Of course not - maybe the Hawks just felt that at that stage they could walk on water with their player development and that their culture and structures could nurture his undoubted talent. However if a man has these sort of character flaws no club is going to be able to help him.

Haha... “walk on water”

Or you could also suggest that they seen a kid with serious talent & thought they could help him as a footballer & as a human to get him on the right path for a quality life rather than end up where he is today.
The kid left. Hawthorn didn’t kick him out.
Yea the Hawks failed to turn him around but you can’t help someone who won’t help themselves

I reckon he’d be perfect for Hawthorn. Would only take pick 100+ strong club culture, a recent history of some great indigenous players and Clarkson would be the best coach for him. With Cyril retired and Burgoyne in the twilight, a fit Bennell is like a hybrid of the two. Hawthorn also have a great record of getting players to overcome injuries.

Garlett

Clubs aren’t welfare places, why would Bennell suddenly pull his finger out now because Hawthorn?

Deledio begs to differ

He’s clearly not though - hence Bell has identified him as someone he wants out.

I doubt it will be as sinister as some are suggesting though - drug addiction/legal issues - it’ll be down to the guy never being able to maintain a standard of professionalism and commitment required to make the most of his talents in the AFL.

3 years worth of CALF injuries? (which he brought with him from GC) - it’s basically unheard of. I think it’s down to his actual commitment to put in the work and get out there.

Just watched highlights of this guy against the cats when he kicked 6. Seriously what a HUGE waste of talent. This guy could be a Brownlow medalist. How does it not sink into someone’s head that you’re a star of the game and to just work hard and be the best you can? Some players just take the opportunity for granted. Someone like a Michael Gibbons would be livid at this guy. Crazy...

I would take him in a heartbeat, he is an absolute ******* superstar.

Deledio begs to differ

Deledios troubles are different, deledio was pushing 30 after nearly 250 physical games of being tagged. Due to the tigers basically losing everytime he didn't play and him being appointed VC he played when it was not quite right, others would've been given a few weeks to get it right but tigers didn't have the luxury. Despite battling through it lids would eventually get it settled and finish strongly with All Aus ect. Unfortunately as he tried to play on it not quite right once more it went ping which was the major one. He's struggled to get back since this one plus did a hammy & groin but has been quality the times he has played. Harley's has just been strains and niggles with no major tear and moves around freely. I'm fully aware that this can happen just look at Cowan,Gumbleton, Browne and Freeman to name a few but it's quite apparent it's more than his calf going on. I really hope this is bell trying to kick him into gear and let him know there's a new sherriff in town and he's held onto for next year.

I honestly wouldn't take him even if Freo offered to pay the entirety of his remaining contract. He hasn't played any serious football in basically 3 years now. He has persistent injury troubles. He is a ticking time bomb off-field. No work ethic and would bring a negative energy to whatever playing group he's apart of. Does he even want to be an AFL player? I'm surprised Freo have even kept him this long.

Prodigious talent that we'll never get to see the best of again. What a waste.

The moment he attended his club reserves affiliate game under the influence and had to be escorted from the ground by a club official was the moment his career was over.

The rest is just process and time and oversights in club management.
Really? You'd think more than 1 guy on an internet forum would be talking about it then hey.
