YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

We're back!!!
haydo169 has been ever so kind to put out the 2017 lists, so lets not waste any time in getting a story together.

The Tigers,
Coming off a dismal 2016 season where expectations amongst the footy world were for a top 4 finish.
Dimmas men, could only muster 8 wins and sat well down the ladder in 13th spot.

There were calls for a board overhaul
rmmnno.jpg

Focus on Footy failed to take hold.
publically airing what they were out to change, the current board, did what anyone who wants to live would do and steal their ideas and make them theirs.

Niel Balme walked out on the Pies and joined the ranks.

Hardwick is now faced with a do or die season ahead of him.
Although 2 seasons left to run, Its industry feeling that a failure to fire this year will see him out of Punt road quicker than Indian curry out your bum.

Strap in for a long season and see if the Tigers can be there come September.

In a terrible state of events for the Tigers outfit, Shai Bolton, Corey Ellis and Oleg Marcov all received injuries during the teams final training session ahead of their first JLT game against Sydney.
After an Injury free pre-season the Tigers were looking to go into the JLT with a full squad to choose from.
Shai Bolton will be sidelined for 4 weeks with an AC joint injury, Corey Ellis will miss 3 weeks with an Achilles along with Oleg Marcov suffering the same Achilles strain and also out for 3 weeks.

This could rule all 3 players out the JLT series competition and will heavily jeopardise their chances for selection ahead of round 1.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has laughed off criticism that the Tigers outfit will fail to fire this season, despite his side losing to Sydney by 47 points in the first JLT series game.

"It's the first game of the year and not even one that holds any impact on the season. Yeah, we were beaten today, but we're trying to find out who we are and what will work best for us when the season proper actually comes in to play"

Tigers midfielder Anthony Miles suffered a broken leg midway during the first quarter, leaving the Tigers one down very early in the game. Sydney capitalised from then on and had a healthy 47 point lead at half-time. Hardwick refused to acknowledge that as an excuse for the loss.

"We won a lot of the stat count, but we didn't score enough. We finished the game strongly and fatigue wasn't a real issue. His loss hurts, don't get me wrong. I think he's out now for 7 or 8 weeks, but that wasn't the straw to break the camels back."

The Tigers would come back in the third to reduce the margin to 34 after Sydney failed to goal with some poor kicking costing them chances. The final term was a lot more contested with defensives efforts of both sides lifting. Sydney though, staying on top pushed the margin back out to 47 points at the final siren. The dominance of Sydneys midfielders on full display as they created +40 inside 50's with the tackle count also skewed to their advantage +16

"We both scored at 41% from our forward entries. What hurt us, is we allowed them to go inside to easily, where we struggled to create opportunities forward of centre. Things we will continue to work on as we head towards round 1."

David Astbury has suffered an AC joint injury during Wednesday's training session. Just a couple of weeks prior to the opening round.
He's expected to miss 5 weeks and could be available in round 3 where the Tigers will take on Melbourne at the MCG.
It's a bit of a setback for the Tigers, who defensively aren't that deep.
Richmond will now need to turn to the likes of Nathan Broad, Jake Batchelor or Ryan Garthwaite who will no doubt get called upon in Astbury's absence.

Round 1 is upon us as the Tigers and Adelaide face off on Saturday at the Adelaide oval.
The last time these two sides met was back in round 3 April 9th at Etihad Stadium.

The Tigers were never really in the contest on the scoreboard with the Tigers down by 47 points at 3 quarter time. Richmond would go on to reduce that final margin down to 36 at the final siren but the game was over well before then.

Taylor Walker, Eddie Betts and Richard Douglas all picking up 3 majors for Adelaide really stretched the Tigers back 6. The scoring efficiency of 57% a telling tale of how accurate they can be when on song. Throw A firing Josh Jenkins into the mix and it's hard to see the Tigers being able to slow the scoring of Adelaide.

Sam Lloyd the only firing forward the Tigers was able to pick up 3 goals of his own, Jack Riewoldt could only score 1 whilst Tyrone Vickery (no longer at the club) picked up 2. The Tigers had to work more to score majors, with an average 12 possessions more required for each goal scored. Putting a strain on the midfield and fitness of their players.

