At the end of the day Wallace took us to (from 16th) 12th, 9th, 16th, 9th and 15th. You can go on and on about the reasons behind it, and what a genius tactician and developer he was, but that series of results is not acceptable. I'm not leaving the club out of this either, I'm bloody glad we've got Benny at the helm and a new team of coaches / admin and new focus. All of these things contributed to the poor results from '05-'09, including Wallace.

So far DH has arguably made a couple of mistakes, but we should give him the time to learn from them. If we get to the end of next year and he's still making what you regard as mistakes then is the time to question his abilities.

Personally I think it takes a year for any new experienced employee to become good at their job, and up to two years for an inexperienced one. I think DH fits into the second category and I saw signs toward the end of this year he is now coming good as a coach. Points in case:
  • Binging Tuck in - essentially acknowledging the mistake (IMHO) of leaving him out.
  • Flying up earlier for the Gold Coast game, after learning from the Port game.
  • Firing up at the players on field for the first time.

So far he's taken us (from 15th) to 15th and then 12th. Another year will IMO show us if he's started to properly learn his trade.

The biggest problem was we were so under-resourced. Question is whose fault is that? Club for not having money or Wallace for taking all the money we had. With recruiters we have now being full-time and all of a sudden 2004 we end up with Deledio, Franklin, Rosa, Van Berlo, LeCras, Maric, Knights and then look at the team we would have now. Remembering we had Johnson, Brown, Coughlan, Richo, Simmonds, Bowden's, Krak. Unfortunately we didnt have 1 full-time recruiter and rest is history now.

I saw Hardwick at Wet n Wild Theme Park on the Gold Coast Saturday. Was enjoying the waterslides etc.

He looked very happy/relaxed with his daughters. Was wearing a Kooga wet shirt haha.

A bit like Sheedy, Wallace could (probably still can if the hunger was/is there) coach.

Also like Sheedy, Wallace could not run a football dept on his lonesome or with shoestring help, and made terrible, terrible decisions on the list.
Certainly both being under-resourced had something to do with it, but probably also a fair part of it was their own faults & mistakes.
Also with Sheedy, both pushed their clubs into big re-thinks of football dept spend - both successors were paid much less with the 'savings' going into increased numbers & quality of support staff (fitness, recruiting, asst's, list management etc)

I'm not so sure it's the coach that is the really important figure at a club these days, for me Benny is going to be the best thing that has happened to the Tigers, very few clubs win flags unless they are well resourced, so it begins there, then the CEO needs to help pick a decent coach or put the correct people in place to do so, if you have the cash the coach can almost be secondary, look at the figure head that Hird is at Essendon, he could be the worst coach in the world, but as long as he can manage his assistants he will do fine, especially when one of them is a very recent premiership coach.

None of our previous coaches had a chance, we had no resources and back in the eighties you would be sacked even if you did a reasonable job, by the nineties and naughties we were virtually broke and the money we did have wasn't being put where it was needed, lets be grateful that Benny was not only a great player for the Tigers but he has a good head on his shoulders and wants the Tigers to succeed, if we can raise the dollars to clear our debt and raise our footy dept. spending up to the top clubs, then I think Dimma is just the right coach to finish the job off, he is passionate and knows how to win.
Still a bit more patience needed but the future is looking pretty good, this has to be the best core of young players we have had since the late sixties and the best thing is they all want to play and win for the Tigers, lets hope we can repeat those glory days.

Go Tigers!
