Nine things we learned
6. Harris Andrews is making a compelling All Australian case
For the third match in succession, Brisbane's vice-captain absolutely dominated from full-back. After a slow start to his season and a hamstring injury that cost him two matches, Andrews has destroyed Adelaide, Fremantle and Hawthorn in three straight weeks with his intercept marking and control of the defensive 50. Against the Hawks he was sublime, finishing with 20 disposals (10 intercepts) and nine marks. The 22-year-old made the 40-man All Australian squad last season despite missing four matches courtesy of an errant Jeremy Cameron elbow. Andrews is one of the best defenders in the competition and if the man with the Go-Go-Gadget-Arms can maintain anything like his current form, should walk into the final 22 in 2019.

We knew this year's ago, but glad to hear a case may be starting to gather some momentum from the footy world.

Captain's call: Your club's next skipper and a left-field choice
Next in line:
It'll be a tight call with Jarrod Berry also in the frame, but Harris Andrews (pictured below) is the man. Already the vice-captain, Andrews is 22 and will be in the prime of his career when Zorko finishes up – and still have a long tenure in front of him. Andrews is known as 'dad' around the club, a nod to his maturity and the respect among his peers.

The 2019 All Australian team
Lion Harris Andrews' ascension to one of the game's elite defenders is complete, being selected at full-back for the first time in the All Australian team. Andrews, 22, is the bedrock of top-four side Brisbane's backline and was the AFL's leading spoiler and ranked equal-sixth for intercept marks.

Three Lions named in All Australian team
Three Brisbane Lions players were named in the 2019 All Australian team, receiving their first blazer at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne earlier this evening. Lachie Neale was named as a rover, Harris Andrews at full back and Charlie Cameron in the forward pocket.

Andrews, at only 22 years of age and in his fifth season at the Lions, has become one of the league’s strongest key defenders and leads the competition in spoils.

“Very excited, honoured, to be regarded in such a high manner in the league,” Andrews said. Raised in Queensland he played his junior football at the Aspley Hornets and only made his first representative team as a 17-year-old. “I missed out on a few teams growing up and tried not to get too disheartened,” he said. “I guess it’s about the importance of not giving up on what you want to achieve.”

The AFL Players’ Association MVP Award nominees for 2019 have been revealed, ahead of the awards on Thursday, August 29.

The nomination for the MVP Award is a two-stage process. The first involves players nominating three teammates for the award, before three nominees from every club are presented to the wider playing group for a vote to decide the winner. Players cannot vote for their own teammates in stage two of the process.

Alongside the Most Courageous, Best Captain and Best First Year award nominees, the league’s players have nominated the three players they believe are their most valuable.

MVP: Lachie Neale, Dayne Zorko, Harris Andrews

22under22 AFL 2019 team: AFLPA announces best 22 and under team for season
Harris Andrews’ whirlwind 2019 season has continued, with the gun Lion named captain of the AFL Players’ Association’s 22under22 team.

Less than 24 hours after being named in the All-Australian side for the first time, Andrews was one of four Brisbane players to be named in the young guns team, along with Alex Witherden, Hugh McCluggage and Eric Hipwood.

It was the third consecutive season that Andrews, as well as Bomber Andrew McGrath and Demon Clayton Oliver had been named in the 22under22 side.

“To be named as captain alongside three Brisbane teammates and quality young players is a huge honour,” Andrews said. “It’s wonderful to be recognised by the fans for my work this season and hopefully I can continue that into the finals series.”