Richard Douglas is out Injured for the best part of the season with a PCL injury for Adelaide
Anthony Miles and David Astbury are missing for the Tigers.

WHO WINS

Adelaide - Their forwards are going to be strong for a lacking Tigers Defense - Expect Rance to run off his feet - Eddie to kick a bag
Adelaide by at least 6 goals

THE ONLY HOPE

Richmond will need to dominate the midfield and get a return for that on the scoreboard to have any hope of winning.
They need to improve there inside 50 count and scoring efficiency. A tough task given how poor they've been at this during the pre-season competition.

MATCH REPORT

Q1

A sensational start to the match by the Adelaide Crows, Charlie Cameron getting the honours of kicking the first major, Matt Crouch would follow just minutes later and then the Eddie Betts showed got underway. Eddie bagging 3 goals in a row to stun the Tigers and put the Crows 30 points up very early in the game.
Richmond responded late in the quarter and took over the control of the match. Josh Caddy kicking his first goal for the Tigers along with Ben Lennon and Sam Lloyd giving the Tigers the last 3 goals of the term.
Adelaide in control with a 15 point lead.

Q2
The second Term started with tragedy for the Tigers, Jayden Short who at the time was Richmond leading possession getter with 13 was taken from the ground hurt. It would be later known that he suffered a broken ankle in a collision and would take no further part in the game.
Adelaide turned the screws during the second term with immense forward pressure - their midfield working so well together had the Tigers running around in circles unable to touch the ball. They added another 4 goals before Shaun Hampson got one for the Tigers after a free kick in the marking contest. All one-way traffic as the Crows is enjoying this one. Up by 31 at the main break.

2u5ge4g.jpg

Jayden Short with possession late in the first quarter

Q3
It was a better contested quarter by Richmond in the third. Adelaide losing some of their free-flowing run and carry and scoring was more difficult, However, the Crows midfield was still punching way above the Tigers and created opportunities to further extend their lead. Roary Sloane and Mat Crouch doing the most damage as the Tigers couldn't contain their impact. Another 3 goal to 1 quarter has the Crows up by 41 and looking certain winners.

Q4
The final term was all built around the way Adelaide wanted to play, They controlled the ball and kept the Tigers goalless for the final quarter. In a display that would please coach Don Pyke, they added another 3 goals to their tally to run away match winners by 58 points.
In a game where Adelaide was expected to win, they accounted for a poor Tigers side and get their 2017 season underway with a good win.

*EDIT - Messed up Fantasy Scoring for Adelaide* CORRECTED

POST MATCH PRESS CONFERENCE

2hzldt1.jpg

Damien, Not the start to the season you would have liked. Adelaide were always favourites, but were you expecting to be outplayed this badly?
"Certainly not. Don't get me wrong, Adelaide is a very good football side and that was on show again today. They were always going to be hard to beat. It was a pretty poor showing by us and we're a much better football side than the one out there today. We've got some things to work on and we'll be looking to address some of those this week."

Your scoring efficiency was pretty poor, Going at 33% for the game. What do you do to turn that around ahead of next week?
"Kick Straighter. (haha) I shouldn't laugh, though our performance was pretty laughable for some. I don't want to make excuses, but it's early in the season. We have 21 games ahead of us to get things right. We need to have a look at our forward options and find the players who get us results on the board. Can we address that before next week? I'm not sure."

Where do you think Adelaide got on top of you? Were you defensively poor or was Adelaides midfield too strong?
"There are a few things we could look at try and point fingers, but it was a combination of those that let us down.
They averaged 20 disposals per goal with 56 inside 50's, Their scoring accuracy was 65%, We had 30 rebound 50's.
The midfield let us down in some areas as did the defence. We'll look at our personnel and structures going forward and try to tighten things up.
But in saying that, We have to get better at going forward and creating goals of our own. We shot at 33% as you said earlier, averaging 59 disposals to score a goal. Nowhere near good enough."

"Thanks guys"

ROUND 9 DOMAIN STADIUM SAT MAY 21st

167til0.jpg

Richmond ran out comfortable winners by 38 points.
The first quarter was closely contested with the Tigers leading by 8 points.
A good second quarter setting up the side for the win as they went on to lead by 31 at the main break.
Fremantle unable to wrestle back ascendency finished off with a quiet final quarter performance.

