News Harley Bennell - Ends at Freo in 2019

He has done stuff historically worthy of great sanction. This event was not clever, but it was not one of the things that deserves a big sanction. Personally, I wouldn't have him at the club based on historic matters. I think some clubs (like us) overestimate the chance of success when persevering with problem players and it is waste of cap and list space. But we have taken the risk and I will cheer him on when / if he takes the field.

If he was with a group of 6, it may well have been another person and Bennell being part of the group that left voluntarily. You’d need to have been there to know for sure, so much uncertainty. I like how the 2 west coast news papers that had the story, it was by a “staff reporter”. Obviously nobody wanted to put their name to it.

Not sure that nothing happened, his partner took out a temporary restraining order against him and they must have sorted it out later. He also hit a tree in his car and was charged with being 3 times the limit. They are young men and make mistakes, lets not see another Shane Yarran here. The media have a lot to answer for.

He got a move on notice and was back with his partner about 24 hours later, so based on the information we have it surely cannot be that serious. After the crash he was given an internal suspension by the club, so surely if the club felt he had done something serious only months after his first suspension they would not hesitate to suspend him again, and yet they did not.

I'm not sure why you freo fans feel so upset by the media simply reporting on what happened, they did the same to Ryan and now PerthNow have published an article claiming that the latest Bennell incident isn't really that big of a deal. This is WA remember, journalists don't really have much to do with their time except make stories sound worse than they actually are and provide us with rolling coverage of Ben Cousins.

He got home near midnight from playing a game that day and was crashing his car with a skinful before the sun came up, with a new child.

Ryan needed lots of support, rallying around him dealing with some stuff..

Do you really think that sums up how the media responded? And would you compare this to Bennell's incident? Does he need support too?

Absolutely, every single press conference with Eagle's staff after had that line of questioning shut down and they didn't follow it up.

That isn't a fault of the journalists though, West Coast player public relations manager Chris has the power to never again make their players available for particular people to interview, never being able to ask a question of a West Coast employee. It would absolutely tank your career in Perth as a sports journalist.

They have to play ball.

No further questions.

I'm looking back at some of the articles that were published when it happened and i'm not seeing the softness you are claiming, but that's okay. I'm flattered you think not being able to interview particular eagles player would "tank your career" if you were a sports journalist, but I feel as though you're not giving your own club enough credit. These kids are athletes remember, not politicians. It's pretty rare to see a journo grill an athlete in any sport, let alone expect them to cop it and respond well to it. Grill Nisbett all you want though.

Back to Bennell, do you think he needs support? Would he and the club be willing to publicly acknowledge the problem? If your club wants to keep dancing around the fact that Bennell probably has an addiction, then every time he slips up journos are going to treat it like a story. That's just the way modern media operates, they're after blood.

Pretty nothing incident really. Whether or not someone is "too drunk" is really just based on the judgement of some meathead bouncer with 2 weeks training. And they're usually much stricter on their definition of "too drunk" around NYE where cops are waiting to pounce on pubs to make some revenue.

This is the pub were a bouncer pushed a patron out of a window killing him, enough said really.

Once again you have no idea:

The prosecution case as outlined in the statement of material facts is as follows. It is alleged that at about 8.45 pm on Sunday, 8 May 2011, the accused was at the Ocean Beach Hotel located on Eric Street in Cottesloe, socialising with a group of associates. The deceased was also at the hotel socialising. Both the accused and the deceased were on the second storey of the hotel where a band was playing. After returning from the bathroom the deceased attended a table occupied by two female patrons and began conversing with them.

12
Upon seeing this, the accused walked from the opposite side of the bar to the deceased and the two females. It is alleged that for no apparent reason the accused took hold of the deceased from behind and forcibly threw him at a plate glass window which was approximately one metre away. The window smashed upon impact and the deceased fell through, falling at least seven metres to the pavement below. After throwing the deceased through the window the accused is alleged to have assaulted another patron by punching him to the face with a clenched fist and to have then left the hotel.

13
As a result of the fall the deceased sustained severe injuries and was conveyed to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in a critical condition, where he later died.

Wtf pushed thrown, semantics. A bouncer at the same pub that Harley was asked to leave killed a punter by throwing or pushing him out the window. Do you even know what youre on about, talk about having no idea.

It wasn't a bouncer according to that, it was another patron.

Thought he has basically been in full training this preseason. God forbid he celebrate NYE. After this week, it’s about 8 months (9 hopefully) of hard work before their next decent break. A little bit of insta-stalking will reveal that many of our 2019 hopefuls don’t mind a frothier or two (or other). Let’s delist them all (jokes).

Harley will attract extra attention wherever he goes, but it’s not a crime to get drunk. Seems like a typical media beat up. Any opportunity to drag Freo through the mud. Pretty sure that Flyin Ryan bloke from down the road is more trouble than Harley, but he’s a premiership hero so it’s ok.

But seriously, how does something like this even make the news? Hundreds of people would get asked to leave pubs and clubs each week. Why would the news even bother reporting it. They barely mentioned a drunken car crash incident - thought that might be more news worthy - LOLZ

This is a newspaper that can fit the whole worlds news on one page and still have room for 2 decent sized adds

It's a glorified community newspaper with a better sports section
