Would have to be a three way trade then because he's not getting success at WC.I may be in the minority, but I think Reid is exactly what we need. We'll be lucky to draft anyone with his talent. With Koby Bewick coming in a couple of years, we'd have the perfect balance of class and aggression. Reid, Bewick, Durham, Caldwell, Martin, Duursma on the wing. That's a good mix if you ask me.
And here comes the opinion that will get me banned from the board.
I don't care who we have to trade to make that happen, even if it is Merrett. WHAT?!
Yes I said what I said.
Merrett at some point deserves team success. His career at Essendon is looking more like Nathan Jones than anything else. It's a travesty that he is on the end of 90-point losses while spuds are challenging for flags.
It's bittersweet, but we have to think long term if we're going to rebuild. We need to continue building through the draft, but we also cannot afford to bypass talent like Reid if he is interested. This is the only solution that allows us to do both.
That way, we have the ability to retain first round selections to keep building around players like Roberts, Kako, Caddy etc before Tassie come.
And before anyone says "but we will be so bad without him for x amount of years", we're completely uncompetitive 12 years into his career.

I keep changing my mind on whether we should take Reid. But in any case, I don’t think we’ll need to trade Merrett to get a trade done. 4, 6 and our compo for Draper should easily be enough. If we happened to get band 1 for Draper, I expect we’d ask for the eagles first rounder tied to the hawks to come back our way.I may be in the minority, but I think Reid is exactly what we need. Yes, that’s exactly why we have a chance to get him. I think there’s a decent chance WC just refuse to deal with Geelong. The hawks will probably need to find a way to get better draft capital through other trades. But it won’t be the same as what we have to offer.I'm sure WC would agree with you with that trade. But Hawks and Geelong are likely to offer trades nothing remotely that good.
No not West Coast. Somewhere else in a three-way tradeI agree that Merrett deserves team success, but shipping him to West Coast is doing the exact opposite of that lmao.
The way things are playing out I'm becoming very sure he's ending up at us.
Whispers been around since he first moved to WA he wanted to come to us. Vozzo's comment of "quite the opposite" when asked if Harley had informed Essendon he didn't want to go there. Harley holding West Coast over a barrel with a ridiculous offer seems like a PR attempt to me basically so they can say "we tried to get him to stay!".
Isn’t Ralph saying he isn’t coming to us?

100%Yeah, the only way at this point we're getting Reid is if he decides to stay for another 2-3 more years then looks to move home, and we've gotten our act together in that time. If he looks to move now or in the next 12 months, based on the number of options he'll have, we're not in the hunt. Nor should we expect to be.
Maybe I misunderstood the context, but doesn’t he literally say “Dons well back in the pecking order if WC baulks”?He's saying Reid will book it for more money and contract length if the Eagles don't pony up
I don't disagree that he'd be good to have in the team, we've been missing that X factor for a while. However, considering we're still bottoming out is it the right timing for us? What we give up to get him might push the rebuild back a bit as we still need to turn over the list and bring more young players in. Not to mention the long term injuries.Put it this way. If he was in this year's draft, I'm offering West Coast both of our firsts to trade up to him because we need a versatile mid capable of playing forward.
No brainer if he chooses us. People forget the form he showed last year and he'll be better with a full preseason.
