Port Adelaide defender Damien Hardwick has had knee surgery and his pre-season training program has been interrupted for up to four weeks.
Hardwick had a cartilage trimmed in his right knee on Tuesday.
The knee was encased in a heavy bandage when he watched Port’s first full training session – a 2.2-kilometre time trial – in the North Adelaide parklands on Wednesday.
Port coach Mark Williams said of Hardwick: “He’s been doing a lot of training by himself and got himself in really good condition. But his cartilage came up sore so he had an operation on it yesterday.
“It sets him back about three or four weeks. But it’s better at this time of the year than during the season.”
Hardwick, 31, also had arthroscopic knee surgery this time last year and made a late start to Port’s pre-season training. But he recovered satisfactorily and, despite an occasional hamstring problem, played 20 of the Power’s 25 AFL matches to lift his tally to 193 – 40 with Port in 2002-2003 after 153 with Essendon from 1994-2001.
The man is too old this is his last season and i think we should have gotten rid fo him at the end of 2003. He is too slow and he gets hurt to much.