Hayden Ballantyne with 3 goals for Fremantle kicking half the sides score was a standout up forward. Lachie Neale arguably best on ground with a good day out for the Fantasy players.

Trent Cotchin leading the way for the Tigers had one of his better games of the season
Dustin Martin and Shaun Grigg also picking up a good share of the ball and Fantasy point scores.

WHO WINS?

It's a bit of a coin toss
Both sides are pretty evenly rated. Aaron Sandilands in the Ruck will probably be able to dominate the hit outs.
Fremantle could get the upper hand here and first use of the ball is a definite advantage.
Richmond should have the better forward structure, but the Dockers defence has been decent against them in previous outings.
Alex Rance should like it down back with the Pav retiring and no Ballantyne to stir up trouble as he's out injured. Cam McCarthy is unknown after a seasons break but the Tigers should be able to stay on top and control things down back.

We're tipping the Tigers to get it done at home but it's probably going to be close

Margin - less than 12 points

THE ONLY HOPE

The Midfield.
The game is going to be won or lost with whoever can get the upper hand.

MATCH DAY

21mdafn.jpg

Q1
Fremantle got out of the blocks very quickly and the ball was constantly going inside 50 early.
The wet and gusty conditions playing havoc at the Dockers end as they couldn't kick a major, with 4 attempts pushing wide for minor scores. Richmond slowly worked their way back into the match from there and pushed into their forward half. Garrick Ibbotson having an outstanding opening quarter would not let the Tigers get to goal easily. Stephen Hill would open the Dockers goal tally before Richmond would come on with Josh Caddy bagging back to backs for the Tigers.

Fremantle lamenting wasted chances are trailing by 4 points at the first break.

Q2
Fremantle would come out in a similar fashion to the first term having all the play early and looking dangerous. This time around rewarding the effort as Walters got his first goal. Josh Caddy would pop again for Richmond getting his 3rd goal to restore the Tigers lead. Play slowed up until stoppage time when it picked up a few gears. Nat Fyfe would goal to give Fremantle the lead, but a late surge by Richmond snagging 2 of their own with Riewoldt and First gamer Dan Butler hitting the scoreboard.

Tight and scrappy, Richmond lead by 9 points at halftime.

2uemsuh.jpg

Josh Caddy Celebrating his third goal of the game

Q3

14 minutes of play before the first goal was kicked, Jack Riewoldt getting his second to extend the Tigers lead. Damien Hardwick trying to take Garrick Ibbotson out of the game, sent his forward to go down back. But when your on song you can't be stopped and Ibbotson turned that move into a goal of his own to get Fremantle back within 9. Oleg Markov getting his second career goal late in the quarter. It looked as if that was where the term would end but Nat Fyfe had other ideas firing one off for Fremantle. Richmond responding just as quick as Jacob Townsend picked up his first of the year to end the quarter.

Richmond with a 13 point buffer heading into the final term.

Q4

A captain's goal to Trent Cotchin got the Tigers up and about as the lead opened up to it's biggest margin of 19 points. Nat Fyfe and Lachie Weller lifted gears for Fremantle as they picked apart the Tigers midfield trying to get Fremantle back in the game. David Mundy would hit the scoreboard after a relatively quiet outing. When Nat Fyfe hit Walter laces out as the Dockers got back to back goals and they were just 7 points behind with less than 5 minutes to go.
Fremantle trying to get inside 50 couldn't hit a target as Richmond went wide to go all the way as Jack Graham picked up his first career goal giving the Tigers a win and 4 points.

INTERVIEW

2hzldt1.jpg

Damien, Nice to pick up the win this week. How did you feel the game went?

"It was good to get the 4 points. We always thought we were in a good position to win this week.

It was tough out there. Conditions weren't favourable for either side and we really had to work hard to score.
We only had 2 more scoring shots but we went at 62% to their 50%. That's where the game was won today."

You only had 51 handballs for the match. Was that a tactic against Fremantle or the way you're looking to play?

