That's right. In the article about Harley on the AFL website a couple of days ago, Tom was saying that he believed his role was now changing, away from the key position back 2, and more to a support role for Scarlett and Egan.
If this is the case, and we look at the Adelaide game, then how could you say that he is not worthy of being in the 22 or close to it.
If he is not a KP backman, then he plays on the third best forward, which in the Adelaide game was Riccuito. Why then is he expected to compete against the guys you think he should be able to, e.g. Riewoldt?
If Harley's role has changed, we could equally bag out Hunt if he were put on Riewoldt and failed to outpoint him.
Perhaps you need to re-evaluate where you think Harley is supposed to play, and maybe you would see him in a different light?

What a load of absolute rubbish. Tell me why you would have a bloke taking a 3rd forward(nearly always small) who is tall, slow, average disposal, not a great tank to cover the ground etc, etc when you can have a smaller player who can set up play through the midfield and run / hit targets. Harley would typically take a Reiwoldt type and always has, the fact is he can't handle it anymore.

What is it with this re-creating stuff? There are guys fitter, stronger, quicker, better kicks/handballers than Harley?? He is a key position defender, nothing else. He would suck as a forward also, would struggle kicking from on 50m. This re-creating is about fitting a bloke into the side who is there because he has to be (Captain), nothing else. Any other player in his current state would not get a game, plain and simple.

Just building some very nice form is the skipper.

But he's only there because he's the captain, isn't he? :D

Got it in one...

Getting more wrong by the post marty. It's not to late to admit you are wrong. You're only going to look sillier from here on in...

Has improved every game, very solid today.
His 3/4 time huddle with the players shows what sort of a leader he is and it was obvious that the players have high regard for him.
Bye-bye D. Johnson and Hunt.

Yep, keep denying it martyk.
This board has respect for those who can admit they were wrong. So?

I have only ever delivered the facts. I still don't think he deserves a position over other players who are performing well in the 2nds, and have done consistantly. I have also said that I hope he improves, which he is. It's when we are under the pump when we'll see how he's really going. He is a member of possibly the best defense in the league, not to mention the other aspects of the team. Life is good for any player at this point.

I actually heard Mark Thompson on K-Rock this arvo say "Tom actually begged us to play him, and he started off terribly and has improved since." This is basically what I've said!! Why did he get a game from the START when there were obviously better/fitter/in-form players to choose from?? BECAUSE HE'S CAPTAIN. What part about this am I wrong about? That was my stance from the start.

What exaclty am I denying, how am I wrong?

Asked and answered.

What exaclty is wrong about that statement? If your going to tell me I'm wrong, then offer some substance... I think Harley has played one decent game and 2 bad games?? So what? Why exaclty are you all so correct? I could name 4+ players from the 2s who could come in and play one good game out of 3 in a winning side easy...

I don't need to offer anything marty. If you think there's someone in the twos that deserves a spot ahead of Harley at the moment, I'd say you are in the very small minority (possibly a minority of 1).

OK, so in other words so have nothing to offer. All you have is the reliance on others on here to back you up.. Pathetic. Maybe one of your buddies on here can help you out then??? Come on??

How about this? Harley is in the team and will stay in the team barring injury. That in itself proves that he is deserving of a spot above all others in the VFL.

Oh, wait. He's there because he's the captain. That's right. Keep peddling that one marty.

OK. Harley has been terrific last few weeks. He reads the play well in the backline and has the ability to take constested marks back there. He is what caps off our great backline. I am aware others are playing well in the twos. Just who do you think could play Harley's role better than Harley? Come on??

Correct!! Good to see your finally seeing things rationally. The bloke was totally under-done when he came into the team, no other player if not captain would have had that oppurtunity.

By the way, that still doesn't answer why I'm wrong earlier?? Given up already??

I agree with you Marty nobody except the captain or the select few would have had the oppotunity to get his form back in the seniors and I agree it is totally wrong. But having said that I think its too late now and he has his place and does seem to be hitting some form.
Think its too late to worry about what should or shouldnt have been guys

Whats done is done, yes. It's just that some people on here tend to be vindictive towards me because I've kept them honest many times. Amusing to say the least.

I only ever stated what you have in your post, which will be supported by any rational thinking person who has followed the game for a decent period.

Hopefully Harley performs later in the season when it counts, and against good sides. He has every oppurtunity, if he can't he shouldn't be captain in '08. Too many others lining up -- Ablett, Chapman.

Look at the highlighted words... 'facts' then 'think (i.e personal opinion).
You can state the facts which you have done... but it is your opinion that we are disagreeing with.
Facts: yes, he probably came in before he was fully ready, and perhaps he came in earlier than others would have because he is captain, but I would suggest that pretty much every other club in the league would choose their captain at 90% before a less-experienced, 'playing well in the twos' kind of player. That's partly why someone gets the gig of being captain, because they are central to the leadership and hence the performance of the team. How can you argue this when we haven't lost a game since he has come back? (And yes, I realise it's not just to do with him that we are winning, so don't take my quote out of context like you have a propensity to do).

He's played three games, one poor and two good (not the two poor and one good that you seem to think).
What do you say about Chapman, who hasn't out-performed Harley the past few weeks, and yet was out for less time than Harley was? Is he just back in because he might be the next captain after Harley????

Pointless argument... The very fact that he could come in without scrutiny is because the team is performing so well. If we were losing he would be getting torn to pieces like every other underdone player does in similar circumstances. He is in a win, win position in other words. While he will improve, the fact that he gets the chance to regain form he hasn't had since '04 (yet to be proven anyway), shows how good the team is going.

Thats rubbish to start with, Chapman has outperformed Harley. He played half a game against the saints and got 20+ touches first game back! Don't make me pull the stats out to prove you wrong. Very poor choice of argument!! :o Chapman won the best and fairest last year and has consistantly been in our best 3-4 players for years. Harley has played one full season in the last 5... Getting the idea yet??? Harley's history of late isn't great at all, if half of you bothered to look you'd know too..

A moderator needs to close this thread...

Why, because the topic isn't 100% blowing sunshine up the back sides of a winning team like every other thread? Nothing wrong with seeing both sides of the coin, although many people on here choose not to.
