cowardly is having no perspective or the balls to reconise where we are at. realities come to the fore and we are on the right path. now whether that means finals this year or not we will find out. every club wants to make the 8 not just us and there is 18 teams to fit into 8 spots.

lol the aim was finals in 2012. thats all it was an aim or ahope that they can build the list enough by then. a premiership by 2014 is that likely nope but its an aim.

there were 5 standout teams last yr i for one will be measuring our improvement only against them.
we are likely to be the second or third least experienced side in the comp with no where near enough players in the mature age brackets to sustain anything.

i couldnt give a toss what they say 99% of everything they say is spin designed to get people to take out membership and buil;d a liitle hope.

common sense when you weigh up everything says finals while they may be possible if everything falls our way are unlikely.

with all things being equal a finish around where we finished last yr is most likely.
thats the reality and the state of the list.

And good on you for that opinion, but i thought it would take more balls to call it straight and say we're gonna miss finals than puff the chest out pre season and run with the rest of the pack ay nobullsheep.

I don't buy into this result based assessment of coaches and based upon our past form I'd suggest there might be others who also fall the same way.
As a coach within the AFL it would be piss easy to sell your soul, as so to speak, and recruit mature aged players solely to make finals, which we've seen in the past.
The real value of a coach I think is to see continual improvement in the players whom they coach.
For mine there are 3 players who were not beyond their prime, who have been at a nice standard and have been our on best 22 both seasons and have continued to improve both seasons. Being Lids, Martin ( admittedly was a first year player ) and Cotchin.
The jury for me is out on whether Rance, Nahas, Houli and Vickery, who had breakout years this season, can continue to improve in 2013.
2010, I thought Astbury showed the signs of being a 10 year player, and despite injury he appeared to have gone backwards in 2011.

Yeah, I'm prepared for the let down! It's easier to pick out the players who don't lift when you have expectations.

I think we have come from a lot further behind the teams you have mentioned and Hardwick has not had the benefit of uncompromised drafts which cannot be underestimated. He and Benny Gale have turned the club around in many ways. His job is only partially done. He would be the first to admit that.

I do think all he has to do is show a constant improvement in key areas (many that have been mentioned) as what is the alternative? Do we sack him and start from the beginning AGAIN? Who would replace him? Another rookie coach? Those hanging out for Malthouse can forget it.

Don't get me wrong, I actually think Hardwick so far has done a pretty good job and he deserves to be signed up for another season. That said, the first 2 seasons have been a honeymoon given that even the most impatient Tiger supporters have been prepared to take a deep breath and cop a couple of below average seasons.

Expectations must begin to rise otherwise not only will we stagnate, we'll go backwards and teams like Brisbane, Port and GC will go flying past us.

I can cop not making the 8 if we:
- eliminate 12+ goal floggings from top 4 teams
- dish them out to bottom 4 teams
- cop more injuries than last year to the wrong players
- see serious improvement in at least a few of our more speculative draft picks (similar to what we saw with Grimes - guys like Ellis and Conca should be a given)

With the exception of injuries, the rest are in our control and if we achieve those and avoid injury, we give ourselves every chance to crack the 8 anyway. My opinion only. Hardwick will be under more pressure this year and massive pressure next year if we miss the 8 this year without any injury catastrophe. It will be interesting to see how he handles it.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, i dont think we will make finals this year. The experience and age of the list will dictate this. There are still gaps on the list, and our overall game development is still being taught.
So even though wins and losses are externally the only score that matters, internally, theres a heap of boxes that have been ticked off, and theres a heap to be ticked off.
Do i personally think we should extend his contract, yes we should. We wont see some of the real fruit of his labour until next year. I'd go a two year extension with clauses, and give him the opportunity to continue to address list needs and improve player development. 2013 is the critical year in my eyes, 2012 not so much.

I have to agree with this. Last year I wanted Dimma to get a one year extension, so that we aren't tempted to pull the trigger too early, but also so we don't tie ourselves into a longer term contract. I still think this is the best way forward for the club.

So much looks to be going in the right direction both on and off the field, pulling the pin this year either the by the club or Dimma himself would be premature.

Interesting array of responses..for me? Its not to much based on black and white figures in terms of wins, although those figures will take care of themselves if my pass mark is attained. i.e. consistent performances of a stretch of games, that has us coming away from the game talking about the quality of the footy the tiges were putting on show. There will be games where they take a sicky and put in a shitful display, but i dont want to see floggings and then Newmo coming out and suggesting the players let the supporters down etc etc etc as we have become accustomed to.
The difference to the past is, that we wont be coming away from games talking about how shitful the quality was after a win.
If they find another couple of players from the current influx of newbies , Dimma will have enough quality ball handlers to be able to cover the non quality ball handlers currently in the team. i.e. the non quality ball handlers should only be used in link up play, as an emergency. We need to string plays together with players who know how what to do and more importantly how to do it, with one look and off one step. And not taking a month of Sundays to work out who to get it to and how on earth to get it to them, aka DJ.

Source? Or just banter? I would be very disappointed if that happened. I'm hoping for but not realistically expecting Richmond to make the finals this year. But I think even the more pessimistic supporters see a bright future at this club.

Hardwick has done a lot in building this club up from scratch. In interviews, he's honest and optimistic. I'm sure as much as anyone he's confident in where this club is going and it would be remiss to walk out of it. I personally would be upset.

For me he's a pass so far. Just show continued improvement and consistancy, and don't drop the games we should win.

Given two years ago the clubs officially publicly stated aim was to make finals in three of the enxt five years, surely a pass mark has to be finals.

Otherwise, some sort of concession from the CEO that his prediciton has been either derailed or delayed

for about the 1 billionth time, the 75-0-3 is a target, not a promise

this is a stretch goal for us to attempt to achieve, key focus on the word "stretch".

The pass mark is the ongoing improvement of our list and their execution of a successful gameplan on field. If this happens, all going well we should be in a position to be fighting to get into the finals, but finals is far from a lock (IMO we will need EVERYTHING to go our way to make the eight).

To be successful you set your goals high, but achievable and you expect to achieve them.

If your handle is an indication of you age you may just remember the "what if close enough was good enough" adds that ran on the telly in the early 80's?

It was a joke mate. Sorry I forgot the stupid little smiley face to indicate that. My bad......

That said I don't think it's unreasonable for supporters to ask the question: "Why?" and let them answer it if we don't achieve the publicly stated aims. We haven't even missed the finals yet so what's all the bloody fuss about anyway. For the record, I think Hardwick will stay with or without finals and to this point has done a pretty good job.