"It was more the conditions of the ground than anything else. Wet and windy. Old school type of play where the main aim is to just get the ball going forward. Probably wasn't pretty to watch, but I'm more interested in getting the 4 points than how we look."

You still having to work a lot harder for your goals. 42 disposals per goal, giving away 12 more than Fremantle. Does this worry you?

"It does. We spend more energy trying to create scoring chances than our opposition. That also tends to lend itself towards suggesting we're not good enough defensively either. I'm working on trying to establish if it's a coaching thing or a personnel issue. It's something we need to clean up and narrow down. I'd much like it the other way around with us needed fewer possessions to score. We took a lot of marks, +41 I think. It's just what we tend to do with the next kick going forward and finding a target inside 50 that's letting us down a bit."

"Thank guys"

ROUND 5 2016 MCG APRIL 24

24111z9.jpg

LAST TIME THEY MET

The Demons came away with back to back wins for the first time in 5 years. Big Max Gawn was dominating the Richmond big men racking up 102 DT points by
halftime. The Tigers got back to within 16 points at 3 quarter time but fell away and eventually lost by 33.
A brain fade by Alex Rance as he sunk his forearm into the back of Jack Watts head gave him a certain holiday for round 6. While Damien Hardwick declared the Tigers would find answers to his side's poor form quite quickly in his post-match conference.

21mul9i.jpg

Alex Rance will be hoping he can stay composed this week

BEST PERFORMERS:

Melbourne: Gawn, Viney, Tyson, Salem, Kent, Jones, Garlett
Richmond: Cotchin, Miles, Riewoldt, Edwards

WHO WINS

The Demons are almost certain favourites. They picked up a nice win over Sydney last week and look to be quite settled under new coach Simon Goodwin. Max Gawn will provide the Tigers with plenty of headaches and should have a good day out. Melbourne will be missing Nathan Jones who is out with a quad strain but Melbourne shouldn't feel the pinch by his absence. Defensively. the Tigers have been good, but are finding it tough to score. Josh Caddy leading the club's goal tally early into the season. Jack Riewoldt with just two goals to his name.

MARGIN: 30+ in favour of Melbourne

THE ONLY HOPE

If… The Tigers can control the midfield and somehow get their key forwards to fire. They may pose a chance of an upset but it won’t be easy.

MATCH DAY

Q1

A frantic start to the contest with both sides using the pill as if it was a hot potato. Quick kicks and fast handballs had both teams running on their toes expelling a high amount of energy. Melbourne able to do the better part through the middle couldn’t find an avenue to goal despite 3 very quick attempts early. It would take 15 minutes for the matches first goal. Richmond stringing a chain of passes from the Demons backline, Nick Vlastuin sold some candy and found Sam Lloyd with room to open the Tigers account. Sam Lloyd on the end of a spear pass from Rioli nailed the Tigers second just a few minutes later as the Tigers started to look a bit more settled. The Tigers pushed it to 3 straight within a blink of their second goal as Ryan Garthwaite kicked his first career goal being pinch hit in the forward half. The Demons had another few chances to score but the Richmond defence was showing its strength early and forced another couple of behinds increasing the Demons tally to 6 in the first quarter. Josh Caddy bending one back from the boundary made it 4 straight to the Tigers as we entered stoppage time.

Richmond up by 18 points at the first break.

Q2

Sam Lloyd picked up his 3rd goal 2 minutes into the second quarter pushing the Tiger lead out to 24 points. Max Gawn had an opportunity get the Dee’s on the board but missed. Jack Watts got some separation from Alex Rance to take a nice grab. He lined up and kicked truly to get Melbourne’s first goal of the match. Melbourne getting back to back goals as Jesse Hogan caught David Astbury in a great tackle and was rewarded. Melbourne starting to find their way into the match. Another free kick gave Melbourne their 3rd as Dean Kent took the honours and the margin was narrowed down to just 5 points in a matter of minutes. Another series of attacks by the Demons without a major, whittled the margin down to 0 with both sides locked on 30 points. Richmond having trouble clearing the defensive half for the first time of the match. After an immense amount of pressure the Tigers created a great clearing run from deep in defence gifting Sam Lloyd his 4th goal of the match and the Tigers back the lead late in the quarter.

