Even if its only for 2/3 years whilst you are still rebuilding and then he leaves anyway?

It looks to me from the outside, he is serving a shit sandwich to WC and they have to eat it. I would think different if he committed long term and you could then front load the shit out of it whilst as you say, you can.
What sandwich are we eating if we let him leave? Feels like a shit sandwich but rather from Harley it will be from Geelong or Essendon

Yeah good point, damned if you do, damned if you dont.

That said, could you turn it into a win/win. Probably not based off last years trade exploits.

I think alot of it comes down to our recruitment team ensuring someone else comes in before Harley was to leave. Id like a 3 year deal so we are lined up with a enormous Chad Warner bid. If we can get Harleys first year front loaded we can achieve that easily

After that id also like to think we can have that huge Reid salary in the open that someone else will want to grab so when he does leave a experienced body can head back, much like the Judd/Josh Kennedy situation

There is also some risk for the player signing short term. The kid can play but his next contract will be paid on potential. He won't win our B&F this year, he's not near the AA side and if he was 25 years old or was pick 10 instead of pick 1 there wouldn't be anywhere near the media focus. Fast forward two years if he's at the level he is now, interest will cool. Every club will still want him, but not necessarily as their highest paid player. Right now he's already bloody good, but if you are doing a captain's pick of two all stars teams of 23 is his name getting called out? No.

Chris Judd's first 3 seasons were 3rd, 2nd, 1st in the B&F and in the third season he made the AA side and won the Brownlow with 30 votes. He followed that up with 2nd and 1st in the B&F, a Norm Smith medal, another AA selection, flag and an AFLPA MVP award. Pretty handy CV over a 5 year period. That's why the main board was flooded with Chris Judd GOAT threads and Carlton paid him squillions. He was that good after 20 or 30 games.

Obviously you can't hold every player to Chris Judd standard, but unless you are Jarrad Waite there is a time limit on how long you can be paid on potential. If Harley Reid is a top 5 mid in the comp and out of contract he will be laughing all the way to the bank. If you bet on yourself short term that does come with some pressure.

Thats exactly why the contract his manager has put foward to the eagles is brilliant
He just about covers every possible scenario for Harley

Get the massive dollars and if he develops into the player that people believe he has the option to move and get similar money back home and a chance to win a flag in a team competing and if not or a major injury still has the fall back of the 9 year extension on massive $$$

Except if we still stink in two years and he hasn't developed if he wants out he won't be getting $2m a year.

Almost perfect, not quite. If the AFL was professional he would be able to sign a long term deal then be eligible to be traded say 1-3 years in (depending on overall length) and the club he was going to would have to honour the terms.

I believe from whats been reported its a player option and not a club option
If this is correct thats a massive commitment even more of a concern than the $$ imo

At the money being reported (which is probably miles off as usual) I wouldn't do the deal, but I'm not the list manager. Our list management team would probably offer Finn O'Sullivan $1.5m a year thinking it was Finn Callaghan.

Short term overs, a get out clause and long term overs (at least in today's money) is too much IMO. Contracts should be 3 years for first round picks and a max of 5 years after that, for everyone.

Melbourne had to pay 10% of Angus Brayshaw's salary inside the salary cap in 2024, then 25% this year, 50% in 2026 and 100% in 2027 and 2028. For a player that will play 0 games. These long term deals are a disaster waiting to happen.

WC would be fine financially if they have to pay millions of dollars for nothing but a $2m cap hit for a season or seasons would be crippling.

If wce didn't agree to terms and he did get traded, how much do you think his contract will be?

No club is paying that.
It’s been said for a long time by Ralphy he will get 10 years $20m.

Cal who is by far the most accurate has said Hawks would be at $1.8m and are obsessed so likely go more if they can get it over the line.

It’s crazy money and everyone is paying on potential. Someone will take the risk. The team that is giving up 3 first and that money probably the greater risk

Cap space can always be moved around. Look at the top teams this year who have money to chase the stars. Lions won a flags and possibly bring in 2 x band 1 players.

There is also no reports of that money is the ceiling if he hits bonues for AA, Flag, BnF, Top 10 Brownlow ect.

If they removed the player option it becomes more of a doable deal. Front end it as they have to pay 95% anyway and if he wants out they can demand what they want for it to happen.

The salary cap goes up 37% over this period.
Yes up 37% from 2023 to 2027. Where the average player salary is estimated to be $519k. Who knows after that. What's the figure reported that he wants? 24 million over 11 years. 2.181 million a year, four times the average player. Would want to be the perfect player for that. Best on and off the field, great leadership, not injury prone. Good luck to any club that takes him.

The outrage and concern is so admirable.

I seriously just thought you were a pack of self-interested flogs campaigning for Harley to leave WCE as soon as humanly possible for the last 2 and half years but it turns out it was actually all driven by concerns about West Coast's salary cap and the long term viability of signing a promising young player on a massive contract, similar to which had been openly speculated as likely from the minute he was drafted.

I had you all wrong.❤️

You also get his rookie contract for next year.

The cap could also explode after 2027?

There is so much that would be written into these contracts that we wouldn’t know yet. KPIs.

If you’re paying the $2m+ for a Vic side and giving up 3 x 1st round picks you get double the risk.

West Coast can’t afford to stuff this up.
They will relent and give Harley the contract he wants, even if it’s blatantly obvious he’s just on loan for a couple more years. They really have no other option with the list the way it is.

He was on loan with his rookie contract as well? The loan that potentially keeps getting extended…..

I think he wants to cash in then come home. The Eagles probably know this too, that’s why the offer has been sitting with them for a month.

But Harley staying for two more years will make the rusted on happy and give them hope that he’ll stay for longer.

Wasn't he going to request a trade this year, or next? And if it's Geelong or Hawthorn we suck it up and accept their late picks?

He can make money anywhere. Seems odd to stay here for 5 years then go.
