Hawthorn has selected powerful midfielder Harrison Jones with its first selection in Monday night’s Rookie Draft.

The 183cm on-baller played for the Murray Bushrangers in this year’s TAC Cup competition, where he built a reputation as a capable midfielder who also has the ability to go forward and hit the scoreboard.

A fierce competitor with a strong appetite to win the contested ball inside the stoppage, Jones consistently accumulated large numbers of possessions throughout the season.

Jones also impressed at last month’s Draft Combine where he finished the standing and running vertical jump events fourth and sixth respectively.

That’s 5 players we have picked up in the last 3 Draft periods from the Murray Bushrangers. We must really rate their talent and players character from those neck of the woods. ( Harrison Jones, Harry Morrison, James Cousins, Jacob Koschitzke and Mat Walker )...

Some Country boys may not receive the same level of development support as metro kids on account of having to travel long distances so in theory would have more upside than exposed form suggests. We are looking for inefficiencies in the market for talent and under developed talent is one option. Injured players is clearly another ;)

Jones being both! His vertical jump testing in his draft year showed a certain level of explosiveness, which is hard to exhibit with the back injury he had. I reckon they saw what he could be.

Think I remember reading a JKosi interview that the Bushrangers only train once a week due to distance. Perhaps you're right? The hawks may have identified a development shortfall and therefore a few players falling lower in the draft than they otherwise would have. Sounds a very Hawthorn like tactic.

Its always been AFL heartland even though they gave it to GWS
 
Did very well in the time trial....unexpectedly, at least externally.

The upside of selecting Bushies is there a fair chance they have had significant exposure to senior football.

Jones has a nice attack on the ball and uses both feet to kick. He also likes to involves others in the play with the good use of hands. Mr.Jones has all elements to become a successful afl player it will probably come down to what is between his ears that could determine his playing future.
Gl young man and own your moment
 
Has shown he can play across half back, but think he’ll get his start as a defensive midfielder. Has the tank, has the aggression and moves okay. With a full preseason interesting to see what he can produce.

We don’t actually have a heap of midfield depth so could get a few games. One to watch.

In some of the best country leagues the state has to offer. Ovens & Murray, Goulburn Valley and Murray league.

Isn't this the old Ovens and Murray league? If so it has always been one of the strongest and was highly sought after during the draw for country zones. North Melbourne won the draw and recruits from there made a big contribution to their 1975 and 1977 success.