Richmond leading by 7 at the main break.

104g2tt.jpg

Jack Watts and Jesse Hogan working hard to get Melbourne back in the contest.

Q3

Jesse Hogan wasted no time getting Melbourne back to within 1 point as the Dee’s started the second half with a bit of dash. Brandon Ellis gifted Melbourne another goal with a blatant push in the back right in front of the umpire. Jesse Hogan going back and Giving the Dee’s the lead with his 3rd of the day. Melbourne continued to push forward but couldn’t find a major as their accuracy is letting them down with 12 missed opportunities so far. Richmond working hard to contain the Demons attack found another avenue to goal from defence as Sam Lloyd kicked his 5th to keep the Tigers in touch. Jordan Lewis took a screamer on the head of Oleg Markov, went back and slotted it through to keep the Tigers at arm’s length as we neared stoppage time. Melbourne getting the next centre clearance, Dom Tyson spotting up Jack Watts for his second pushing the Demons lead out a bit further. The Tigers in a bit of a slump late in the quarter allowed Melbourne to kick a 3rd unanswered goal as Jesse Hogan strolled into an empty square to get his 4th and push the lead out 16 points. The Tigers, with a couple of late chances. Let them go begging as they kicked 6 behinds for just the one goal in the quarter to trail into the final change.

Melbourne leading by 14

Q4

It took just 50 seconds for the Tigers to respond in the final term. Josh Caddy getting his second and giving the Tigers the best possible start to win the match. Jake Spencer got his first for Melbourne after 3 attempts, putting the lead back out to 15 points. Both sides trying desperately to make the game theirs but couldn’t make the most of their chances as a palpable 15 minutes of play ensued. Ryan Garthwaite finally breaking the series of behinds to get the Tigers back within 9 points with under 10 minutes left to play. Josh Caddy kicked his third goal for Richmond to get it back to just 2 points on the stroke of the 20th minute. Watts had a chance to almost seal it but sprayed it wide. Alex Rance was deemed to have chopped the arms of Jesse Hogan who took his time to put it through the middle. Melbourne back out by 9 points. Nathan Drummond crumbs a spilled mark by Ryan Garthwaite to snap and goal for Richmond bringing the margin back to just 3 points deep in stoppage time. A clearing kick into Melbourne’s forward fifty on the bounce chewed up enough time off the clock as the siren sounded with Melbourne taking out a close 3 point victory.

INTERVIEW

kn3hl.jpg

How much does this loss hurt? Given Melbourne were almost guaranteed to be clear winners?

“It’s hard to measure. On the one hand I’m proud we were able to get to a point where we could win the game when we weren’t expected to get close. On the other, you rue that chance because you got so close but couldn’t make it stick.
There’s positives and negatives from this match. Our defensive unit is performing well, we’ve been able to score and our efficiency was pretty good early in the match. The midfield let us down and we let them take control on the outside early on and took a while to shut that down. Plenty of things to work on and be pleased with.”

You seemed to struggle in the midfield with Cotchin and Martin both having poor games. Did that make it harder to try and grind out a win?

“Of course it does! They weren’t great today, but I’d probably throw Jack Riewoldts name amongst that list also.
8 touches for him and he didn’t hit the scoreboard. Three rounds in and he has only 2 goals. Not what you want from your key forward.
Cotchin had a bad day out, 7 disposals and the only highlight I guess was his 5 tackles. We tried to get him out of the middle at stages but he wasn’t settled anywhere on the ground. Dusty was the same in the middle. Just couldn’t get near it. He picked up a bit out on the wing and forward flank but that’s not where we need him to play. Hopefully these are just short term issues and their form can turn around quickly.”

David Astbury had some kind of game for you down back. How did you find his performance?

“He had to do a lot of work. With the lack of midfield presence the ball was going inside their forward half a fair bit. He used the ball well, most disposals went to the right spot on the ground which helped our backline get repositioned. I thought almost all of our defenders played well today. Taylor Hunt was good, Oleg Markov held his own, Dylan Grimes backed up his previous work. Rance was a bit down but still did some good things. Our defensive unit is fairly effective, we just need to clean up those other areas and take some pressure off them.”

