but we never manned up from the backline....there was no urgency to get close to them. we tried to zone of and then react but they were killing us on the spread. coaches instructions?
Personally I thought the loose men in their forwardk line was more caused by their mids getting into their forward 50 first and being more willing to work harder. Yep, their forward line took the points over our backs - it was a bad week for Morris to get suspended - but what freo did tonight is what they always do to be a great side, you will never dismantle their system all together as they are so well trained and discipline - you just hope you can get enough of you game right to beat them. I thought or the most part we did, but á couple o players if ours who should have been able to prove the difference, did nothing.

With sandilands, Pav and Kepler out - we should have won. But jack and Brett's meek performance even upped that ledger. Morris bing suspended hurt as a lot too.

In short, discipline..... Again, and still

FFS 2 weeks ago we're 3-0 and there was barely a thing being said about Dimmas coaching. 2 weeks later and the knives are starting to come out.
Flow on effect from "Lets bring in player x for player etc. Lets see what player y has got..". Same deal, doesn't change.

People want to see change but don't want to make changes themselves. ;)

basically Freo ran harder, didnt turn the ball over as much, actually spread when they had the ball and were more composed in the pressure situations. What irks me is when the game is to be won after White kicks the goal, we have Edwards and Vlastuin in the centre square. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. It happened against GC last year and it bit us on the ar$e again tonght. Time for Cotch, Lids, Dusty and Jackson to pull rank and say F* off, we're the best clearers in the team, we finish the game in the middle.

Oh, and a big difference between:

"Hardwick out coaches again" and
"Hardwick out coached again"

..but you're just slamming away at your keyboard.

I know it has been touched on briefly but I don't see Dimma as the problem here. I honestly believe we have a dumb football side, plain and simple. It was not only evident deep in the last quarter but throughout the whole match. Getting defensive side on your opponent, pushing back etc. are the very basics of football that should be well known to these players earning a bucket load of cash.

Calm down. Lyons game is destroying football. Dimma coached well tonight. we played short when we had too. played on the spread only when definitely on (unless your alex rance - not a crack at him btw) Make no mistake we were the better side tonight. The rare occasion when the best side doesn't win. We nearly have the cattle to defeat these boring sides.

To be honest i feel for a few highly talented Freo players who will never win the great plaudits from playing under a genuinely exciting coach like Hardwick. Freo can win as many sad games as they like but they wont win a premiership that way. Not with the way the game is evolving.

Checklist for next year:
• Monster forward.
• Better backman than Rance
• A couple more gun mids

Jackson needs to go
Grigg needs to go

Christ almighty.

If I were a mod, people like you would be banned just for being stupid.

I like Dimma, but I'm starting to lose some faith in him.

His coaching is predictable, and he's slow to make changes. We keep losing close matches, which ultimately the coach is responsible if it keeps happening all the time. We hit the front with 90 sec and we did not flood the back line...wtf  that's school boy stuff.

We always seem to concede easy late goals to lose close games. Good teams know how to hang on to these leads.

Also, really disappointed in Lids and Reiwoldt. Jack just points, whinges and complains all the time and blames his team mates and umpires. He's totally hopeless when the ball hits the ground. What is his role the year? It's hard to tell.

Rance looks lost atm and tonight his decision making was terrible. Cloke must have knocked the stuffing out of him. Too clumsy, awkward and gives away too many frees.

Jackson was bloody good tonight, kept Mundy to 17 touches and got 21 himself, took a clutch mark late, thought he was one of our leaders, along with Cotch and Maric that gave everything.

I've never understood why more coaches don't push back 2 loose me in defense, boring as bat shit to watch but bloody effective at times.

Not sure why but we continued to bomb it long after quarter time and Freo's defenders kept cutting them off. It happened last year and it happened tonight. We need to run and carry or try and draw them in and hit them on the counter when the space opens up. McPharlin, Johnson, Ibbotson and co racked up easy marks because we kept bombing it.

This is where your delusion is showing. Do you really think that the coaches want this? The fact is is the players are at fault and all this blaming on coaching is down right rubbish. you can lead a horse to water....

ffs I'm done for the night after reading this bullshit

It was a tight contest all night where we had massive pressure against us throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters but managed to pull it back our way through some very good football, the lead of 14 points by Freo would be lead of 30 points against any other team yet we came back and got the lead, that's bloody brilliant by the boys and very good coaching. The end result, we take the mark in the final second and slot the goal, we win and this conversation never happened.

