Free Agency Harley Bennell [joins Melbourne as a delisted free agent]

If he has a great year in the WAFL or even a great half year, he will get picked up again.
This, if he gets picked up again, it’ll be through the mid season draft following good WAFL form

I think he's too talented to risk getting to the mid season draft.
IMO if he's not taken in any of the end of year drafts then he will get an invite to train with a club and be put on a rookie list.
I believe that he has more talent than Walters and everyone has seen the year that Walters has had.
If Andrew Russell believes he can get his calf issues right then I would love to see him at Carlton.
He has shown dedication to get back from his injury this year and has stated already that he is determined to show that he deserves another chance.
Any club offering him a rookie contract has absolutely nothing to lose.

I’d absolutely offer him a rookie contract but I can see how his off field antics combined with his failing body would scare most clubs off

Michael Barlow was on SEN earlier this week and suggested he and Hawthorn have mutual interest.

If the stories of his new found direction are true and you think you can get his body right, it’s a no brainer to get him across and give him a chance.

Interesting. I had heard we had some interest in him. Seems like a Hawthorn type reclamation project.

so is a good move for him to:
1) ask to be delisted,
2) nominate for the draft,
3) either be picked in the draft or rookie draft, & if not
4) play 1/2 a year in the WAFL, with a view to be picked up in the mid-season draft, having gotten through 1/2 a season.
As I believe only players who nominated for the previous draft are eligible for the mid-season draft as it currently stands?
Good luck Harley. :thumbsu:

Be good to see him fit and on the field again. Was exciting player for Suns.

I'd have him on our rookie list for sure.

He would be able to be selected mid year because he would've been delisted

Would think his career at the highest level is well and truly done with.

His off-field behaviour is an absolute train-wreck which is only matched by his body, which is shot and clearly not up to the rigours of professional sport.

Bloody talented, but is finished. Would be shocked to learn otherwise.

I’d take him in a heartbeat. Will be cheap and getting in someone who is a bit loose would be refreshing. Plus, unless he’s at the casino, he’d not be out beyond 10pm week nights or 1:30am on weekends. I can see him in on a 1 year rookie deal, his calf coming good, playing super footy for us in the backend of 2020 resulting in us winning 5 more games than we otherwise would have which jumps us up from 16th to 9th. He then walks to a club offering him $300k more than us over a 2 year contract. This will force the AFL to clarify the rule on whether delisted free agents maintain their status in the same manner that the FAs do. So we’ll get nothing and he’ll have personally turned pick 3 into pick 10, which is a shame because there was a generation Adelaide kid that went at 3. Good for Port because they managed to trade up to 3 by using their pick 9. Naturally, our late charge to the edge of finals enthuses Pyke and Burton, so Otten, Douglas, Mackay and Jacobs all get extensions as quality, experienced depth and all play every JLT game and suit up in round 1 as we strive to make the 8 so “anything can happen”.

Dayle Garlett lasted less than 4 months and then he was sacked! No thanks to Bennell! Not even Clarkson could set him straight. :(

He is straight and has been for quite some time.

His ONLY issue as it currently stands as it relates to his footballing future is his body.

Reeks of a SOS pick.
High draft pick riddled by injuries.
Pick him up as a late pick in the draft for two years at $400k pa.
Delist him end of 2021 without playing a game.

Do enjoy a bit of utensil-eyed optimism but have you lot been following this guy for the last FEW YEARS?

His off field s**t is minor compared to the fact that he literately cannot get to AFL level fitness without breaking down.

He’s cooked - has been for a year already but Freo gave him this season as a final Hail Mary.

He’s recently had surgery on his calves which was deemed a success.

He’s also said to be in a good space off the field.
