

Pickett was 'see ball, get ball', and whoever happened to be in the way, good luck.
Except when he steps over the ball to hit blokes who are bent over to pick it up. They are unprotected and he hit them high, nothing tough about that.

I wish each and every one of North's players were as hard and as brave as Carlton's. :p
Good luck keeping Waite away from the tribunal now he is immersed in your clubs kulcha.

Without a doubt!

And Simmo...

Simmo is tuff...proper tuff...even if that massive farkstik Mooney doesn't think so...
Goes where he shouldn't, for the sake of the team, absolutely courageous ..... the best kind of tough.

Throw in the fact he weights about the same as most other players' biceps...proper tuff...
He's put on weight?

FMD, about time he gained a few kilos.

One that might not be so obvious. Chris Yarran has definetly gotten a lot harder goes when it's his turn and it happy to get in the oppositions face. Also love the roadrunner stuff has pace that intimidates teams and makes there quicker players look silly ie Varcoe. :)

This may seem like an odd choice to some, but in my opinion, Kade Simpson is the toughest player on our list ATM, even though he is as thin as a rake.

I much prefer the displays of toughness that Simmo gives in week in, week out, then the often stupid kamikaze style toughness that Robbo dished out, which often resulting in him getting silly suspensions or giving away crucial free kicks, ditto Waite.

Absolute gem is our Simmo, gives no thought to his own physical safety on the field, plus i love his work with down syndrome kids as well. Probably is in my all time favourite top 5 players at Carlton now :)

I disagree, the ridiculous hits backed up by consistent hardness at the ball stick in the oppositions head and can make young/soft players uneasy. Robbos hardness is a loss, hopefully clem reaches Byron Pickett levels.

Simmo has talent and courage, but if you were a small forward and got the choice of lining up on kade or Pickett, who would you choose?

I remember that nice story about Yaz a few years ago when he was visiting South Africa as part of some kind of AFL development initiative. I think Yaz was still only about 19 at the time.
He got bailed up by one of the local thugs who, realizing Chris was a foreigner assumed he'd be a soft target and loaded. Yaz decked the would-be mugger faster than you can say "right uppercut". They reckon Yaz can look after himself alright!
