For people who saw the game today, how did Tom Harley play? I saw someone suggest in another thread that he should go back to the VFL for a spell. I am kinda against this - did he really play that badly?

Hes our captain , weather we like it or not. so he will be given every chance to improve in the seniors. Just carnt see Bomber dropping him

I'm with you I think. I do admire him but Egan has to be the main CHB now. Just showed out so badly when Egan went off and he went on Reiwolt.

He is the most impotant player in out team. Our captian, leader and great team player. Great to have him back.

He can hardly be expected to be match fit after all the time he has off. He certainly didn't play a great game and Josh Hunt must have been spewing to have been dropped after that performance.

But Harley will get better as he plays more that is for sure. Chapman didn't play a great game either for that matter.

Put his body on the line going for the pill in the last quarter. Will be better for the outing. He's the captain, key part of the backline, bleeds for the jumper. If he's fit, he plays.

I would not go as far as he is our most important players. Leadership wise, maybe but there are many before him

Egan is a hell of a lot in front of him now... The guy is amazing.

Its ridiculous that harley gets a game just because he is captain. Ther are blokes playing much better footy than harley that are being forced to play in the seconds. He needs to find form in the VFL and i think we will struggle to beat adelaide with harley in the team. I feel sorry for the bloke been destroyed by injuries and at his best with scarlett made up one of the best backlines in the comp at the time, but the way the game is played these day harley just cant keep up with the hard running style of footy. I would love to see him recapture some of his 2004 form but cant see it happening. Harley needs to be droped and give the players that deserve the oppertunity a go.

agree with most of what you said but the fact is Bomber will not drop his captain until he really has to. Harley will come good (I hope) but it will have to come while playing seniors.

I was at the game and he looked like he had lost a step and was not as agile as he use to be. Looked lost a few times too and didn't play much of the game. However given that it was his first game back, I'll cut him some slack and give him a few more weeks to prove himself.

might be awhile, tredrea hasn't even found form yet and he has been back for a few weeks now. surely, you can't drop the skipper.

he needs a few more games...after the break if he is still performing like he did tonight he will be cut. he deserves the chance to get into form

to be honest though, Josh Hunt is ahead of him but Josh Hunt isnt captain

Saints tried hard all night to go to whomever Harley was on, which is not a good thing

Thought it was a big ask for his first game in ones to be asked to double-team Riewoldt when Egan had a well-deserved rest. Riewoldt can make most players look a bit off. I would have preferred to see Tom go back to Gehrig as he's a good strength match-up, and Scarlett go on to Riewoldt. Tom will get better and when things get a lot harder than they are at the moment, as more teams start to plan better to bring us undone (see the saints clogging us up forward of centre in the corridor before 1/2 time), he will be very important. Interesting contest between Riewoldt and Egan - you don't often see CHF/B opponents have it something like 45 times between them (with Matt shading the saint supremo).
At the end of it, saints got too little out of their midfield, Ball and Hayes but particularly Del Santo. And that is why there is no other candidate for the day's 3 votes than Lingy, who stopped DS in his tracks and hurt them badly going the other way (incl. 3 goals).

I think thats what we all need to do, it was his first game in 9 weeks for christ sake, he will come good, mark my words, three weeks we will be saying how good he is. Just give him some time.

Impotant is actually spelt impotent... Though I can't work out why you think it is great to have him back if this is how you regard him!

On a serious note, Harley is a dinosaur and was exposed thus by Riewoldt today. Your post indicates that you did not listen to or watch the game today.

Could and probably should have came back through the 2's. Didn't get into the game and got killed by Riewoldt.

The problem that i have with harley being brought back into the team is that it was a t the expence of someone in much better form which really annoys me.

I agree that in retrospect Harley should not have been made captain. He has been a great servant of our club but in recent years has been wrecked with injury. Did we learn nothing from Steven King? Having said that, the decision at the time was understandable. Is it fair to say, (particularly at the end of last season) that we lacked leaders at the club? Mooney - too undisciplined, Ling was in poor form, Scarlett is not captaincy material, nor is Milburn. The only person in my mind for the job was Paul Chapman, one of our best players. But I think only he and Harley were worthy of the captaincy, they chose Harley on experience.

As to Harley's value to the team, we will find out throughout the course of the season. Against some teams we may not need to play three tall defenders like against St Kilda, which would leave me wondering where to play Harley. But its his first game back from injury, he wasnt too bad and we won by ten goals. Lets cut him some slack and enjoy the great form we're in.

I thought Chapman played a pretty good game for his first week back from injury. Got a lot of the ball and I would say was in the top 10 players on the ground.