Maybe it was just because I was there but my comments to WATIGE were geez I wish I wasn't a supporter of either of these clubs right now because this is a cracker of a game, and it was, I'll definitely be watching it again (umpires shmumpires).

Not sure Morris being out hurt us that much given the mood the umpires were in last night.

anyone who thinks hardwick not sending/telling some of his forwards down back clearly dont have a clue. Its hardwicks job to get the runners to go down to the forward like and say "jack, vickery, head down to the backline to flood it"

amateur coaching

rubbish. its up to the players since a restart take 1 minute. where was the on field ledership? The fact is the start was ok but the restart in the fwd 50 for the dockers was a luck of the draw that we failed to smother.

This is not a coaching issue but player issue.

It's a fine line b/w pleasure & pain and unfortunately for the Tigers it usually ends in pain - esp. close games.

For 30 years we've dug a big hole for ourselves, and now it's proving hard to climb out of it.

Destroying football.

It's trench warfare, if you're not up for a contest don't come. It's finals football bought into the season proper.

You have to climb over our blokes, clawing at you all the way, anyone who beats Freo has to earn it. And I love it.

Is that your 20th post in dire defense of Hardwick just tonight, flea? You're busier than your namesake. ;)

Let me ask you a question, mate. When a club loses games it should win too often, does the board sack the players, or the coach? Blame the players as much as you like (quite a few deserved a roast tonight), but it won't help Hardwick when the time comes.

------------------------------------------------

Freo were a tactical rabble under Harvey. People can say what they like about Lyon's style of game or his personality, but his sides are always well drilled and well coached as a result. When they hit the front their forwards ran back into defense and our defenders just looked around at each other like stunned mullets, until Ellis of all players took the initiative and ran forward. Clearly none of the defenders had ever been given any advice about what to do in this situation.

I nearly snorted my nose clean off my face when I was reading comments defending Hardwick's lack of flood, on the basis that it took too long to get a message to the players from the box. Did Ross Lyon's players need a message from the box to flood back, or had they already been well drilled in what to do? Are Freo's - and St. Kilda's for that matter - players really just way more intelligent than ours? I don't believe that for a second.

The real issue is not whether Hardwick taught this or that (many of them things I learned in primary school football), but whether or not it has sunk in. WTF else matters?

The set up on that last defensive play we completely blew IS coaching, it wouldn't happen in a Ross Lyon side, it's been happening to the SAME PLAYERS for years under Hardwick.

I will say one thing for him though, it's good he's finally woken up to playing Jackson as a pure tagger. His shut-down on Fyfe (switching from Mundy, who he started on for some bizarre reason known only to our coaches) from the 2nd quarter onwards was very important to keeping us in the game.

Ultimately, having just lost to two sides who were missing key stars and vulnerable, we've blown a golden opportunity to really set up our season by being 5-0. People can blame all kinds of things for that, but to me, significantly more blame lies with Hardwick than anything else you could point your finger at. We had Freo on the ropes in terms of the personnel they were missing, just like Collingwood last week, but we again lacked the brains in the box to make full use of our advantage.

If we beat Geelong next week, and I think we will. As its not at that afl allowed bullshlt home ground of theirs, I cannot wait to see how fickle this thread will look, it's round 5, we are 3-2, blaming Dima because we didn't get goal side and flood in the last 90 seconds is nonsensical and ridiculous, if ballantyne doesn't kick a goal there, everyone chants that Dima out coached him, and that we won another close one. Hardly his fault, split second decisions, I admired that he stuck with it tonight, Christ we were 14 down with 10 left, and he stuck with it, and it put us in front. You blokes sound like essendon fans with knights. Blame the players, they (along with the woeful umpiring) are the reason we aren't 4-1.

3-2, pull your heads in, we're going along okay thanks.

heat needs to be finally turned up on him.
he is lyons bitch every time.
basic Dimma: you stack the backline and you put players on the defensive side of throw ins.

I am sick of losing games we could win. nothing has changed.
it is time to seriously look at his coaching.

But the thread title implies he out coached Lyon?

You'd think we are 0-5 and just lost our 5th by over 15 goals for the 3rd consecutive week...