The free kick count was skewed in Melbournes favour 24 to 8. Do you feel you were unfairly adjudicated in this match?

“We know we can’t talk badly about the umpiring. It’s just part of the game. You take it on the chin and move forward. Most of them were warranted I thought and Melbourne didn’t make too many mistakes. We had a couple of players doing silly things out there. Houli gave away 5 frees during the game, Ellis couldn’t had made that push in the back any more obvious. That cost us a goal. We probably gave up 3 or 4 in the end to stupid free kicks. If it’s there the umpires will pay it. I don’t have a problem with that. We’ll address our performance during the week and try to be more disciplined going forward.”

Did those goals from free kicks cost you the game?

“It didn’t help, but I think we were lucky to be within an arm’s reach of winning anyway.
Their scoring efficiency was just 33%. They had 8 more total shots and went inside 50 26 more times.
We can sit here and say, that if you take those goals away, we win by almost 20 points. But you could also say, if they hit half of those 12 to 15 shots they missed, it would have been a blowout. You can’t really dwell on what ifs.”

Thanks.

ROUND 23 - AUG 27 - SCG

The Sydney Swans juggernaut steamed into the finals at full tilt after seizing top spot with a 113-point decimation of Richmond at the SCG.
Securing the clubs third Minor Premiership since shifting to South Melbourne in 1982, The Swans produced a thunderous 25-goal display against a Tigers side whos pride took the most fearful pounding of all at the end of a year to forget.

BEST PERFORMERS

Sydney Swans: Franklin, Kennedy, Lloyd, Rampe, McGlynn, Mitchell, Grundy, Jack, Hannebery, Heeney
Richmond: Cotchin, Hunt, Martin

2lo66pv.jpg

An end to a very disappointing 2016 season for the Richmond Football Club

WHO WINS THIS WEEK

Both sides are a little down on form with Sydney and Richmond picking up their only win against Fremantle so far in 2017.
Sydney has lost Luke Parker, Josh Kennedy and Sam Ried and will be hurting by the loss of 2 of their top 5 players (arguably) missing from the midfield. Lance Franklin has the class to make the game something special and even with a weakened side they will be a test for a Richmond outfit still trying to find its legs. Sydney should be too good for the Tigers but their form suggest they are vulnerable

MARGIN
Sydney on song it should be 60+, but were tipping 25 or less.

THE ONLY HOPE

The Loss of Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker seriously upsets the Swans midfield balance and the Tigers could potentially run rampant around the ball. They still need to be good enough to turn that into scoring chances, which is something still missing from their side currently.

MATCH DAY

Q1

Tough conditions at the SCG with blustery winds and thunderstorms forecast for the match. Those tough conditions translated to it being tough out the field as the opening term was scrappy and low scoring. Jarrad McVeigh getting the opening goal for the Swans inside the first five minutes of play before a lull in scoring but plenty of congested play. Sydney suffered a bit of a set back with Jake Lloyd and Zac Jones both coming from the field minutes within each other clutching their wrists. Seriously impacting the Swans rotation. Richmond would push on and looked dangerous in patches but couldn’t translate that on the scoreboard as the goals beckoned. Tom Papley getting the second and last goal of the term for the Swans to nullify the Tigers attempts who had to settle for just 4 behinds to end the quarter.
Sydney leading by 9 points.

2iql6j4.jpg
ev6mw0.jpg

Jake Lloyd _____________________Zac Jones
Sydney down by 2 rotations as niether player would return to take the field

Q2

30 seconds into the second term and Richmond were presented with an injury blow. Star recruit Dion Prestia going down with what looked like a collarbone or shoulder injury and in heaps of trouble. The conditions would continue to wane on the players as neither side could find a way to score despite tremendous effort. The Tigers found a patch late in the quarter to slam home three goals in three minutes with Jack Riewoldt, Sam Lloyd and Daniel Rioli all kicking truly to give the Tigers the lead. Dan Hannebery gave the Swans a late answer, deep into stoppage time. To close up the margin. The momentum started shifting Sydneys way, however. There wasn’t enough time to capitalise on that as the siren sounded for half time.

Richmond lead by 2 points.

2mmzb0m.jpg

Dion Prestia
Big loss for the Tigers as the star recruit will miss weeks

Q3

Sydney started the 3rd term with clear intent and that was applied inside a minute as Callum Sinclair kicked truly to give the Swans back the lead. That goal exciting the Swans and giving them the edge over the next five minutes as Lance Franklin and Jarrod McVeigh banged a goal each to give Sydney 3 unanswered and a bit of breathing space. The Tigers would continue to work hard but seemed to have lost the coercion they had in the second term as they struggled to score. Daniel Rioli popping up at the halfway point of the term to get the Tigers their only goal of the quarter. Callum Sinclair would kick another just before the siren to nullify the Richmond goal.

Sydney taking a 16 point lead into the final change.
Q4

Damien Hardwick was seen giving the Tigers players a serve during the break and they looked to have responded in perfect fashion as they were on the front foot from the first bounce. It would take 6 minutes before they could make a proper dent in the Sydney lead after wasting 2 attempts that sailed wide. Daniel Rioli stepping up to get the Tigers back within 10 points. Josh Caddy breaking forward and snapping truly a few minutes later had the margin down to 2 points. Sydney tried to get back into the match but failed to hit the target as they wasted 2 attempts close to the 20-minute mark to get some separation. Richmond would go on the attack from there but missed 4 chances (3 missing everything) to take the lead as they teased the Richmond faithful. Bachar Houli coming to the rescue as we hit stoppage time with a sensational goal to get the Tigers up by 3 points. Callum Sinclair had a chance to be the hero with the last shot on goal but missed everything. Richmond hanging on for the final 5 minutes to pick up their second win of the season.

Tigers win by 3 points.

Congratulations on the win. How does that feel against quality opposition?

“That was a tough game. Those last 7 or 8 minutes were pretty intense in the coaches box. Sydney is a quality side. Even with 2 of their best midfield players out. They made it tough for us. I just said to the players that these wins are so important. To come out on top against a potential top 8 opposition side only helps fuel our cause. Any win we can take away from another good side puts us in good stead. It was a hard and tough game and we’ll take those 4 points with both hands”

Prestia went down at the start of the second quarter. What happened and what impact did that have?

“The reports we’re getting is he’s broken his collarbone. I think that’s about 4 to 6 weeks but we’ll know more come Monday. His loss turned the midfield battle over to Sydney’s favour. I thought we had decent control of that in the first quarter but It changed quickly once he was off the field. Sydney started to look dangerous and we didn’t have that spare quality player to slot in without risking exposure up forward or down back. Hannebery got away from us for most of the game. We took a bit of that away from him in the last quarter but we had to juggle the playing positions a fair bit to find a combination that worked for us.”

Sydney lost two players pretty early in the game and they didn’t come back on, obviously forcing players to stay out for long periods with the lack of rotations. Did you think fatigue was a reason you came back so well in the final term to win?

You would have to say it had an impact on the Swans players. I’m not sure about their fatigue levels, as they still had a fair bit of run left in their legs during the final term. They seemed to rotate the midfield players and left their key position guys out on the park. It was a pretty cold miserable day, so you could get away (to some degree) with playing tired. I think we just worked harder at the contest. We finished +35 in contested possession +12 in contested marking, finished up with more scoring shots, although our accuracy was below standard.
Defensively we were good again. Kept their scoring efficiency to 33% despite giving away +13 inside 50’s. Our midfield control is still lacking, but we’re making some ground each time we go out. We just have to keep working hard and the results will come, much like today.

Cheers.

Corey Ellis has made a superb return to footy after an injury-interrupted start to the season.
Coming back from a groin strain which he suffered just a week after getting over an Achilles injury, Corey Ellis picked up 30 disposals and kicked 2 goals in his first run for the Tigers VFL side.

With Dion Prestia sidelined for 5 weeks, There's a great opportunity for Ellis to get into the side for the round 6 clash against the Gold Coast Suns.
With a bye this week for the Tigers, Ellis will get another run in the VFL and another performance like this one will have the selectors talking about him.

Brandon Ellis, Anthony Miles and Jacob Townsend were also impressive in the clash and could play a role in the seniors, giving Corey Ellis some competition.
